From 442's Rumour Mill

Wellington Phoenix did have the chance to sign Perth midfielder Leo Bertos. However Herbert failed to match the $80000 salary demanded by the player. The best offer Bertos recieved from Herbert was $55,000.

I thought it was weird that the Perth coach seemed resigned to losing him but then they didnt.

The best offer Bertos recieved from Herbert was $55,000??

With nearly 10 assists a season he could easily get around $100,000.  Anyway I don't believe this.

Yeah - if this is true - and I'm not saying it definately is as anyone could have posted this on the rumour mill - but if it is it's very surprising - I would have thought one of the top 3 players in "assists" in the league last year would have been worth 80k per year.

Pardon my suspicion, but why would Perth be offering him a new deal anyway when he already had a two year contract... sounds questionable to me.

Of course it's bollocks - Bertos is an easy $75-$90kpa player in this league

I dont know Perth signed him from Wokshop town in england. he was little more than a conference player then. So wouldnt he be on average money.

I think it's probably a bit more complicated than this as Phoenix FC would have also had to buy out the final year of his contract.

If its true then $55K is a disgrace. Surely he's earning at least that already?

I suspect it has more to do with how much Perth wanted from us to buy his contract though (like KB said).

Bertos is easily worth 75K, dont know why people think otherwise.
