Hey all,

I've spoken today with Tony O'Brien, Head of Communications with SKY.  Here's the official word on A-League coverage this season.

From mid-August to mid-November
* All Phoenix games live
* At least ONE other game per weekend live
* All other games delayed
* New A-League Review show (ex-Fox Sports in Australia) - 10pm Mondays

From mid-November onwards
* All Phoenix games live
* At least THREE other games per weekend live
* The other game delayed
* New A-League Review show (ex-Fox Sports in Australia) - 10pm Mondays

All playoff games live.

No word on the pre-game or commentary team for Phoenix home games, but I've got it on pretty good authority the changes outlined by Hard News in the other thread are correct.

Cheers,
Piney

I'm not sure how that compares to last year but still looks like we're getting all the games so it gets a thumbs up from me.

Fox A League review show should be interesting.

Most games were live last year, with the odd one being delayed.

I'm not too distraught at the prospect of watching them delayed rather than live.

well everyone else had better watch the other games this year, if the viewer numbers go down again, then its likely it will be even worse next year.
I personally don't watch anyone in the a-league other than the nix. just not my cup of tea.

Thanks for the update, Liverpoolfan 1. Its good to hear something official at last.
Shame they aren't all live, but good that they will be broadcast.
Will make sure every game is recorded if I can't watch it there and then ..got to keep the stats through the set top box as high as possible.

I wonder if Sky can tell if someone records something but then deletes it without watching it?

Was living in aus last year. If its the same Fox a league review (Fox FC i think it was called) I thought it was really good. Miles better than anything we have anyway.

I actually missed the old kiwi-centric "World of Football" take on how the Phoenix were doing last season.
 You can imagine how the Fox revue show is going to be.
Still something extra is better than nothing ...  thanks Sky for that.

Hey - even if you don't watch the games, make sure your decoder is set to the channel showing them.
Sky figures go completely off what channel you are watching - that's how they keep track of viewer numbers. If you go out, make sure the decoder is on the correct channel. They don't know if your tv is on or off.
Better still, 'book' the games so the channel switches at game time. That way they see figures change.

A-league highlights on the highlights channel? Was a good way to see all the round's games/goals in half an hour.

Not really.  Who's to say?  Maybe our emails and the objections on here actually swung opinion a little...

I'm not entirely convinced that a 3:00 AM delayed coverage of a match is the way to grow the following of the league or assist it.  Seems to me a way of justifying a 'no one watches it' campaign for the future.

Even though the production values of Fox FC will probably be on par with the Transformers movies I am not too keen to watch biased Aussie w**kers give comments on the Phoenix.

To be honest, I'm very surprised at the amount of people on this site who say they only watch Nix games and don't particularly care about the rest of the league. How can then we expect casual sporting fans to take an interest in the league> And like HN said, this could well be just a stepping stone to further reducing A-league coverage here. And that's a slippery slope.

Its also a way for Sky to get a few more diehard A-league fans to get MySky HDi.
Its so easy to use compared to recording them in the past.
The delayed games are probably going to be scheduled off peak,  in sleeping hours or working hours when most of us won't see them...cunning baskets!

Oath to that! Gets one right revved up and feeling especially pleased when the Nix upset their smug

How do u knw its going to be delayed at 3.00am u dnt knw that?
I dnt think it wil b at 3.00am since they own the rights it wil b fillers for during the day. plus all games wil be on skysport highlights to be honest thats good enough because most people dnt want to watch a 2 hour long game they just enjoy seeing the goals and highlights. If anything itl probly draw more casual supporters because i know for a fact people dnt want to be bored for two hours watching poor quality a-league football because to be honest thats al it is to most people that don't follow football and to people that do follow football in other countries.

Oh, it's crap football is it? Gee, thanks for letting me know that. Why waste time watching it all? In fact, let's scrap the Phoenix, the A-league, and the myriad other leagues and just watch Real Madrid play Manchester United in the McDonalds Super Fantastic League played at Coca Cola Visa Gillette HSBC PriceWaterhouseCooper Stadium.

Coz, you know, the quality of football will be fantastic.

Well its a well known fact that A-league football is not at the best standard and if you think that is at the highest standard with some of the other leagues in the world you are deluded. I mean god sometimes the Nix struggled to put 10 passes together last season doesn't mean I won't support them because its poor quality. However other people might and you have to realise that. Especially rugby supporters who want to be treated with the highest quality otherwise they think its inferior.

And the best way for the A-league quality to improve and get 'other' fans to take notice is to reduce its TV coverage here?

In a way yes if people just see them scoring freekicks and goals and the "nice" highlights they might be incline to watch the nix more just like the way people that don't stay up for EPL games just see the highlights and all of a sudden have an EPL team.

Dont have one so I cant relate to that feeling..it got well and truly vented/ventilated years ago.

and yes Im looking forward to most football starting again..even debating paying 4 pound per month to view Boroworld for highlights on the web of its games given we are in the non televised league now.

and even further offtopic I wish we had signed Ifill!..although he wil enjoy Welly more..and aussie excursions.

I look forward to the highlightd package...with no sound if needs be.

Me too. That's the one. Good motivation too!

My only disappointment is losing Harry Ngata and his insightful input and having Andrew Dewhurst whom if he teamed up with Fred De Jong, would solve the worlds insomnia problem after only three games..
