Ask Paul Ifill, he said the same thing.

It was him or Greenie, that said that in most teams in the A-League there is 1 player that could possibly play in the EPL. 2-3 that could play in Champ etc etc.

Yet no-one has named anyone.  And I don't think it applies to the youth either.

In the interview Ifill gave to Fox Sports FC recently he said the ability varied between Championship and the Conference. Didn't mention the Premiership.

I reckon if Hernandez got into amazing condition, lost 10kg (maybe more), he wouldn't be the worst player in the premier league.

I agree. Also Culina, Ifill could manage in the EPL.  Off topic though...

Barnet have sent an application for international clearance/work permits.

International clearance can sometimes take a while to come through but hopefully he'll be up and running shortly. He won't need a work permit though as he has a British passport.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how Chris gets on at Underhill.

Mentions him as a winger in that article, although I'm pretty sure he's a central #10 style midfielder, and he seems like that sort of player from the odd game I've seen him play for the All Whites. Can anyone who may have seen/observed him more elaborate on his style, characteristics and position?

Think he's played wide for the AW's most of the time - guess he'll play anywhere to get a game at the moment

An 89th minute sub in their 3-1 home win v Chesterfield.
That's a start i suppose.
Hmmm 7 and a half minutes of added time so nearly 10 minutes on the park.

Yes it's just a start he can still play 8 games until the end of the season:

Meanwhile, fringe All White Chris James has signed for League Two (fourth tier) club Barnet FC in a bid to press his claim for a World Cup place.

James, a 22-year-old attacking midfielder, received his international clearance on Good Friday.  He has been named in Barnet's squad for a match against Chesterfield on Tuesday (NZ Time).

The former Fulham reserve last played for Finnish club Tampere United.

He has 16 All Whites' caps but was not in the squad for the World Cup playoffs with Bahrain.

James has joined Barnet until the end of the season. The club's website reported he had been told by New Zealand football authorities that he needed to be playing for a club to be considered for the Wordl Cup squad.

Barnet manager Ian Hendon told www.barnetfc.com: ''His aim is first to force his way into our team and then get a few games in to earn himself a ticket for South Africa in June.''

He's running out of time to make the world cup squad.. needs to get on the park.

But - if he's training with them.. and fit, how's that different to Mulligan?

Well the positive thing is he training day in day out, hopefully he will get some game time in the last 4 games for barnet as there are now pretty much mathematically safe from relegation and have nothing to lose by playing him. It seems his intention was to be at a club and training everyday which is quite honestly more than what some others All Whites or Potential AW's are doing at the moment from either the A-League or NZFC. Cant knock someone at a professional club in UK no matter what league it is.

really not looking good for him. Needs gametime to make some late head waves. It's not a great season for him and since he left Fulham, it's been tough. Would have been better for him to stay at Fulham and get reserve game time and possible break into the first team considering the league level they are at now.

How could he possibly break into the Fulham first team when he cant make the first team of a Lower table League Two club?

If he plays well, he gets his chance. In Fulham, they had a very good reserve team which he had a number of games beforehand. He was offered an one year extension with Fulham in 2007 which means he is reasonably in good standing with them at an age of 19 and he personally had a cracker 2008 season with Tampere United and had an injury which mean he didn't have a look in from then on.

If he had the same season in the Fulham Reserve team, he would have broke in the first team for an appearance at least.

Part of the problem is he has to wait for the incumbants to fail before getting a look in. But sometimes the manager is not sure whether he should take shot or not even when the players that he has fielded doesn't do the job. It's hard for any new player that has come in after most of the season is gone to get a start even when everything is not going to plan.AllWhitebelievr2010-04-25 19:11:06

Trust you to be negative . . . again.

I did use the word "If" and have said "part of the problem. . ." I had assumed that he may have not up to it with injuries being a problem for fitness.

However, I recalled that a number of Fulham fans at the time, suggested that he was a team player and does his role well and thinks he has a decent future and enough potential to crack into the first team squad nab a few games.

It can be one of those "better the devil you know than the devil you don't know" thinking that you get with selections. Still having him on the bench and not playing in the reserves after so many matches definitely means he is in the big grey area of selection.

I go to fulham about twice a month and the fans I have spoken to barely remember him as a first team prospect.

You say he had a cracker season at Tampere - he played about half their games and was loaned out the next year (and was actually on loan by the end of the season)

He has played a total of 22 professional first team football matches in his career (from 2004 until now).

I am not negative - I just call B__ S___ when I see it.  I watch Fulham all the time and the simple fact is that seeing how his career has progressed I doubt very much the Chris James would have gotten anywhere near the first team at Fulham (ultimately though it may have been better for his career to have stayed).

It also annoys me that at every people continue to look at reserve team matches as evidence of some huge ability.  At premier league club across the country it is a huge step up from the Reserves, and most clubs run their first team and reserve team completely separately.  Most reserve team players still have a job to even get into the 25 or so first team squads before they even step foot on the field

Once again he didn't get on in the weekend in a 1-0 home loss.  Barnet 4 points above demotion to the Conference

A reserve prem league team plays alot tougher opposition than many leagues around the world Dean so if he did well there arguebly he'd do well in a lot of places.

HIs time at Tampere is a weird one, scored a lot of goals for a cm yet got loaned out?? Personality clash / training ehtos?

I don't think talent was ever an issue.

He also won a couple England youth caps so he can't of been that bad and Fulham offered him a deal which suggest two things. 1 his potential and 2 his questionable buisness sense.

El,

There are alot of quality players playing in the reserve leagues. Seasoned professionals recovering from injuries or trying to get back in to notice.

The Arsenal reserve team / youth hasn't exactly feared to badly in the fa cup over the past few years.

And if playing in a reserve squad is such a poor standard then why do young up and comers sign for teams they have no chance of breaking into for the next three - four years?? Why not keep playing regularly in the lower leagues??

I'm not saying it's poor - but it's going way over the top to say that it's better than many leagues around the world.

Only a small percentage of players in those teams ever get to have prolonged professional careers, most sink ito obscurity within a year or two.
