the key issue in relation to the lack of coverage is this:

Sure, NZF is an administrative body to govern the game in NZ and manage the representative teams but thats's a 1990's view of what it is. NZF's purpose is to grow the sport and bring in revenue from sponsors and partners. It's in the entertainment business. Not the admin business.

The key for any business trying to attract sponsors and partners is your appeal to a loyal customer (aka fan base) who don't just follow your results but want to buy the shirts, go to the games and be one of the team so to speak.

NZF seriously needs to redevelop their brand and sense of purpose. As far as brands go there is a heirachy of sorts (base level is recognition of the brand (ie I have heard of the All Whiyes), then understanding of what the brands means (ie the All Whites are our national football team and play games a,b and c - ie people follow results), then engagements and identification  with the brand (fans buy the shirts, want to know the players, go to games to be part of the action etc).

So when you have one of the worst sports team brands in NZ (on the basis that people don't know what you stand for, can't actually go to any of your games let alone know who your players are etc) you aren't going to get any sponsors.

So if Martin understands any of the basic 101 stuff it is simply beyond belief that they aren't using this opportunity on their doorstep (where it relatively won't cost a bean) while the team actually are together and have a story (ie the OFC Cup then the Con Feds)  that in the age of social media and new outlets lacking resource to write their own content that NZF aren't taking the time to cover the training, introduce us to the players through interviews etc so more people can associate and begin to identify with them and care.

The first step is awareness. NZF are barely even doing that to the mainstream. Let alone the hard stuff!

We, on this forum, do identify with the team, the brand. We care. But there are about 100 people on here out of 4 million. Martin needs to get kiwis at least  being aware of the games, players, their personalities etc so they at least build some awareness and through getting results on the field they may start to get some more fans.

It's not rocket science...

Most asthma meds are steroids, so I'd say it's more about performance enhancement than getting high. Although I don't think there's ever been any evidence that inhaled steroids can help sports performance. Maybe high amounts of it in a test might mask actual performance enhancing steroids?

Gentleman there is a lot more to come in this Clayton Lewis saga if you are on ventolin its simple you can easily fill in a therapeutic exemption form all club doctors and physio's no about them it sounds like a cover up by NZ Football. More to come big time

Ventolin etc are steroids so their use by pro atheletes is highly controlled/monitored, I would have thought that the medical staff/NZF and Clayton would have been aware of there fine print here (basically it sux to be an asthmatic like you and I).

...Still, hopefully this opens the door to James, Hicks, Clapham etc... a mid who has at least played at a half decent level before.

Maybe they're playing it safe after the Oly Whites fiasco and its not such a big deal after all but could potentially be a big deal if OFC gets a sniff. Either way sucks to be that guy.

Ventolin is a selective beta two agonist. Not a steroid. Conceivably can be performance enhancing, and it's not unheard of players who are not asthmatic having a couple of puffs of ventolin pregame to help open up there bronchial tree (lungs).

It would have to be someone local I would think. I'm not sure what position Hudson would have him playing to having an exact replacement or not.

Hicks is going very well in the Vic Prem League. Must be on the radar for Ernie (less so) and Hudson (more so with Lewis gone). Watching recent highlights the commentators describe him as the best player on the park and he seems to be scoring for fun.

Never really thought he had a decent run at the Nix and he's too good for ASB Prem.

So was checking when the game was on Sky and what channel, they have put the games on the pop ups which means you can't even buy the Fan Pass to watch the game as it doesn't include the pop up channels. Game is on at 5.50pm Saturday against Fiji, doesn't have the other game between Vanuatu and Solomon Islands after.

Yeah, that's me definitely out of watching it - FanPass has been dead handy before.

The AW's are treated like competitive tiddlywinks by Sky - shunted out to the impossible reaches.

FFS.

I was going to get Fan Pass for this but I guess not now.

Surely the problem of adding pop up channels to Fan Pass is the e sort of thing which could be solved by a competent programmer in a morning or something?

Had this discussion with Balbi on twitter, they could put the match on Sky 3 as that doesn't have live sport (1, 2 and 4 have Rugby, League and Netball). They either need to be putting this stuff on one of those channels or even better including the Pop Up channels in the Fan Pass (at the same price they have it now, not more)

Yeah they're only broadcasting NZ games in the group stage, which leaves out a majority of games. I have Sky because I'm in a flat and it works out cheap dividing it by a few people, but once I have my own place there is no chance in hell I'm getting Sky. It's overpriced and doesn't even have that much in terms of sports.

Do you guys think the 4Kingz will be packed for the game?
I was thinking of heading down there for some food and drinks and bring my 16 month old with me so he can learn to drink and support unsuccessful teams from a young age.

Highly doubt that it'll be packed for the game. But it's a Saturday evening with other sport on, so I imagine it'll be busy.

Checked that, there is F1 show and GP2 race highlights but the actual F1 practise that is live isn't on until 8.45pm and the football has finished by then with its coverage only going to 8pm

not really the point - they always pad live F1 with this kind of buildup - if you were a fan of F1 you wouldn't want this coverage to be on different channels so you had to flick backwards and forwards.

The problem actually lies with fanpass not offering Popups - not what channel it's scheduled on.

That is what I said, but really its our National Team playing qualifying for a chance to go to the World Cup, if Sky did actually care about Football then I would have expected it to be on a channel that people can watch even with Fan Pass but we know not enough watch it and it doesn't bring money in like Rugby or Formula 1 does. They don't appear to want to help Fan Pass be a success is probably the biggest problem. They would rather say "see it doesn't work, people don't use it"
