From Flying Kiwis.

Didn’t see any Bill Tuiloma for Charlotte FC though. He’s also got a new British coach in Dean Smith (should mention Eric Ramsay is Welsh), which will hopefully be a boost for Tuiloma after struggling for game-time in the back half of last season under the last gaffer... yet we’ll have to wait to find out whether that’s the case because a left thigh injury kept him out of their season opener, a 1-0 win over New York City FC.

Boyd with the bragging rights over ex AW team mate Tuiloma. Nashville win 2-1.
Boyd off at HT (2-1). Billy T an unused sub.

LB Jare Uronen a full game for Charlotte. He will be absent with Finland over the FIFA break, and that maybe Tuiloma's opening for game time.

Tuiloma on the pine.
Edit - Columbus have a guy come in off the bench at 18 mins, and he's sent off 6 mins later!

Edit 2 - Took until 83rd min, but Charlotte score and then add a 2nd 5 mins later for 2-0 win. Tuiloma stays on the bench.

Read the other day that Auckland FC are keen on both him and M Boxall, but tricky given current MLS season runs to Oct-Nov and both are under contract.

Billy T the more likely you'd think to be able negotiate an early release from his Charlotte contract - and the more likely you'd think to want to leave the MLS, even if it's a paycut to join the Black Knights. He's in danger of falling out of AWs 2026 squad reckoning not playing. Foley could probably arrange for him to be paid well (maybe even captain) somehow around the salary cap.

Unused sub in a 1-0 loss.

Surely in talks with Auckland FC, and Charlotte to see if he can get a release.
His last playing mins in the MLS, 16th July last year.

Full game Billy T in a 3-2 win. Late 85th min winner for Charlotte.Hopefully Tuiloma can get a run of games.

Toronto's Kevin Long (ex Burnley team mate of the Woodsman) sent off post 90 mins. Charlotte’s Ashley Westwood the more happy ex Claret.

From Flying Kiwis. He got his chance last weekend, after another CB was out injured.

Okay then, how did he track? Yeah... alright. He was definitely rusty as is to be expected after such a long absence of games. Definitely don’t check the comments sections because there’s some residual bad will against him from the Charlotte FC fanbase from last season (which even then is unfair). It was Tuiloma’s long ball that led to Kerwin Vargas’ 39th minute goal, although he didn’t do the best on Prince Owusu’s equaliser on 49’, stepping up too late to keep Owusu onside.

He also sorta cost them another goal at the other end when a possible response five mins later was randomly disallowed. Liel Abada’s sneaky set piece effort (converting on the second attempt after a chip over the top, courtesy of a rebound off the post) was deemed illegal thanks to a slight hold by Tuiloma on a defender several metres away on the edge of the area. But that was a ridiculous decision, laughably overzealous officiating, can’t blame a bro for that. Anyway, both teams scored again then Partick Agyemang won it for Charlotte in the 85th minute.

Dean Smith, Charlotte head coach: “I’ve no idea, I think the referee’s made a mistake, in my opinion, for Liel’s first goal from the free kick. He felt it was an infringement from Bill. He didn’t give offside, he said it was an infringement from Bill. It wasn’t. So they got that wrong. But just pleased we put the game to bed in the end.”

I thought [Tuiloma] came in and did really well. We had the game against North Carolina FC the other week for him and he got ninety minutes so he was match fit. He trains really well, he’s got a great attitude. So I didn’t really have any qualms about putting him in. He knows the league, he understands the league, he’s been in it a long time so I thought his experience would certainly help young Privett who I think’s done really well at centre-half so far.”

Good good. That NCFC game was presumably a friendly but there’s no information about it anywhere. Probs behind closed doors. Important thing is that the manager seems to think on him fondly and thought he played well. Also hyped up his “good switch of play”. There was then a very weird moment when a journo asked how Dean Smith compared Tuiloma’s style with Charlotte to that with the New Zealand national team...

Dean Smith: “I’ve no idea because I’m not a big watcher of the kiwis, of the national team with New Zealand. I used to a few years ago because I know Ricki Herbert who was the head coach but not at the moment.”

So watched the highlights of Monday morning's Kiwi MLS derby. Boxy's Minnestota winning 3-0 on the road in Charlotte.

Tuiloma actually went close to scoring early on (about 1.30 mins in) from a diving header. Good save by St Clair in goal for Minny.

But Billy T's primary role is as a defender and Charlotte got cut apart by Minny's fast transistions, especially down Charlotte's right side. Tuiloma who didn't look the slimmest(?) playing with a young American CB in Privett. Their communication maybe not the greatest.

Suspect when the other CB returns from injury, the ex AW will be back to the pine. I really get the feeling his time Stateside is done, and at 29 he should look at a move to his newly formed hometown ALM club. The prodigal Auckland Samoan lad, after 10 years overseas coming back home. Would be a real good PR story. Maybe he can buy his dad a replacement fishing boat at long last!

From Flying Kiwis.

The Loons (Minnesota) went on to claim a 3-0 road win, dealing Charlotte their first home defeat this season. Tuiloma was okay... but his lack of a combination with Andrew Privett was exposed several times by Minnesota’s fast breaks. He’s going to need to do a lot more to win back a permanent starting spot once the injuries clear up. Michael Boxall hardly had to do anything for his clean sheet, other than anchoring a switch to a back three when in possession. No worries there.
