Hey Detoxin, South Melbourne are one of the clubs that actively support player development and all players in top team, Eagar included, have a release clause should any fully professional club come calling. Trials included.

Happy he's playing somewhere but it was built up in this thread earlier so thought he had got a move somewhere bigger. That's what I mean. Staying put is the next best thing though

smarter then siggy, doesn't get caught out and can help the team with his passing ability, not cause us problems knocking a shady pass into Reira to get clattered... id take eags

You must base that on all the HAL and internationals that Eagar has played over Sigmund right?

i recently tapped up a mate of mine who has a keen footballing eye and had seen souths play a few times this year.

he assured me that eagar is well above other state league defenders and that his reading of the game and distribution made him stand out

Eagars team top of the league again this year in VIC. How far away is an A-League trial/contract? The bloke is a trophy magnet

He definitely is a trophy magnet - 3 consecutive state leagues (Queensland and 2 in Victoria). Always looked one of the better players in the ASB  premiership.

However I've watched quite a few VPL games (highlights on You Tube) and have been seriously underwhelmed by the standard of the VPL and it seems to be quite a few steps below the A League (and maybe even the ASB Premiership ?)

Am I wrong in asking why Hudson wont look at Eagar? He is playing in a higher league then the ASB prem would you agree? I would really like to see him in the AW's but no way is he to take a penalty.

Not sure where I heard this from, but I did hear that ASB premiership was higher than Aussie state leagues. I have no idea if this is true though. Never seen a game of aussie state league.

Not true; imo. More competition in both Vic state league and NSW state league.

Well if you look at how consistently competitive ACFC is at the club world cup as well as how NZ age group teams which often have a number of asb players in them compare to their Australian counterparts recently then its hard to really back up that statement. Players from the ASBP seem to be able to make the step to A-League a little easier than state league players do.

ACFC start 8 imports. How is this a valid position?

The discussion is which competition is stronger not how many imports they have. The Phoenix start 7 imports if you count non New Zealand eligible players as imports..

I agree but you cannot use ACFC as a measure of how strong the ASBP is relative to Australian state leagues when ACFC are dramatically skewed away from other clubs (who represent more the norm of the comp) because they played 7 imports last night (8 on Sunday)

If you wanted to look at the standard of the ASBP as a relative guide, you would look at contests involving Waitakere vs TW or Canty or TW vs Canty because those 3 teams are likely to be the other 3 sides in the top 4 with perhaps WaiBOP providing a potentially competitive outfit this year.

Those games provide more of a true measure of the competition as a whole and relative to that, if ACFC are starting 7/8 imports, there are not many Kiwis going to come from that side and step up (as a quantitive argument)
