Does he often come back to get the ball? I hope we'll have enough penetration when Ball's deep.

Based on his experience playing as a 10 recently. I really don't think Ufuk has signed him with the intention of trying to use him as a traditional striker. I've got a feeling we're gonna try play like Liverpool and have the wingers as the players who get the bulk of our goals, with Ball linking the play together and holding the ball up.

The 'rapa game will be a good indication of how we will set up. I've been assuming we will be a 4-3-3 but who knows, Talay hasn't really said much about formations.

He said in the Ball press conference that he likes to play with a "second striker". That to me indicates he wants to play two up front, but have one striker stay on the shoulder of the defensive line and make runs in behind, while ball as a second striker drops deeper to get the ball and give Davila and co another option to play it to when trying to move the ball forward. That's just my understanding anyway

Doubt that Rapa game will be a good indication of anything, they've been abysmal in the Central League this season so it's hardly likely to be a decent pre-season hit out. Suspect the game is more about engaging fans in the Wairarapa catchment.

I think it's believable, as long as you put 'pre-season' and 'training' in inverted commas.

There were plenty of instagram photos of him doing lots of fitness training in Dubai.

Hasn't Bally been terrific, consistent, hard working, good vision and now the goals are rolling in too. He's up for A League player of the month. Vote him in!

done. Much like the rest of the team, have thoroughly enjoyed watching him. His work rate is second to none and the trickery a joy to watch. Chuffed for him that he’s started to get a few goals to his name.

He's not had a good season. Hopefully just a blip rather than a tailing off of his career.

Agreed, output wise it wasnt his best, but I'd be confident to suggest if we looked at the number of times he was involved in a scoring play his numbers would be higher, pretty sure he was often involved in a pass before an asisst occurred on a number of occassions. Stats like these are all good as a measure of success but his work off the ball and in defence was massive this season.

Reposting this in here from the Barbarouses thread because DB deserves some love recently -

Getting a bit off topic I know, but I've been on a stats binge all day. You're spot on about his impact. I feel like in other leagues assists stats are talked about way more than here, but they're just as important as scoring. Across his time with us, David Ball has 33 direct goal involvements in the league (18 assists, 15 goals). Only Ifill (20) and Bertos (19) have more assists ever for the club, and David is also in 3rd for most direct goal involvements behind Krishna (62) and Ifill (53). Regardless of what happens going forwards, David Ball is a certified Nix legend.

I just mentioned elsewhere we’ve got a long way to go in the season. While it’s kinda scary, it is also plenty of blank canvas for Bally to nab a few goals too! Fingers crossed.

His last goal was 2nd January last year, it was the first time he scored & we had lost. Hopefully he rediscover his scoring form soon.

Only would take him for more years on his current contract if he became a local player and on reduced salary.

From the research in the other thread is number 2 behind Krishna on the Nix all time assist chart, by the transfermarkt definition.

Sorry, but this is where a league-winning team needs to be ruthless. We can't afford to have any passengers in the squad; visa player or otherwise. He hasn't scored in an age, his body has well-publicized issues, and he doesn't have the legs to warrant a spot outright.

David Ball is the perfect example of a heart-and-soul player who will run himself into the ground for the team, but I believe that he can't keep up the standard this league demands. He's got a year on his contract, and I'd be surprised to see him get significant minutes next season.

I'd be especially surprised to see him offered any kind of contract beyond that, unless it's as backroom staff.

Uffie’s first 3 seasons he was consistently around 10 goal contributions a season. Roughly at one every 200 minutes. There’s also 3 assists in the FFA cup in his first two seasons.

Uffie’s last season was confused on attack- we had too many players who couldn’t quite play together. That saw only 4 goal contributions at one every 425 minutes.

So far this season he’s had fewer minutes and has 3 goal contributions again at around 430 minutes each.

I’m not sure when he is eligible as a local, but I think he’s 34 now. I think it’d only be year by year for any further contracts surely.

He’s a very adaptable player and has great feet and great vision. I guess he’d be looking to understudy Kraev and/or Old depending on if they stay.

If budgets are further cut next season, as Chief has been hinting at, then I don't mind keeping Ball on a 1+1 sort of deal (contingent on playing time and fitness and maybe a transition to an off field role) if he's at a good price. Great team man and works very hard for the club.

It's unlikely we'd use all 5 import slots. If we're tight on import slots then I'd change my mind.

I think you'll notice that he has been used by Cheify in a totally different role to what Uffie did, he's more of a creator in the offense, he's involved in the buildup play and often gets the assist, so he's playing more of a attacking midfield role - allowing Zawada/Kosta/Kraev to be the goal scorers. There is no way we will cut Ball. Remember the man played the end of last season on one foot - he deserves way more respect!!!

Have we been able to work out when he can become a Kiwi?

I think the Woolongong years will have put paid to any of that. This is as the NZ govt website defines the eligibility for citizenship based on residence:

"You need to have been physically present in New Zealand, as a resident, for a certain amount of time during the last 5 years. The 5 years are counted backwards from the day you apply for citizenship.

To meet this requirement, you need to have been in New Zealand for:

  • at least 240 days in each 12-month period, and
  • 1,350 days across the 5 years.
You might not meet this requirement if you have been out of New Zealand for longer than 4 months in any 12-month period. This could be 1 long trip or many smaller trips.

You also might not meet this requirement if you were overseas for more than 15 months in total in the 5 years before you apply for citizenship."

The Nix were based in Aus for July-August 2020, then Jan 2021-May 2021, then Nov 2021-April 2022 and have been back here ever since. By my count that's 13 months in a 3-year period with two separate stints of more than four months. Unless he gets an exception I doubt he's eligible.
