Peverley not resigned? Interesting, his or the club decision do you know?

Hobson-McVeigh should be good. Heard he had a good winter for Birko

He did, but he needs to toughen up a bit. Dropping to the turf when he gets touched at the next level up will definitely not work.

Is he still predominantly a drop-deep-and-play-long-diagonal-passes-type midfielder? Or has he developed his game since I last saw him play?

Is Perry Cotton apart of the HBU coaching staff again? Because if so I can't see him standing for Jack trying to drop to the ground each time he's touched, hopefully he'll shake that out of him if that's what he's been doing

You've nailed him in one there TL.
I think he is a good footballer but has some glaring weaknesses. He is a bit soft and while he does have a short game, he needs to use it more. Those raking passes work at NRFL level but may not for teams that are targeting him and play for him to do it. Put it this way, you know he plays that way, how many others do? Teams will stand off wingers waiting for him to do it then shut it down once the ball is in the air and get possession back.

Peverly asked to take pay cut, so told them where to go. Can see the plan Hobson picks ball up deep and looks for lovemore in behind.

Then I guess the next question is can he be coached? Like you said he has some good things about him but he might need to work on the rest of his game. I could be completely wrong but to me he used to seem like a kid who thought he had the game all figured out. I've seen very decent CL players become predictable at ASBP level so it will be interesting to see how he goes.

Good question. I wanna say he is, but I have my suspicions. I think your opinions are on the money the TL.

We'll have to wait and see but the thing that makes me wonder is that he sounds like he's a key part of one of the better Northern League sides yet neither of the Auckland ASBP teams will touch him.

I have the exact same thought. In the 3 years, he has been TW, Waikato and now HBU. To be fair, ACFC do not play a game plan to his strengths and it seems Waitakere need anyone right now to make a team

To be fair, Jack is only just 21 so would expect him to improve all-round as he matures and spends more time playing at higher level of Prems and ASBP.

I have seen enough of him playing to know he has a good short game - but with Birkenhead's open and wide style of play you'll always see more of him moving the ball over greater distances. As for going to ground...he very often gets targetted early by opposition teams who want to disrupt Birkenhead's game.

Chad Coombes lined him up 3 seconds in on Saturday and agree 3-4-3, its obvious what they were trying to do. I guess teams do that as well because of the way he does react. To be honest, I've not minded seeing a hard tackle go in on a softie and while Jack does get targeted, he does not help himself, and thus, teams want to hit him more for being soft because one thing footballers do not like is soft opponents.

He's not soft. Refs are soft for not offering better protection to players that are obviously being targetted.  More than one ocassion this season Jack been deliberately lined-up and taken out first time he's on the ball and opponent not even carded.

Right....

He is soft. He can't ride tackles at all and goes down if he even gets the slightest touch. (that's not to detract from the fact that he is a good footballer). Yes he does get targeted more than other Birkenhead players but I've seen other players that get similar attention at least have an element of grit about them.

Don't take my word for it, lets watch and see how he goes this summer playing in the big boys league.

I have to laugh at your 'offer better protection'. All players should be afforded equal protection from referees. You say it like he deserves more than others.

Didn't mean more protection just for Jack - meant standard of refs poor in general in regards to offering ANY players protection.

Refs I have seen in about a dozen Prem games this year looked to have difficulty assessing intent and nature of tackles correctly and I wonder if this is a reflection of what level they have played the game at.

Interesting. I've seen a lot less referees at the top level this year and more of the ones that do the ASBP - whether that is by design, I don't know but I guess they need a break at some point as well. I guess if he is struggling with their interpretation, then he is in for more of the same over summer.

i don't think he is soft - when was the last time he went off injured due to a tackle?  won't have happened often...  I think he does go down easy but that's not being soft imo.

FYI from what i hear the Birko players were all asked by Waitakere if they would like to trial and most of them (if not all of them) turned it down.

sorry i'm not in the loop this season, my contacts have all got married or retired and my son is no longer playing football so i' m not around much. i did hear that peverly wasn't in the mix but he is too good at this level not to be picked up by someone, if he'll move. robertson is definitely back, think he'll die here and be HBU coach one day. not much to enthuse about with what was floating around this winter.expect danny wilson, rodeka, robertson as definites, lottery as to who else, a couple of young guys will get a run but majority will be returnees from last year i'd imagine

I thought he was the back up keeper for rapa united for the central league, but I could be wrong

Not sure about lucas. Mosquera is in though from manawatu. Good signing. Tom Biss might be back too. They keep things pretty quiet round there, I see others are franchises are announcing their signinings in the media.

I think the environment and coaching set up is very good down there. Again, they go under the radar. JHM should relish the opportunity for a fresh challenge and go well. Looks like an exciting league this year.

Although Richard Gillespie hasn't played during the winter, he's still a top class Keeper. Would be hard to juggle Imray and Gillespie.
