Interestingly I've heard anecdotal evidence from a couple of people lately, where the champions league has become the main drawcard in their household. A friend with 3 young boys said they love their football, and will record and watch the champions league games after school, but that they aren't very interested in the EPL. They want to see the messis and ronaldos, as well as the top english clubs, so the champions league is the place to be. One of the boys has become a Roma fan, and another an Altetico Madrid fan, from watching that regularly. They're all 12 and under.

Another friend said he's observed similar behaviour in his son.

Neither of them are Dads who had a footballing background, so they haven't bought any english team allegiances to the table, and this is what has organically resulted.

Obviously it's just two instances so I won't claim it as a trend, but food for thought.

I was thinking more in terms of who the paying customers are at the moment, the market Spark and Sky are squabbling over, but the next generation is certainly interesting. Anecdotally all of the NZ fans of a similar age to myself that I've met have almost always supported an English club, with the handful of European club supporters I've met being from those countries. But with the amount of kids you see wearing Ronaldo/Messi/Neymar jerseys it's conceivable that English clubs won't be the sole focus of the next generation of fans here.

The Premier League still seems to be such a 'default' league in NZ, in the sense that it's the only league you'll ever see given regular coverage by our news outlets. Can't recall ever seeing La Liga, Serie A etc popping up in a sports segment on One News, yet they'll always run through all of the PL results and show a handful of the goals from a given weekend (as an aside will be interesting to see what they do next year given they seem to crib all of their highlights from Sky).

Ryan Thomas is essentially anonymous playing at European Cup-winning PSV, yet if he snared a move to a Brighton or a Bournemouth he'd suddenly be deemed relevant by TVNZ and would get the Wood/Reid treatment in terms of coverage. But I guess the Eredivisie will always be a bit too niche for our mainstream rugby-lead sports sections.

Availability of broadcast-quality footage is your answer. During the PLP days even the EPL footage often looked a bit dodgy.

That's likely your internet speed. By default PLP would stream at 'best available'. Problem there is when you're in a bit of a dip in terms of speed it'll drop down. That's where I'd find a PS4 app super handy as I'm hard wired right into our router to minimise losing speed of wifi!

will be interesting to see if every CL game is broadcast live on sky... should be easier with split kick off times - 2 games kicking off at 5:55gmt, and 6 at 8:00gmt per game day

Might be a good omen for future coverage of his career.

Affordability is also an issue - I believe that rights holder Sky in the UK charge an arm and a leg even for highlights of Premier League games.

Major news networks like the BBC and CNN with much bigger budgets than NZ television refuse to pay the ridiculous amounts, hence they never screen any Premier League highlights and instead just show still pictures when they report on Premier League matches.

News networks in NZ take their highlights pictures from the local rights holders - beIN currently, previously PLP and before that Sky NZ.

Hopefully they'll be able to reach an agreement with Spark to screen highlights.

And also that a free-to-air broadcaster will be able to rech an agreement with Spark to screen a delayed game and a highlights package every week as Prime currently does and before that, TV One.

TV One I believe are broadcast partners with Spark for the next Rugby World Cup, so maybe there will be some Premier League on TV  One again next season?

More details on the Spark EPL coverage in the Herald this week:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/football-soccer/news/ar...

Will stream via an app useable on most devices, including some smart TV's, Apple TV, Chromecast etc.

People will be able to subscribe just to individual sports like the EPL or take packages.

"Newsroom reports that Spark is likely to price the streaming service at a similar price point to the cost of a Netflix or Lightbox (Spark's TV and entertainment SVOD service) subscription, which will be around $13 a month."

There will be some free content on their EPL platform available even to non-subscribers which is intriguing - just highlights or something more?

There's also a video interview there with the Spark Sport CEO who was formerlly Head of Content at TVNZ.

Sounds to me like they know what they're doing and will draw on the experience of Premier League Pass, while avoiding the mistakes that Optus have made in Australia such as with their World Cup streaming fiasco. .

As they mention, they were a partner of Premier League Pass in the past.

Great to see that Sky are adding more leagues - no doubt preparing for the hole that will be left by beIN losing the English Premier League next season.

18 hours straight of Serie A matches on Sport Pop-up 1 (ch. 55) from 6.20 am Tuesday

Continiuous live and delayed coverage till midnight.

I notice that broadcasts of Scottish football started this weekend on beIN Sport on Sky too

I'm currently watching a replay of Partick vs. Celtic on beIN Sport 2.

Anyone use the Vodafone TV box for Sky and if so do you still get access to Bein Connect like you do with actual Sky? My 12 month free Sky Sport deal has ended so looking at options for the next deal now.

Teasers...good marketing

And if they match or better PLP they'll get my ~13 bucks a month.

Happy enough to pay, but not OTT, and only for decent product.

Shame about Duke seemingly not renewing their Bundesliga rights. Was always a nice Saturday morning watch and less free-to-air football can only be a bad thing for NZ.

Decent game it was. Celtic had about 85% of possession and hit the cross bar at least 3 times. Yet the Ger's hung in there and rode their luck. Great atmosphere and the Referee imho did an excellent job and got the calls right. After the game I flicked over to watch Arsenal and left it after 10 minutes. The referee in that game was an embarrassment and seemed to get everything wrong. Complete muppet.

Bundesliga now on Bein2 by the looks, Schalke-Bayern at 4:20am Sunday.

Does anyone know how long it takes for a game to appear as on-demand, after the full time whistle?

Also what happens if you want to watch the game from the beginning but you don't get up in time? On the app or website, can you watch it from the start even though it's still going in real time?

I know I can probably check FAQs or something for this stuff, but I'm wondering if any of you have experience in that type of scenario and if it went well?

Games have always been up by the morning when I've checked (around 8ish), so I'd guess it'll be pretty much straight after the whistle.

Also, you can rewind up to 2 hours on the website when "watching live", so that's enough to watch from the start etc.

Thanks for that!

When you say you can rewind up to 2 hours, is that on the Bein 1 and Bein 2 channels that are running live on the app/website only?

If the game I want isn't showing on those channels I usually click "Competition", then "Premier League", and I can select other live games from there. Do you know if rewinding for up to 2 hours works in that instance? Sorry I know that's a very specific question you may not know the answer to... I really should've tested these things out during a live game myself...

From memory, all live games on the website appear along side the Bein 1 and Bein 2 channels (in the black space below) - that's where I usually go to watch them, not the way that you described above.

I'm guessing that you'll be able to rewind to the start of each individual game, but haven't tried it myself to know for sure

I've done the rewind thing before. You will have to play it, and you just move the slider at the bottom back to the beginning. You'll want to have it on mute and cover most of the screen while you do this so you don't see anything.

I had already checked that prior to the game.

According to your very own website, this match is indeed a game that has been scheduled as a catch-up match:

https://www.beinsports.com/nz/premier-league-catch-up-tv/news/premier-league-catch-up-january/1060997

This is either total incompetence, or outright deception on your part.

I assume that I will now not get access this game either way, so I will go and check the result, having wasted my morning waiting and hoping to be able to get access to what I pay for, and what Bein Sports themselves say that I should expect.

Yet another day of disappointment with your service this season, I will take my complaints to social media instead, please don't bother responding.

Hi Paul,

We apologize for the confusion this may have caused.

Please be informed that the Premier League broadcasting rights only allow us to show a total of 29 of a team’s 38 fixtures on catch up. Unfortunately, the match (West Ham v Arsenal) which you wanted to watch was not one of those chosen matches.

We hope this will help clarify about your concern.

If you have any further questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to contact us again.

Thank you for choosing beIN SPORTS CONNECT.

Thank you for acknowledging the issue, however this doesn't help me much at all.

I had already checked for replays, the next replay of this match is not for 12 hours, and is scheduled late at night NZ time, this is not a feasible option for me personally.

I just want to know if you are actually going to be able to fix this. By suggesting I watch a replay, you have not given me any confidence.

No excuse for the delay in 2019. Plenty of streaming platforms offer on-demand as the content is streamed.

Hoping like hell Spark get the memo.

On the plus side, at least you didn't have to watch the game.

lol at this Spark can't even get their own TV streaming site to work 100% of the time. I'm dreading how they are going to screw up their live sports offering this year.
