Subbed on at 89 mins as HA (last - 12th) win 2-1 at St Mirren (8th). One of 4 very late subs to wind the clock down.

HA 2 points behind Kilmarnock (11th) & 3 pts behind Ross County (10th).

Sadly HA (30 pts, GD -13) basically relegated now. One game left hosting 2nd last
Kilmarnock
(33 pts, GD -31). So HA need to win 18-0 or similar scoreline to stay up!!

Old story I guess, down in the 2nd tier Scottish Championship Stanger may get more playing time.

I remember once Hamilton on last game of season needing a 10-0 win for a chance to get promoted, and did so. Dodgy to the extreme, though other result went against them and turned out it didn't matter.

This week's Flying Kiwis.

"One that couldn’t fit in last week’s edition but all these European seasons are ending now so let’s squeeze it in here: George Stanger getting a run out in Hamilton Academicals’ final game of the Scottish Premiership season.

It’ll be their last Prem game for at least a year because they were basically already relegated by the time they hosted Kilmarnock. If they’d have won by 12 or more goals then they might have gotten into a playoff but what were the chances of that? The Accies have been pretty crap throughout and even in the final five-game relegation round against the teams around them they still lost four out of five matches their their top flight status on the line. Thus a seven-year stint in the Premiership comes to an end.

Stanger didn’t start but he was subbed on in the 52nd minute, getting a decent amount of time out there. 37 touches of the ball. Three aerial challenges won. A key pass. 84% pass success. A blocked shot. A clearance. Zero fouls conceded. Not much else to say other than running through some stats because they were already 2-0 down at that point and there weren’t any more goals. This was Stanger’s fifth appearance of the Scottish Prem campaign. One start and four as a sub. 211 minutes all up. So that’s cool... we’ll see if the drop in divisions means he gets more opportunities."

Should get a game next weekend. The guy that was sent off was a centre back.

If he can't start cracking the starting XI in a bang average side it could make for a pretty long season ahead.

Hamilton just signed RB Luke Matheson on loan from Wolves, hugely rated youngster in England ever since he scored for Rochdale vs. Man U in a 1-1 league cup draw at age 16. Seems like Stanger was playing there as a makeshift beforehand, so yeah a bit naff that he can't crack the squad now

Finally, one "get him to the Nix" I can see actually happening.

Flying Kiwis. Unattached FC it is.

Hamilton Accies FC
@acciesfc

Defender George Stanger, 21, has been released by the club. After representing New Zealand in the Olympics in July he has played 3 times this season, and 9 apps for us all in. He goes with our good wishes.

Here’s an odd one. You don’t normally see fellas being released outside of transfer windows like this... it means you can’t register for a new club until the next one opens so you’re better off getting paid to sit on the bench if it comes to that. And Stanger had been getting a few games with the Accies in the second tier this season. Not a lot but he’d made two starts filling in at right back (before they signed a loanee from England) and was on the bench as recently as last week when they drew 0-0 with Dunfermline.

That suggests that either he’s off backpacking around the world with Winston Reid for the next few months or perhaps he already has something lined up overseas. Don’t wanna mention any names but the A-League window is open right now. Just a thought. Or maybe he told the coach what he thought of him and they just ripped up his contract. We’ll find out soon enough.

Well certainly sounds like it was Stanger who requested for the release from HA, and Nix are in urgent need of a new CB. Bonus I imagine that he'd count as a local. Or is he off to join the Kiwi cluster in Helsingor??

But better pack his sunscreen if he is coming to NSW. 30 degrees today in Sydney.

Prior to the game, New Zealand youth international George Stanger has left the club. The 21-year-old centre-back departs to pursue senior opportunities elsewhere.

He made nine appearances for Hamilton following his 2018 arrival. Taylor says that while he won't stand in anyone's way should they want to leave, he wishes Stanger the best.

"George is now pursuing other opportunities so good luck to him," Taylor said.

"He's a great lad and he's always welcome back to the club to watch games. He's a good, young professional with good qualities."

It is some of a put down to say you are invited back to the club to watch games however

I thought he looked poor for the Olympic team, unwanted at a league beneath the a league and I  hope we can do better at the NIx

Based on the Olympics we should get rid of Clayton Lewis then as he was pants in 3 games, despite coming in match fit, something Stranger wasn't doing.

He's young, will be hardened from playing in Scotland. Is worth a look definately.

Agree that Lewis was undies at the Olympics.  Why he was left on the pitch only a blind coach (starts with H..) could tell you.
But sometimes kids can get nervous and not play to their best in those big tournaments.  Now that Stensness is gone, I think Stanger should be kept in the mix, for All Whites at least.

This week's Flying Kiwis.

Here’s one from the unexpected files. Doing a bit of research for the January Transfer Window and this popped up. Could it be...

https://twitter.com/StirlingUniFC/status/1477298920103587843

Yeah sure enough. George Stanger, fresh from the Olympics in July, was released by Hamilton Academical in October. He’d played a few times for them in the early rounds of their Championship campaign – after they were relegated from the Premiership last season – but mostly as a makeshift emergency right back and once they were able to bring in a loanee to fill that role he quickly disappeared from sight. Then he was released (seemingly not against his will either, understandably). Hadn’t heard much from him since but there’s yer boy indeed...

Turns out he’s been playing there since a couple weeks after he left Hamilton so there you go. This would appear to be his fourth goal for the club already.

At which point we come to the level he now finds himself at... the Lowland Football League which is the fifth tier of Scottish footy.

Quite a drop for a bloke who played a little bit of Premiership earlier in the year. Same division that Steven Old now plays in with East Kilbride, coincidentally, but Oldy’s at one end of his career and Stanger’s at the other. Worth mentioning that Stanger got his start with Stirling Albion so he’s back in familiar territory. We’ll find out down the line whether this is a brief stopover stint in his career or a sign of other priorities taking hold.

Up Next: Turns out Stirling Uni’s next game’s been called off for a water-logged pitch
