Technically they have great close ball skills, something we could learn from. But the final product was lacking. Really, South Korea should have scored at least 3 goals

Even right at the end when Cha Du Ree made the run, and no one gambled at the near post, they all waited deep and Ryan got an easy take.

I don't think Son was on song this tournament, cos he's a real goal threat. Also I think the Korean tactics were more aimed towards clean sheets than hatfuls of goals...

Why do they keep banging on about it being Australia's first trophy? They won the Oceania Nations Cup plenty of times.

It's a bit strange supporting Aussie, but I was...terrific game, great advert for the game.  I guess the Oceania Cup will bring the same thrills and skills ?

Because apart from a short period in 1974, football wasn't played in Australia until 2005.

Great game to watch.

Was conflicted- I've lived two years in both countries. Though I played a truck load of football in Korea and none in Aussie.

South Korea got hurt by two calls by the ref that seemed to favour them. First- the marginal free kick stopped the wave after wave of attack when they seemed certain to score, and had Aussie completely on the ropes. Second- the ref didn't call for what seemed like a certain foul on Juric (or maybe that should be fouls) and then he wriggles past his defender and sets up the winner.

I also found it weird that Aussie picked up 4 yellows and Sth Korea got none, cos they pulled just as many professional fouls on the break-away.

The ref was a real lottery. Seemed like one of those guys who...well reminded me of Ben Williams tbh. Inconsistent.

Inconsistent is certainly the word. If you were watching from an Aussie perspective you'd likely point out the high boot in the face of the Aussie defender immediately prior to SK equalising. The ref later blew fouls for two other high boot tackles that appeared less dangerous. Also there was what looked like a clear foul on Juric in the SK penalty area in extra time.

The Kruse booking I'm in two minds on. In practice a yellow card for Kruse every time he steps on the park seems only fair. I thought that the ref whipped out the card after Kruse yelled something at him while he was on the ground, which is why I thought it might've been for dissent.

wait, TAB paying $101 for Korea to win? I'm in.

edit: TAB arent even offering Asian Cup... why the fudge is this forum advertising odds?

$101 would have been the last odds offered on Korea to win before TAB suspended betting. Odds dont disappear from the forums until the match is over, even if TAB have suspended betting, because there's no way for the forums to tell if the odds are suspended because the match is over or if it's because a goal was just scored. Happy?

That is like saying football was not played until 1982 in NZ . and then again in 2010.

Did we join Asia in 2005?

Congratulations Socceroos!

What an amazing game that was. Enjoyed every minute. Fantastic tournament, great for the game.

I wish NZ would join the AFC, that's where it's all happening and in my opinion the only way forward for the game in this part of the world.

Just look at where Australia is now

Great tournament, watched most of the games and enjoyed them all. The final was brilliant - drama packed - amazing crowd. Glad Australia won it, big boost for the game in this part of the world.

Australia do a fantastic job of big sporting events - just a travesty and tragedy they didn't get the 2022 WC. Australia v

The absolute lack of coverage of the final in mainstream media shows how insular we are here. And this was an exciting game of football, complete opposite of the semifinal Australia played against the UAE.

It was on Three sport, toward the end. Showed all the goals and the trophy lifting.

We wont because there are too many heads buried in the sand and too many egos amongst out heiracey. Shame but I dont think NZ football has progressed that much since 2010, let alone 1982. Sure some of it has but the rate of progress is slow as.

This will be an interesting game. I watched the Poland vs Germany game last October (Euro qualifier) and Germany while still strong is clearly showing a post-WC fatigue and a slight slump. They will likely go for rejuvenation of the squad with many old war-horses due to retire. In contrast Australia seems to have done it already post WC-2014 but ahead of the AFC.

It must be fascinating for Aussie culture to have the Asian Cup there. Their mainstream culture has been so tied up in the Anglo-sphere (see above) it must be really interesting for them to have all these countries who haven't been traditional rivals all of a sudden there.

Be a really interesting thing to study the coverage of the Asian Cup compared to say the cricket or other more 'traditionally' Aussie sport.

I think it is good that it is held in Oz, despite it's entrenched bigotry I wouldn't think that there wouldn't be much hostility in the stands or on the pitch between rivals such as Japan and China (or Iran - Iraq. or Sth Korea - Best Korea).  Different setting and most of the supporters will be there to watch the football rather than seek redress for historical slights.

Having attended to a couple of major tournaments in Asia, I think one big advantage of having the cup in Oz was that they were able to tap into the various immigrant populations, leading to decent crowds throughout the tournament. Consequently, attendances didn't really suffer as much as they have in more countries with more homogeneous populations.

Probably helped that the Aussies went all the way, & sustained local interest too.

You are quite right, the OFC SHOULD merge with AFC because it could improve the lower nations as well of New Zealand.
