ADVERTISING guru John Singleton has been approached by the Central Coast Mariners players to take over the club, as the financial crisis surrounding the club worsens.

Singleton has told the players he will do "whatever it takes" to secure the club's future, and will hold talks with owner Peter Turnbull about taking control of last season's grand finalists.

The Daily Telegraph has learned that the Mariners owe a tax bill of more than $1.5 million, and until last month were a year behind on their superannuation payments.

With some $200,000 owed on the super accounts, the PFA was forced to intercede on the players' behalf, and negotiated a payment schedule including interest. Although the first instalment was made in August, there is concern among some of the players that they will not be paid their wages this week.

Turnbull bought a controlling stake in the Mariners in 2007 and has ploughed millions into the club and to the related academy development at Tuggerah.

But a number of sources have confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that the club is in desperate financial straits, with some local businesses waiting months for bills to be settled.

CEO John McKay, who has been with the club since 2005, resigned on Friday in frustration at the club's mounting problems, and a source very close to the playing group contacted The Daily Telegraph last week to express their fear that the club could not exist in its current form for much longer: "The players and their families are very stressed. They have children in schools and mortgages to pay, and they keep being fobbed off with excuses," the source said.

"(Coach) Graham Arnold has done an amazing job shielding the players from all this and keeping their concentration on the football, but they're not stupid. That's why they spoke to 'Singo'."

FFA sources say they would be comfortable with Singleton taking control of the Mariners, but in truth it would get the governing body out of a hugely difficult position.

A-League head Lyall Gorman was executive chairman of the Mariners from its inception until August last year - and as The Daily Telegraph revealed in July - retains a substantial shareholding in Central Coast Mariners Developments Ltd, the company that owns 65 per cent of the Mariners, and the multi-million-dollar Tuggerah development. In addition the FFA itself retains a 5 per cent shareholding in the Mariners.

Singleton is an avowed rugby league fan but is equally immersed in the community of the Central Coast, and regards the Mariners as an essential part of that. Since the club was founded he has put in more than a million dollars.

FFA sources say Singleton would not want to hold the franchise for the long term but would do so until a new backer could be found.

Isn't it the case that the Nix (as opposed to Terry's wider business) have been paying the bills on time? Apart from the IRD, of course. And the ACC. And some players' wages. And Ricki's wages. Er, never mind.

We have problems there is no doubt... but this is the first season a coach has been allowed to spend the full cap amount...

In light of the above article Peter Turnbull released a statement today and is planning meetings hold forums with fans to keep everyone up to date... it reads well and says I think that Singo if he wants in needs to pay more...

The Mariners in the COE hold considerable non cash assets... further and unlike the Nix the ownership group is not going belly up..

There is no doubt a problem but our squad and support coaching personal is the biggest it's ever been... meaning I guess that things are afoot ... well I hope so and base my argument on what we spending compared to previous years...

To the statement ...

Chairman's Message Tuesday, 13 September 2011 Dear Mariners fans,

The pre-season preparation continued on the weekend with another win for our team playing dynamic football as always under the expert mentoring of Graham Arnold.

After the heart-breaking loss in Brisbane at the end of last season, it would have been easy for all of us at the club to feel disheartened. But the signs on the pitch suggest were ready to challenge for the A-League title again this year. Im as excited as ever with only a month to go till the A-League starts. I know all of you are too. Already a considerable boost in membership numbers and glowing feedback from the Mariners community work confirm this. I thank all of you for investing in the club.

Unfortunately, there are rumours circulating around the Coast and the broader Australian football community, regarding apparent financial issues. After reading yesterdays article, I felt the immediate need to write this open letter to all of you to clarify where we - the Mariners - are heading.

Every A-League club has financial issues. So does almost every football club around the world. Football is not an immediately profitable business. It is a constant balancing act, one where we are carefully managing competing financial requirements. Thats the reality that all of us in the football family are faced with. But the Mariners are no worse off than any other club. In fact, quite the opposite. We have set the national benchmark in laying community foundations. We have stayed true to our ethos throughout our history and continue to sensibly build the club towards sustainable growth.

Let me assure you, our current position is similar to that of most sporting bodies. We spend a lot of money supporting our core product of entertaining football and community integration. We work tirelessly to support that with commercial revenue streams.

On the football side, we currently have the most depth we have ever had. The feedback from supporters and football critics suggest the on field output last season continues to be the best weve seen at the Mariners. And of course in terms of long-term security we have already started work on the Centre of Excellence. This is a project that will make us the first club to be backed by a sound development, a hub of football vision and dreams for the Central Coast.

As a club investor, I acknowledge there are financial considerations to make but, we have a bright future and what I can state is there is no doubt that the Mariners are staying in for the long haul.

The A-League as a whole is always looking for investors! Indeed, I invested into the club four years ago, and then Mike Charlesworth invested last year. When the League is in its formative years, we need fresh capital on a regular basis. We want people to buy into this club to assist in delivering the vision that we all want.

They include people equally as excited about our vision, people who believe in the club, the region we represent and the sport of football in general - in a nutshell, folk who believe in the Mariners.

I hope to meet those of you who are interested face-to-face at another Fans Forum in the coming months (details to come). Meanwhile, I urge you all to keep living the Mariners dream - together!

CMON THE YELLOW AND NAVY!

Thanks for reading,

Peter Turnbull

THE Tax Office is pursuing the former federal Labor MP Belinda Neal for a $1.4 million debt.

The debt has nothing to do with Ms Neal's personal finances. Instead, the Deputy Commissioner of Taxation has singled out Ms Neal to sue personally over a tax debt owed by the Central Coast Mariners Football Club.

For six years Ms Neal was a director of the Mariners, this year's A-league minor premiers, until her resignation in November.

In choosing to pursue Ms Neal, the Tax Office ignored her five male co-directors at the time.

This has forced Ms Neal to start her own legal action, cross-suing the Mariners along with the club's chairman, Peter Turnbull; the England-based property developer and co-owner Kevin McCabe; its part-owner Michael Charlesworth; its director and the mayor of Wyong, Bob Graham; and the former director Lyall Gorman, who is the executive chairman of the A-League.

Hmmm tax issues for CCM, that sounds very similar to the start of our problems under Terry.

CENTRAL Coast Mariners could be decimated in the January transfer window, with the potential departure of up to six players.

While interest in Tom Rogic (Celtic) and Matt Ryan (Randers, Denmark) is known, the Mariners were yesterday stunned to have received an offer - believed to be more than $350,000 - for striker Bernie Ibini from Belgium's Club Brugge.

And cashed-up Asian clubs are eyeing off top scorer Daniel McBreen, veteran John Hutchinson and crafty midfielder Oliver Bozanic.

It's not Graham Arnold's choice. It's basically CCM's strategy for financial sustainability - develop players and sell them on.

If the Phoenix FSE works out it's basically what we will end up doing. Bringing young players on for a year or two, flicking them on to other clubs for modest amounts, then bringing the next lot through.

McBreen and Hutch are hardly young though... I think they are even more in the red than they have been in the past, so have to sell more than just their youth to stay alive. It's a shame really, because they will never win the A-League with this model.

Yes, I know it is the only thing keeping the club afloat. The Russians are not coming to save them.

Every year their momentum seems to be killed by having to sell players. They have the best ever record in the A-League, but no Toilet Seat to show for it. Until they win that, other teams fans will always bring up their chokers tag.

Definitely the Arsenal of the A-League in many respects. Always the bridesmaid, and forever selling off their best players to other clubs for the sake of financial stability. Not saying that financial stability isn't a good thing, but can see how it might be frustrating for fans.

Think the Scottish links come thru McKinna's role as director of football. But he would be foolish to not talk to Wee Mac about his experiences there, as he could end up in a similar position struggling to break into the team despite being a promising talent.

CENTRAL Coast Mariners fans believe they may have solutions to boosting memberships and game day attendances for the defending Premiers.

Despite being on track for back-to-back league titles, crowds at Bluetongue Stadium struggle to crack 10,000 on a regular basis.

CENTRAL Coast Mariners regret to inform Members, fans and media that attacker Adam Kwasnik (pictured above left) will miss the remainder of the current Hyundai A-League season with a knee injury.

Kwasnik will undergo surgery on Monday before beginning his rehabilitation under the guidance of the Mariners medical department.

Kwasnik, 29, sustained the injury last week and subsequently underwent an MRI scan. The result of this imaging combined with additional consultation with knee specialists has determined surgery is necessary to manage the injury.
