A member of New Zealand's history-making Under-17 Women's World Cup squad has completed her switch to Germany but her debut has been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Maya Hahn
Can't help but think that this is a very ill-informed decision that will see her never playing full intentional football.
Germany has loads of talented ladies so it will be very very hard for her to make the full national team.
I wonder if Ole has something to do with this given a certain male Judas did the same thing...

I reckon she'll get to play U20 at least and she does have the potential to make it all the way
I think its more to do with her Dad being German that has made her make this decision, she said in an interview that since she was about 10 she has dreamed of playing for Germany

Worked out well for Tyler though?
I think you also need to look at the fact she did it as a statement. Essentially "NZF you are a bunch of clowns, Id rather push with a professional org and risk not making it that having anything more to do with you"

Initially, but it's possible he may have hit a career ceiling. Means he can go to the MLS, which could have been tricky if he'd stayed with NZ maybe (can you be a dual citizen?). With the example of Singh and Thomas (and Marco), if you're good enough you definitely can get the chance from NZ.
Worked out for Winston Reid too!

Not sure I'd agree with that statement. NZF does a pretty good job with the ladies game, unlike the men.

cough cough.....Heraf.....cough cough....
No time for people like her or Boyd. Goodbye
No time for people like her or Boyd. Goodbye
why, they left for a better chance to play international football. Boyd wanted to try for a National team and saw that the NZ mens team was never going to give him the games he wanted so he followed his dream with the US. Maya I guess is similar except that the NZ womens team plays a lot more often than the men.

Pretty sure I read that somewhere that was her reason but I can not remember where.

I'd also say its slightly different as they have both a parent that is from the country they went to represent
Whats the difference between them or Shane Smeltz a German born Australian raised guy playing for New Zealand because one of his parents was a kiwi. Or Rory Fallon who did turn his back on NZ but came back when it was clear he wasn't going to be anywhere near the English senior team?

I'd read that too but think it's just the musings of a adolescent (she is still quite young) not fully aware of things and taking them at face value only.

you've obviously not been following the goings on in NZ Women's football (especially the International level) over the last couple of years!
No time for people like her or Boyd. Goodbye
Why anyone with the option of avoiding NZF would deal with them is beyond me. Hahn and Boyd making the only smart decision available to them and good on them for doing it. I look forward to seeing how high these Kiwi fly.
Maya Hahn _might_win a World Cup one day.
Maggie Jenkins _probably_ won't

I've been following it closely and attending Ferns games in USA and Europe. Yes, under Heraf it was a bit of a joke, but think things are on the up now. Also the ladies don't have the lack of game issue the men have.
I think at a National and Regional level the womens competitions and development structures don't seem equivalent or as progressive as the mens even though our Football Ferns team are ranked at 23rd in the world. And we all know how progressive the mens system is.. There is much more potential in the Womens game to get the early gains due to the slow adoption of other countries. Good on Maya for going to a place where Womens football is treated better. You reap what you sow NZF

The women's game is not even close to equivalent to the men's game in Germany either, but it's a much higher standard of pretty much everything compared to NZ.
I think we're doing fantastically compared to other countries. Of course 23rd in the world is reflective of many countries not giving a damn about half of their population but honestly I've found the average Joe in NZ treats women's football with so much more respect than in many other countries - especially among strong football fans
With the next WWC here I wonder if maybe she’s starting to think she jumped ship too quickly?

I think she's currently back at Ole from social media bits I've seen.

No.

for sure. destined to not play for any senior side
Two good candidates for the Phoenix W league team if it gets off the ground.

well no, as it would be NZF driven in prep for 2023 WC - so they would be NZ eligible players

I get the feeling this is quite personal for Feverish. He doesn't want Wellington kids to keep wanting to come train in Porirua.

That's right. Unless NZF agrees to bankroll the considerable cost of an W League side, no way Nix should feel compelled to make it 100% Kiwis.
If anything it sounds until recently (in Andy Martin's reign) NZF were more of an obstacle getting a W League team up and going.
Side will mostly be based in Australia, and I think Dome/Morrison have said it will contain some Aussies for sure (probably with W League experience). Also they have talked about including some players from the Islands as well.
Will really come down to who wants to play and who's good enough. Unless she finds a pro contract overseas in the meantime (reasonably likely imo), you'd have to assume Hahn is in both those categories.

she's only one year in to university in the US so won't get a pro contract for another couple of years - although I think she will once she's finished there
but given what she said about the difference between NZ and Germany in playing styles I'd expect her to be looking at Europe

NZF have been fully behind a W-League side as long as one's ever been talked about.
The player this thread is about is at a US college on scholarship, which will likely preclude immediate involvement in the Phoenix W-League side, for timing reasons before anything else.
The makeup of the Phoenix W-League team will be very interesting – one big issue is that most of the 'next generation' players you'd want involved are at US colleges.

One thing that's amazed me getting around the grounds over the last month is that so many players do seem to be planning on heading back come August.
Yikes, I would be avoiding the US like, uh, the plague right now.
But I'm not an aspiring pro footballer, so probably not the person to ask!

Is it because they'd be risking their scholarships if they don't go back?

Yes good point.
Hannah Blake and Gabi Rennie are a couple that would have been good to get involved in Nix W league but are at US colleges.

David Dome was on the pod a few months back, and unless I seriously misheard him, he said no NZF had not until more recent times, been that helpful with getting a W League team up and running.
Perhaps related more so to Nix initially aiming to have a women's team in the NWL, as a first step.
Some of NZF's issues sounded like it was around perceived possible undermining of the FFDP, plus various regional federations/existing NWL teams worried that a Nix NWL team would just lead to an exodus of all their best talent to Wellington.
Anyway he did say progress was now being made, to solve these obstacles.

Not if you’re their coach :)

I repeat: NZF have been fully behind a W-League side as long as one's ever been talked about.
Since FFDP was set up post-Rio it's always been hoped a W-League team would come into the frame to cover the other half of the year (the first half being the NZ winter).
Hare-brained ideas about first putting a Nix team in the NWL (Why? Where would the players come from?) are a different matter. That NZF and the federations had no interest in that happening is completely understandable. But this has no relation to a Phoenix W-League side, other than it involves the Phoenix and women's football, and no relation to NZF's support of it.
Anyway, I get the sense a lot of change is coming in the FFDP/NWL space in the near future.
