AN injection of more than $5 million will today give the Mariners a life-saving infusion, allowing the players to be paid their wages at last and wiping the club's debts clear.

Telecoms millionaire Mike Charlesworth, who became a director three years ago, on Thursday night agreed a deal to pump the new money into the club and become the majority owner in the process.

It's believed Charlesworth has pledged to clear the club's multi-million-dollar debt to the Australian Tax Office over unpaid tax and super, and will immediately pay the salaries of staff and players due last Friday.

Having initially denied taking the drug, Hearfield later admitted to it and had his A-League contract terminated two months ago. He is no longer listed as a squad player on the club's website.

Well he did show he had white line fever on occasions. He did also have a bit of a nose for goal when he needed to. Wonder if he was taking tips from Robbie Fowler?

I can't go along with that. As stated, only 1 other player in the A League has been banned and that was for taking alopecia medication so he would be the first for recreational drugs. There was rumours around Caceres when he was here but if it was that easy, more would be falling out of the woodwork.

According to a ccm expert, the Mariners asked them to edit out all footage of him from the show. He's in the background of some shots, but never in the foreground.

Not saying he shouldn't cop the consequences but the fact is that he's going to regret this for the rest of his life - a lot of people have hit stages of their life where they screw up like this, but they usually don't have their career completely ruined because of it and can recover. For him, it's a very, very long way back.

So you are saying that people that get involved in drugs don't get their careers ruined? Where is this country you speak of because that's not the case in any country I know of

The likelihood of getting caught and publically shamed is far greater in the sporting arena, I would think. I know people who have struggled with drug use but have been offered support and rehabilition to get through it and have returned to working life as normal. Will this happen with Troy? Who knows.

Perhaps but he is also a professional athlete. It really is stupid knowing that he is most likely going to get drug tested. Regardless if you play Russian roulette with a loaded shotgun or loaded air rifle, if you pull the trigger, you know what can happen.

Yeah pretty much. I imagine the drug testing isnt very thorough, he probably thought he'd be able to get it out of his system in time. That thing in the news a couple of months or so ago about drugs in australian sport suggested the testing had been pretty relaxed for a while now over there. Some of those league and afl players are definitely juicing

Most of the drug testing these days is pretty straightforward to do and you no longer need complicated lab tests and that includes Synthetic Cannabiniods such as K2.

Sobercheck and ESR both do tests for around $20 each and all that is needed is someone to supervise you peeing in a pottle. Sobercheck gives results in around 5-10 mins, ESR you have to send away for, but they usually come back within a week.

Each drug takes different times to exit the body, but nobody can really plan it faultlessly really.

Yes so he's been pretty foolish, but then young people do so extremely foolish things and it's a shame it's effected his current employment and possible future job prospects also. Sad news Troy.

Nah 5 years is a bit too much. We dont even know what he did or to what extent, i dont think its in anyones best interests to sit him out for that long. For all we know its a 80 hours community service type deal. Im sure if it were that serious we wouldve heard of police involvement or something

5 years would be absurd. That's the maximum penalty according to that NZ Herald article above, which makes much more sense.

I always think that up to 25 males are complete morons, that's why for years countries fought wars to thin them out a bit and keep in check their mischief. From 25 you start to get a little more sensible but not much. Also being over 40 - if you listen to a 25 year old talk it's bollocks, apart from Patrick maybe.

I also wonder though with the demise of apprenticeships that young men have lost a fair amount of mentorship from their elders. Obviously the wealthy could get away with what they want and the middle classes went into the army, clergy or the civil service all having strong established heirachy, the poor followed their fathers and uncles into work, which kept them on the straight and narrow.

You should expect leadership in sports teams, but young fit blokes, with too much time on their hands and too much wealth are going to get in trouble unless you have a leader like SAF ready to give them the hairdryer treatment.

Absolute joke.  This is a matter for him and his employer - 5 year ban for a couple of bingers?  Are people serious about this?  He may have screwed up at the Mariners but what does this have to do with anyone else - imagine if you were banned from being employed in your job for 5 years.  What is he supposed to do?

He is a professional athlete and because of society he is supposed to be a role model, he knew this when he signed up for doing very little work or stress compared with what most of us face on a friggin daily basis.

I maintain that young men, through a mix of hormones, energy, etc are ill-equipped to deal with life without some form of guidance.

so you are a bit of a knob for posting that, but that's ok , we are all knobs.

Last night they made last 16 of ACL and last week Charlesworth sacked CEO John McKay who has been in that role since 2004. Planning fan forums but it's not football heartland, and there simply isn't the critical mass.

Can they forge a plan for viability?
