Ben Buckley announced plans to start a knockout cup, with the winner possibly having direct entry into the ACL.

For me this raises a couple of questions:

1. Will the 'nix be invited to the competition, given they haven't been invited to W or youth leagues?
2. What happens if Parramatta or MacArthur (as it will include Australian Semi Pro clubs) win? Highly unlikely, I know, but never impossible.

Should include the Phoenix but winner shouldn't get entry into ACL.

I'm going to be so bold as to suggest a few NZFC teams compete as well.

The Phoenix should be allowed to enter because they are an FFA registered team (admittedly through an NZF sub-license).

NZFC teams shouldn't though, its an FFA competiton.

The NZFC's pretty dreadful. They need all the exposure they can get.

would love for some NZFC sides to get in the first round against some state sides but to be honest I'd rather we just take a spot in the cup and not go asking for too much from the FFA

Hopefully that will all change when the nix get the license by themselves in 2011

I could see us being excluded.Travel costs will be too much for say, a state league team from Perth to Welly.

excluded??? I'm sure TP and TS would have a few words to say about that!

its not really that much to travel from Perth to welly, you'd probably find it costs more to get to sydney or adelaide from perth.

Isn't it an AFC rule that no more than 25% of teams in any league can be part of the ACL? So the A-League would have to add another two teams?

We should be involved. We'd come in during the 4th round or round of 16 with the rest of the A-League clubs.

If the idea is farfetched, the so-called pre-season cup can be set up in a knock-out format even.

They should have this F.A cup thing. Then the nix can get the double

Well there is four things you can win in the A-league so I hope they would be going for all 4.

regarding the state league's coming to new zealand problem, isn't in the FA cup the first two rounds are between only league one and two teams and then the top league teams are introduced?

This would mean that only a small number of state teams would have to make the trip, plus gate sale shares would be good for small clubs

Yeah it would work well esp if based on the England model.  Teams such as South Melbourne, Calton, Marconi, Northern Spirit, Newcastle Knights, Wollogong Wolves, Sydney City & Parramata Power to regain some of their glory of old.

Was actually going to post suggesting a cup competition - this would be great I think. The more competitive games, the better IMO. Hopefully it starts this year.

Keep the Pre-season,

then just combine this with the League so the season is even longer. Also ditch the knockouts at the end of the league.

Easy

Yeah but how many of those average Aussie punters are full time supporters of an A-League club?

The average NZFC teams can't afford the regular season, let alone risk an away draw to Oz. This would be restricted to Waitakere and Auckland, but can't see it since we're in good old Oceania

I was present at the demise of Northern Spirit, when it dissolved into the much sillier Gladesville Spirit.  Marconi definitely still exists, so do Paramatta, although not as the Power.  Sydney City's still there, at least in spirit, ditto the Gong.

Much like here, you can take away your Auckland City and your Waitakere United but the clubs underneath are still there...

It seems all of the first round games are at community stadiums. I'm all for spreading the game around but why play Newcastle vs Perth at some ground called Wanderers oval when that is in Newcastle already? It almost seems like the FFA (or whoever) are trying to keep the competition small.

Spreading the love to begin with, so the competition is accepted etc I guess.

Sure but it's Newcastle vs perth and the game is playing at a stadium in Newcastle with capacity of 1000. It;s actually the stadium where Broadmeadow are playing the Strikers right now. A cup is better than no cup but I think the competition could have been done better.

Anyway, I'm enjoying the action tonight.

Excellent effort from South Springvale given they don't play in NPL Victoria. There was a crowd of over 2,000 in Brisbane and it seems like there was at least 1,000 every where else.

Its a shame we don't have home games, or even TV coverage. Makes it hard to get into. I'd say I have minimal interest at this stage.

You have internet, you have coverage. I watched from my hospital bed on a laptop using mobile broadband.

It was great!

And how much did that cost to watch? $50?

The games are played at the home grounds of the clubs so they can make money from it ... so if say Olympic play SFC they will play at Olympic's ground and Olympic keep all the gate money...
