In my humble opinion, I think they have let themselves down. Minimal media build up was probably a good thing otherwise everyone would have been expecting world beaters but I thinkk overall they have been disappointing, giving the ball away far too easily and playing a way too defensive game plan. Sure they scored 5 in their ladt game but against who? And two of those were tap ins. I want them to do well and I didn't  enjoy seeing them get beat by the USA like they did.

But I do think they need to go into a match much more purposefully, go in positive and attack. Cut out this pass it backwards crap when going forward would have been easier. Its a very English style of play which doesn't  suit the types of players we have in the squad. Hence guys like Rufer look awful, yet we know, he has some skill. I actually feel sorry for them, its like they have been held back and hindered.

I thought Antony Hudson had overhalled things so that all NZ teams would play like Barcelona...

Wouldnt it just be easier to get barcelona to start playing like NZ teams?

Goal Keepers: Both get a 6. Both looked good in patches, but they both made some poor decisions. Sail probably showed up a little worse than Tzaved because his mistakes contributed to goals.

Edge 6: Played out of position at RB. Generally did well in terms of shutting down players and looked comfortable on the ball. Struggled to find outlets when in possession. I blame tactics for this.

Wynn 6.5: generally defended very well but lack quality going forward. Most of his crosses were over hit or too close to the keeper. It was shame he didn't try to get forward more often because when he did he looked a threat. In the first few games, he tended to play back or square too much.

Mitchell 5: Good first game, woeful second. Considering he had been a linch pin in the team prior to the tournament he really fell out of favour quickly.

Brotherton:7 Strong in the air and scored a good goal to make up for his missed sitter. Bar for diving in a couple times but he generally played big and strong. Looks ok with the ball at feet, however, never tried to carry it forward.

Tuiloma 6.5: Had a great game against Portugal. Didn't influence the game as much as expected in the pool play, but still looks to have all the time in the world.

Messenger 6: showed good intent going forward. A little lacking positionally, but did well in his one game.

Blake 8: 1 good cameo off the bench and a great game startig at RB. Looked our best player and contained a very strong team all night. Would be very surprised if he doesn't get something out of this.

Whihonga 6: Did ok but not a midfielder. Never switched despite it been on regularly last night for example and seemed to only ever play back or square. A big issue I also had with our midfield was they never seemed willing to carry the ball forward and make the opposition D have to think.

Dyer 5.5: Good engine and did a lot of work on D trying to shut down the opposition. Needs to work on hitting his passes and not getting caught in possession. For every good thing he did, he did something wrong.

Patterson 7.5: Looked like he wanted to play and do something. Good quick feet and made some nice attacking runs.

Lewis:4.5: why did he play so much. Terrible decision making pretty much in every game.

Stevens 6.5: Looked to attack and was technically better than I expected. Made some good runs down the flanks and tried to play a possession game.

Billington 6.5: Scored a goal, hand a hand in a couple and worked hard all day. Also the youngest player in the squad at still just 17. That been said he has a poor touch, can't head a ball despite his size and his passing is limited.

Ridenton: 5.5: had some nice touches, but not helped by our play in the first games.

Rufer: had some nice touches and was ok as a target, but struggled playing in an unfamiliar role.

De Jong: not enough minutes

Brown 7: slotted in really well and looked comfortable on the ball. Made one or two poor passes but for a guy without playing a single minute previously its hard to be too harsh.

Who will get contracts / trials

Dyer was "dire". Had a poor game against Portugal I felt.  Not a chance in hell of getting a trial/contract at a pro club.  I also think Tuiloma played better over the tournament then you've given him credit for.

Yeah, considering he obviously wasn't 100% fit and some of the passes he had to deal with from teammates - I thought Bill did pretty damn well. You can tell he's maturing as a player, as when he was thrown in the deep end for the All Whites he disappeared a bit.
