I'm not sure the big european clubs will be that interested in this format tbh? Sounds like a massive grind on their teams  in the summer off-season. The numbers would really have to stack up.

Well that sounds like a large pile of crap.

But FIFA sees the huge $$$ in it no doubt. (And let's be honest, this is little about competition and everything about FIFA clipping the ticket).

Thanks, but no thanks.

What a stupid idea. It should be played by the champions of every confederations and that's it. Making it so big is unnecesary and would make European clubs' calendars even more full of matches

Phew, that's not going to go down well with clubs - they already get minced with the World Cup, their own internal Confederations Cup and the potential for overseas players to be playing for theirs.

https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/who-we-are/news/fifa-council-votes-for-the-introduction-of-a-revamped-fifa-club-world-cup

The FIFA Council approved the establishment of a new landmark club competition: a revamped, 24-team FIFA Club World Cup, the pilot edition of which will be held in June and July 2021.

The revamped FIFA Club World Cup will be played during the international match calendar slot that corresponded to the FIFA Confederations Cup. In the 2021 pilot edition, the 24 teams will be split into eight groups of three teams each, with the group winners to qualify for the quarter-finals in a knockout format.

Will OFC bother with a OFC Champions League in the 3 years between, the new 4 yearly CWC cycle?

Can’t be that cheap to run, and be honest doesn’t have much prestige without the annual CWC appearance attached.

What for the Handy Prem having to wait 4 years for the CWC appearance cash? Presume FIFA will make it a much bigger sum for the OFC club team that qualifies, and if a NZ team, NZF will just need to spread that cash through the teams over 4 years rather than annually.

Don't think so. It comes at a huge cost, and with basically nothing to play for, why would you bother? There are potentially huge ramifications for Handy Prem too, it's not really great news for NZ football. Especially since the revamped CWC will replace the Confederations Cup, which will also hit us, not just because of that Cup itself, but the Oceania Nations' Cup could end up bring scrapped too with no carrot at the end of the stick.

Yeah true re OFC Nations Cup. I see FIFA are still yet to decide if a Global Nations League will happen. Infantino has been pushing this hard, and general need for minnow nations (incl OFC countries) to get more international matches, not less. So if the OFC Nations Cup is scrapped, FIFA really have to get AFC to start an AFC Nations League, with OFC teams included somehow in that.

Infantino has had a wad of middle eastern oil cash thrown at him, and their interest isn't in promoting games like PNG V Singapore or Fiji v Malaysia. Big part of the unease about the global nations league is where the money's coming from, and what ramifications that may have for the big FIFA cash cow of the World Cup, and UEFA is obviously not on board for a whole other range of reasons.

The fact that they couldn't get the global nations league off the ground, even in principle, this time around doesn't really bode well for the whole idea.

Terrible idea. It’s the club World Cup, the winning team from each continent. How are you gonna justify making that 24 teams?

European clubs play enough games already. Total pointless. Stupid cash grab.

Probably true. But the OFC Nations all get to vote for the position of FIFA President, so I’m sure Infantino wants to keep them and all the world’s minnows happy.

Just another FIFA cash grab at the expense of genuine competition.

Exactly the same as the increased world cup size.

going to be interesting, It has been suggested teams will get $50 million for playing at the CWC - under NZ's current set up that would mean the qualifier would get $25 million, NZF $5 million and the other $20 million spread over the 8 franchises (WPX don't get any) - huge game changer but how do you decide the best team over 4 years and will OFC run a Champions League every year - they probably would of they got a cut of the money (which they have already tried to do with the current set up) - not to mention the questions around the imbalance one team getting $25 million would cause and then the whole Phoenix in Aussie because of no professional league etc

ATM The European clubs, players and UEFA seem opposed which will create a massive stumbling block for FIFA. Also the money is coming from a private source, which gives me uneasy memories of ISL.

think there will be a long way to go with this one

I know that many will already be aware of this book, but I highly recommend "How they Stole the Game" by David Yallop.

Many of the topics covered are unbelievably 'dirty' and confirm that the IOC and FIFA operate like international crime organizations

$25 million would work nicely and has the potential to propel the game forward in the region provided certainty was given in regards to the $$$ split and measures are taken to ensure that the benefits do not end up lining the pockets of investors

I would imagine that the OFC would want a cut to be split among it's members, If a New Zealand team wins; NZF would take a slice, the there's league operating costs, the winning club and the other clubs

with the exception of OFC (who have tried to get a cut) that's basically what happens now, it's just the scale will be massively different (ie $1million compared to $25 million)

It all sounds great, but I just can't help thinking of the whole ISL debacle

so Hienghéne Sports for this year? Another OFC champions league to decide 2020 participant. Eastern Suburbs and who else qualify for that. Cant remember how the second slot is allocated. Is it Auckland city for winning the league?

Not sure if this has been reported elsewhere, but seems expanded 24 team CWC, and 4 yearly cycle is locked in to start 2021.

I guess one after that would be 2025.

So

2019 CWC - no NZ team.

2020 CWC - ES & ACFC in with a chance through OFC qualifiers.

2021 CWC - ???? which will be the first expanded CWC with dinerios galore. Lets hope NZF fight for proper 2 legged (home & away) semi finals, from now on. Obviously a NZ team being amongst that big cash grab, would be great for the Handy Prem as a whole, re financial viability.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/05/sports/soccer/gianni-infantino-fifa-president.html

Infantino’s new term will also coincide with a World Cup-style tournament for clubs that will be staged for the first time in 2021, an innovation that was agreed only after a turbulent year during which he clashed over the issue with the head of European soccer, Aleksander Ceferin.

the 'playoff' that is being referred to takes place at the actual tournament, plus we got a whole pile of $$$ for qualifying, so it's not really a playoff is it
