I'm probably too old, but this all seems a bit precious. Chants by their nature are simple and easy to pick up.
We're going to watch the football, indulge in 'terrace' humour and sing along to some basic football chants.
If a chant is good enough it will be picked up by the crowd..ah I see a fault in my argument :-)

Maybe you are.

We're just trying to make things better. As you so sarcastically point out, the chants aren't catching on. Maybe because they're not good enough.

I can't think of any better way to try to improve things than to get everyone who is interested together for a few beers and a chat.

Your constructive contribution is most welcome, but not anticipated.

yeah agree with the idea that the best should catch on organically, but also appreciate the efforts to make people aware of chants and create a forum for people to perhaps come up with new ones. There is no harm in it. It may even be fun!

Fair call. I am Spartacus!

I think the main thing that has been lost is the pre-game Gathering, there can be only one :-)
The first two, maybe three seasons, the pre-game atmosphere at the BackBencher was great. This has been diluted as other pubs have got on board and 'wooed' the Phoenix fans.
My suggestion would be to have pre-game and post-game pub or pubs, where an atmosphere of Phoenix supporters chanting  can be promoted//encouraged.Then the football/event 'tourists' can come along and join in, enjoy the pre-match sing-along. Plus us die-hards can be re-invigorated to chant in the pub and at the game. Let's be honest the pre-match singing/chanting at the BB has been fairly lacklustre in the last couple of seasons

Pre-game would be the main focus and the obvious pubs would be Four Kings/The Pub for early starters then BackBencher for at least an hour before game. We could consider a march to the game from the BB, when we all leave at the same time and head to the ground as a group with flags flying and voices straining :-)

I totes agree. In fact I had a pint with ex-pat Feverite Nic Van Hat last night and he said exactly the same about chanting at the bencher.

The sad truth is that those of us who used to be at the raucous heart are a bit older and lazier and less drunken. We need to find our youth a bit and re-energise. I can't believe I just used the word re-energise. I hate myself a bit.

Anyway. We'll see what happens on Sunday. Might just be me, News and Dale again.

Having thrown my hat into the ring I'll come long to throw my Pom sarcasm into the discussion :-(
I'll also be the self-designated representative of Capes Corner, based at Aisle 21 AA.
Where we invariably get our complaining, interrupted by unwillingly having to hold a corner of those pesky YF banners.
We also have to endure the infrequent visits to the YF Zone of bwtcf (wtf) and his flags.
However I must warn you, that depending on a certain referendum in an unimportant part of the world, we may be leading a Steff led referendum for independence from the YF Zone.

I have definitely noticed a decline in Pre-Match chanting over the past few seasons. It is probably easier for me to see this too as I am only present at a handful of matches each season.

Unfortunately I think one reason for this is that the Backbencher went through its forced upgrades and this has changed the atmosphere in the pub somewhat.

Can I offer a suggestion that there should be some discussion on ways to address this issue to add to the Pre-Match experience.

Just re-read this and altho' the discussion has progressed I'd like to point out that my sarcasm was based on a 'crowd' not the chants.
Since the first season I've had a fantastic time at every home game The YF chants have added to my enjoyment every season
I was dragged along to the second Phoenix pre-season game by my London and Glasgow mates and now have a larger group of friends from Chile, Germany, Russia and even NZ. Such easy friendship is something that doesn't happen at rugby games in NZ, where people keep to their limited group. A particular highlight of my time in the Fever Zone was trying to explain to a German friend of a friend that the 'Seagull' chant was funny.
So that's my Pommie optimism/being positive worn out for a long, long time. Bring on 12 October. Let the misery commence :-)

I have one suggestion in regards to Stand up. I know there's a hardcore in the zone who chant the correct tune but they get drowned out by everyone else joining in. How about coming up with a different chant using the Stand up tune so people get to learn it.

Re-pre-match at the BB from comments above:
The BB has changed and unless we can get outside then it's not going to be a great place to congregate. However I'm sure if we talk to Boycie he'll support us, in every way, as he has done from the first season. I am a BB old boy, altho' not so much over the last few years, so I'd like to support Boycie. Plus I'm keen to support the Four Kings (Five Stags). They are the two pubs that have supported the YF/Phoenix from the first season.

Strangely enough, as a German, he did seem to have a strong Italian accent and kept saying:
So let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but 'Seagull' is  funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how?
However he was an exceedingly good fellow, for a German of Italian descent.

This is the one chant we should not be doing. I have friends (Ok, maybe not friends, but I know people, non-YF people, in the real world)  who are season ticket holders in different areas of the ground and they really loathe, despise, hate 'Stand Up'

Are Smithy's attempts to grow the YF fan base going to be a topic of discussion?

I think i should take some of the blame for the diminished atmos at the BB. Since the fire I have been relegated to a deskrole, and only work part-time and no longer have much input into the events planning here. Also since I let my season ticket lapse, I haven't been to nearly as many games. As the unofficial YF - BB link, i have been more than lax. So either myself or Boycie will be there on Sunday.

Good stuff....I can't be there but I thought I'd suggest one even though this probably is the wrong thread. Arsenal fans sing this chant called "who's that team we call the Arsenal" its on YouTube and is pretty basic and can be changed around to fit us.

-Who's that team we call the phoenix

-Who's that team we call the phoenix

-We're the boys in yellow stripes and we're f*cking dynamite and we're gunna win the league!
