Happy to sign Wihongi and Payne.... we would be setting up a team that can play out which I would like.

Bevan's under-20 campaign was two years ago.

Abeid's probably too good for the A-League at his age, plus there's the Newcastle link between him and Taylor, but if there is substance to this story then I'd be absolutely stoked. Great player

Mehdi Abeid was on the bench when Taylor and Newcastle came to play the nix in 2014, so he has already been to Wellington before and has played with Stevie. Good player, would love to sign him

Now I know this gets thrown round a lot here, but he would tear apart this league. Just watched his highlights from seasons gone and he is some player...

Not sure how accurate this website is but says Abeids annual salary is 263,000 Euros roughly 445,000 NZD so maybe if we offer him similarly to Roy it could be possible? and if he is a marquee would help too.

No chance because he's too good and would tear up the A-League? Or because it might happen and you are just using an anti-jinx?

Imagine us splashing the cash on someone like Abeid - who would be one of the bigger/biggest transfer grabs in the A-League (considering age, profile and class), but then realising we couldn't offer enough dosh to entice Krishna to stay...

Mind you I'm loving the optimism on here guys, went from I-spy the other day, which admittedly was pretty fun, to linking us to players through who's following who on Instagram today.

I fudgeen love football!

Of the news from today. Would love to see Payne and TAHW sign on. Houtkoop has a very respectable record behind him at a very good level too so could definitely be worth a shout.

The other guy, Molano, well..... he's from Grapevine TX, so I'm sure at the very least some clever bugger would be able to put a chant together off just that alone.

He would tear up the league so much there would not be a league to play in anymore. Too high risk.

David Ball has been plying his trade at a level that many of the Knights players were at, I'd like to think we can do better then that.

I'd not consider him good enough for Plymouth Argyle and we are in league 2 (again), let alone the Nix.

David Ball missed the boat to Roar and ended up @ the Nix. Another sad day for recruitment.

Can't see any Aussies in the squad for that season, maybe he was just an Aussie fan of the mighty Fleetwood Town. Bit hard to find out if he has an Aussie parent or not.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/114078372/wellington-phoenix-open-door-for-trial-players-as-preseason-training-gets-underway

Stuff can confirm New Zealand internationals Myer Bevan, Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi and Tim Payne reported for training at Martin Luckie Park in Berhampore on Monday as new Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay put six trialists through their paces during the late morning session.

Joining the Kiwi trio were 20-year-old former Brisbane Roar midfielder Joe Caletti and two foreigners who would be considered imports in the A-League; ex-Dutch Eredivisie player Xander Houtkoop, a 30-year-old winger from the Netherlands, and American midfielder Alex Molano, a 27-year-old whose professional career has been spent predominantly in the United States' second-tier USL Championship.

Bevan would not pass the no COCKS policy according to most at western springs. Payne is def worth a shot now his ego has let him trial. Te Atawhai is far more a DM than CB.

Interesting they would try a 30 yr old from the Netherlands compared with Browne from ACFC who spent 3 years with top teams there or Le Alafa both of their instat form is up with Mc Cowat with less games in the ISPS. I recall Domey saying Instat was one of the metrics they use for players

Brown played 2 seasons in the 4th tier. And one season in an u21 competition.

Bit of a stretch to call PEC Zwolle and Groningen top clubs (seeing as he wasn't really with their top teams, just to be precise in the use of language), I mean they're not Ajax or PSV, or anything near that. Solid Eredivisie clubs of late, yes, but not much more than that.

Either way you look at it, the original post gilded the lily a bit too much.

Young Aussie CB - guess that means Pijnaker stays in Sweden?

Not unhappy with the signing, would rather target youth than journeymen (of the many clubs kind) if we're gonna sign Australians.

Whats the story/rules with contracted players playing for the Weenix. Most of these young guys are obviously not starters. How many of these young guys are going to be able to get regular game time in the Handy playing for the Weenix.

I understand 3 players from the nix team are allowed to play there. Is there also an age cut off that allows more than the 3 to play there weekly?

worrying about the mix here. Youth carrying a team is never a good idea- we came to rely on younger players, but didn't start that way last year.

Hopefully we'll see balance soon or better I'm just wrong and the young team is great.

There were some rumours about Pijnaker signing up but he has been playing recently for Declan's team in Sweden.

My understand is for the past couple of seasons they've been able to play as many under-20s (so born 1999 or after) as they want, a goalkeeper, and two over-20 (born 1998 or earlier) pros.

Indeed. There is a big difference between being at a Eredivisie club for three years but never being near the first team, and playing 80 games in the Eredivise and another 150 odd in the second tier.

Still got Taylor, Marinovic, DeVere, Davila and Fenton (over 100 appearances and 26 years old, before someone takes issue with including him) +3 imports who are all likely to be experienced players. Not an overly worrying ratio for me.

I don't mind the youth mix, if the club spends all the money on the starting 11/imports and then fills the bench + reserves with cheap youth with potential its not a bad financial plan. The youth will fight like hell to get on the bench every week. Excited to see the remaining starting and import spots filled.

Its a good identity for  the club to have, development pathway with lots of young NZers.

Only a good identity if we play decent football and win some games, though - the danger is turning into CCM; losing constantly, crowds not showing up and in turn no good young players wanting to sign for us because of it.
