Maybe trying to break into England and it didn't quite happen...
Benjamin Van Den Broek (Koninklijke HFC | Netherlands)
the more you think about it the worse he must have been in the practices before his only cap...
If he's got AW ambitions surely a bit of time in the Central League needed?
The one-cap All White continues to play for Telstar in the Eerste Divisie in the Netherlands. He has played every single match this season except one, when he was suspended after a second yellow the previous match.
Telstar were in the KNVB Cup until the 2nd round when they were defeated by ADO Den Haag from the Eredivisie. Van den Broek's team currently find themselves in 15th position out of 20 teams. Only one team get relegated from this division this season, and Telstar are 16 points clear of the last-placed team.
Van den Broek's next match is at home to RKC Waalwijk, Tamati Williams' team, on 13 January 2017. His season so far:
Competition | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Yellow cards | Yellow/red cards | Straight reds | Minutes |
Eerste Divisie | 18 | — |
1 | 2 | 1 | — | 1,531 |
KNVB Cup | 2 | — | — | — | — | — | 156 |
Total | 20 | — | 1 | 2 | 1 | — | 1,687 |
Telstar aren't on the best streak at the moment, having not won a match since 14 October. Since then they've had 4 draws and 5 losses. They're 7 points away from promotion playoffs.
I question if he was never called up again was due to to the club standard he was playing at, or if he was actually ever eligible in the first place.
I mean, his mum was a kiwi citizen, so he got a NZ passport.
Help me out here, but I am trying to put two and two together.
Deklan Wynne has NZ Citizenship, I know this, cause I went to school with the boy. He had an NZ Passport, but he wasn't eligible for NZ, cause he didn't spend 5 years in the country after the age of 18.
Ben Van Den Broek was called up in March 2015. In June/July 2015, during the pacific games, Deklan was ruled not eligible for NZ, so did many other kiwis, Storm Roux, James Musa, Sam Burfoot etc. After that, Van Den Broek was never called up.
Was he another? Cause I can't find any other ties to NZ, apart from his mother being able to get citizenship because she was a citizen. Does that mean, if I move to Mongolia, and I get citizenship there, then I move back to NZ, my son can play for Mongololia despite being born in NZ?
Likewise, this is query, Correct me if I am wrong though.

Interesting... you may be onto something. In this interview during the Wynnegate saga, he says he's not sure if he's eligible.
If his mum or grandparent wasn't born in NZ he could still be eligible if he was entitled to be a citizen from birth. Ie she was a NZ citizen other than by descent when he was born.

IIRC Themi has never lived in NZ either and he is definitely eligible
Has moved to Koninklijke HFC on a 1 and a half year deal.
Is that a third tier club?
Yes. It says in that article he is looking to play at a less serious level. Guess he's winding down his playing career.
Is that a third tier club?
Correct. Haarlem are part of the newly expanded (about 2 seasons ago) Tweede Divisie which is the third tier and is now nationwide. Most of the clubs in it are part-time with some being amateur. Still a very decent standard of football though - akin to the National League (5th tier) in England.
This probably means the end of his AW career as well? Of course we won't know until a new AW coach is appointed, but I think his chances of wearing the fern again are pretty slim.

you can hardly call 10 minutes at the end of a friendly an All Whites career!
I never really thought he was eligible. He literally disappeared after the Deklan Wynne Saga, and never made an appearance again, although going to Barrow in England's fifth tier didn't really help, but the return to a div 2 dutch side still didn't earn him a re-call, so I think this was an eligibility thing, although I don't know for sure.

He is \ was eligible as his Mother is NZ born. It was more he just wasn't good enough, also was supposedly a bit of a dick in the dressing room

Oh I heard his mother wasn't actually born in NZ, but lived here and held an NZ passport through citizenship - unsure what the actual details are.
Good on him for making himself available to us and earning a cap off the bench but surely the days of "Scott Smiths" are past us although Hudson continually selecting Dyer... hmmm
As a side note my PE teacher at HBHS was Brent Anderson whom only played for the ABs once off the bench against Aussie, but boy did he wank on and on about it, even though we had many international sportsmen including a former Scottish Rugby International, on the staff.

Yep, thats correct
Not specifically commenting on BVDB situation as his chance/eligibility has already been discussed but:
Its quite possible NZF are missing out on looking at/selecting a player if their interpretation of FIFA rules is incorrect.
From memory the form NZF gave to potential U17 (all NZ ?) players to determine if they are NZ eligible asks the questions as per FIFA Article 17(acquisition of a new Nationality): ie
a) were you born in NZ ?
b) were either of your biological parents born in NZ ?
c) were any grandparents born in NZ ?
d) have you lived here 5yrs after age 18
& says something like - "If you don't tick Y to any of the above you are not eligible and NZF will need to seek exemption etc..."
However, a child of a parent who is a "Citizen by Grant" (which offers the same rights in passing on Citizenship as if the parent was born in NZ) would be eligible (even if ticking N to all the above questions) under preceding FIFA Article 15:1
"Any player holding a permanent nationality that is not dependent on residence in a certain country is eligible to play for the rep team of that country"

You're absolutely right. There's even been a precedent for it and it has been proved by the CAS that a player who doesn't meet Article 7 is still eligible if he was a citizen at birth, as he never had to acquire the nationality.

Also taught me briefly at Wairarapa College. Not a bad bloke, but for sure often liked telling a good story rather than doing any actual teaching. Played 3 games for ABs in total.

Yeah spot on, talked all day about the Jap and Aussie games (the Jap ones are not counted as full internationals for some reason) during our lessons and did diddly squat the rest of the time.
Has moved to Koninklijke HFC on a 1 and a half year deal.
Article says he fell out with the manager at his previous club Telstar and had his contract terminated by mutual consent last December.
He hadn't played for Telstar at all this season.
And that he wants to concentrate on activities outside of football - suggesting he's going part-time at his new club.
(Which would only be possible in the third division) Still aged only 30 so you'd think he has a few more years left in him...
Has played in Koninklijke's last two games
https://int.soccerway.com/players/benjamin-van-den...
Koninklijke lie 6th on the Tweede Divisie (new national third div.) table
Played the full 90 in the 1-0 away win vs. 4th place GVVV last weekend.
Made his debut and played the full 90 in the 1-1 away draw vs third place Rijnsburgse Boys the previous weekend.
