At the press conference before Thailand's disastrous friendly against
China last week, the mechanics of a non-functioning association were
laid bare for all to see. Not only did the visiting Thais fail to source
a Mandarin-speaking Thai (something incredibly easy to do) but they
also had no one to speak English. Without English-speaking Head Coach
Kiatisuk Senamuang (who swiftly dodged the bullet of senior team chaos)
German team physioAndy
Schillinger was drafted in to field some of the questions, but not
before the temporary assistant of the temporary coach had insulted the
Chinese through a lack of English and poor decision making.
When the local Chinese press asked the coaching staff why many of the
most high profile Thai players had stayed at home disastrously and ham
fistedly, in pigeon English, it was claimed that the hosts had made
errors over visas for the Thai players. As the host representatives
swiftly and angrily pointed out, twenty six visas were prepared and
given to the travelling Thais with plenty of time for them to finalise
their organisation. The fact that three of the players arrived late
because the Thais had failed to show due process was not the Chinese
FA's fault, and to suggest that it was caused huge offence.
Part of the problem was a lack of a strong English speaker, something
unforgivable and wholly avoidable. The possible friction point about the
laughable fifteen man squad (including three goalkeepers) could have
easily been glossed over by a confident communicator as one of the
challenges of drafting younger players for competitions and friendlies
that take place close together. When one of the press asked the Thai
coaching staff which players in the current squad also played in the
shock 5:1 win by the Thais in March, the coach didn't know. Imagine the
ridicule the local press must have privately heaped on a coaching team
who didn't seem to know much about the people in their charge. An
opportunity to show the Chinese how Thai football has become more global
and reach out to a new audience was lost in pantomime fashion.
Someone with a deep knowledge of Thai football like Truesport anchorman
Tangmo Pue-On could easily have fielded the English questions, briefed
the coaching team in Thai and relayed their answers (or finessed
versions that made sense to their audience) with little or no effort. To
expect physio Andy Schillinger to be the official mouthpiece of the
Thai FA purely because he speaks good English simply wasn't fair on him.
With exactly twelve months left before the ten country ASEAN region
opens its doors to business using English as its official language it is
breathtaking that a country whose language is spoken by less than one
percent of the world ignores one widely using the first and third most
spoken languages on the planet (and twenty percent of the world's
population). Arrogance or ignorance?A heady and depressingly familiar mixture of both.

When it comes to complete shambles, they make the YF look like they DO know what they're doing.
I think it's also part of the attraction of Thai football. Seeing all these train wrecks, despite the immense potential.
Wynton and Shane defied Zurich twice in 1985, flying back to play Aus and Israel at home and then Australia away... they were almost banned as a result because they didn't have clearances, insurance etc...
By the next campaign in 1989, Wynton had moved to Werder Bremen... he flew back to NZ in December 1988 during the Bundesliga winter break (at his own cost), and played v Chinese Taipei at Western Springs... the next set of games v Aus and Israel at Mt Smart were right in the middle of the Bundesliga season - but he flew from Germany to Tel Aviv (paying his own fare) to play against Israel simply because he wanted to represent NZ...
At every successful event during his Werder career, he was literally flying a NZ flag... he signed his autograph Kiwi Rufer... when he played his first game for Kaiserslautern, the club had the Mutton Birds play a gig pregame and had NZ theme day for the fans! There is an apocraphyl (sp?) tale that in 1993 he was at the airport, ready to fly back to Auckland to play Australia, when then coach Ian Marshall called him and persuaded him not to as Werder would sanction him heavily... and yet in 1992, he had travelled to England to join an All Whites team playing friendlies against club teams, and even persuaded Werder to tour NZ and play against the All Whites...
He played again in 1996 and a full part in the WCQ campaign in 1997... he even made himself available again during his Indian Summer at the Kingz, but Ken Dugdale rejected it...
I'm no Rufer apologist, these are just facts... it was hellishly frustrating that he didn't play more for NZ, but to question his commitment to the AWs, with the career that he had, is complete bollocks

I interviewed the All Whites coach from the early nineties, Ian Marshall, a few years before he died (over a decade ago), for the "Sitter!" football fanzine and he told me about Wynton having his bags packed and being all ready to fly out to Auckland for the first leg of the Oceania World Cup play-off vs. Australia in May 1993.
Unfortunately the two legs of the play-off coincided with the last two rounds of the Bundesliga season, including Bremen's crucial game vs. Bayern to decide the title, so Marshall told him to stay. Werder won the title by one point from Bayern.
All power lay with the clubs then and they were under no obligation to release players even for World Cup qualifiers.
Another crazy aspect - that the Oceania Confederation had scheduled the play-off to coincide with the height of the European season. This was because the Pacific Island nations who controlled things figured that if an Island nation made the play-off, they'd have more chance against an Australasian side without its European stars.
Regarding the All Whites' 1992 tour of Britain mentioned above, Wynton played in the 1-0 win vs. a strong Celtic side on their own ground:

I still think it was interesting that Moss and Durante were the ones that were stood down. Clearly Moss doesn't believe that he has been "dropped" so maybe I am reading more into it than is there. Moss is a senior player, and the captain in the last match, so to have a camp and two games without him there I still think that's a bit strange if he is your long term locked in no. 1

Really feel for Fenton, shoulders injuries are such a prick to recover from, and at least Doyle seems to be making a good call with an important A-League season ahead of him.
