Auckland football... what's going on, a few years ago it was Lynn Avon, then Bay Olympic, now apparently Glenfield? How much money can be going around which makes it worth leaving?

Melville should be competitive in Division 1, I reckon they have enough a team and a good enough coach to recruit high-quality players.

Pretty sure I saw Springs had announced Emblen as their coach?

Yep I heard  emblen was going also...

Looks like glenfeild are trying to do what f.hill did a few years ago it will end in tears.....

Look at f.hill now...

Lots of good young players in Hamilton to make Melville and ham wand very competetive.

What's the Glenfield youth system like ? Don't they believe in promoting young players, or isn't there the quality at the moment ?

They have nothing in the youth, usuall story spend large on 1st team don't spend time or  money on youth...

Short term fix...

Good to see a thread for this league for 2013.

Half of Taka going to Glenfield along with coach Donnegan. Taka only 4th (around there) last year so that in itself wont make Glenfield a force you'd think. Plenty of rumours on NRFL forum of players they've signed, will be interesting to see who is in the line up come pre-season.

As far as Div2 goes I can see Tauranga being quite tough this year with McNab and maybe Pamment going across from Matamata. Mata I think will struggle without those 2 players especially and if ex coach takes some more with him to Tauranga.

What I saw of Lynn Avon last year would make me think they will be top half at least, if they retain their better players. Not the worst team to be relegated, they just seemed to lack consistency it seemed.

Emblen confirmed as Springs player/coach. WIll be interesting to see what players he can attract. Him as a player is a good coup for them, still will be able to run the show from CB in this league you would think. Played him pre-season last year and looked fit and strong for his age. Certainly older players than him in the league already.

I've heard that Albany are losing a heap of players, couple of their defenders I spoke to are going and rumours of more leaving. They might struggle. From what I saw last year they would be wise to keep hold of their keeper, he looked quality in the games I saw.

Coast and Shore I think will need to make some signings in the off season if they want to compete in Div1, both I think especially will need to look for keepers, IMO.

Pre-season trainings starting now/soon for alot of clubs so would be good to hear some more rumours, innuendo or just blatant lies and untruths!

Jack McNab is a VERY good player, scores goals for fun, you are right in saying that Matamata will miss him. Perhaps he's taken up a job in Tauranga, not like they'll be getting paid!

Agree, quality player. I spoke to him at the Labour weekend Tauranga tourny (after he'd put 4 past us in the semi!) and sounded like he'd had enough of doing it tough for Mata. Can't really blame him too much, Mata seemed like a good bunch of guys but weren't exactly giving him much in the way of service up front.

Wanderers should be about the same as last year at this stage, will be interested to see what Melville are like. Rumours are Steve in England to get upto 4 players. Heard Glenfield had gone nuts on signing players, maybe Mayney could send a couple our way :)

Birkenhead have lost A few to Perth and Melbourne state league( salter and linderboom)... They will miss salter....

Not sure who they have signed yet...

Hearing f,hill have lst a few of there better players to bays I think.

Waitakere have been busy , but glenfield have signed heaps ( few from bay Olympic)..

North shore and  hib coast should do ok..

so i hear that Kevin Hagan has jumped from Glenfield to Taka - so that means that Glenfield and Taka are swapping over again (after having done it a few seasons back).  For me those two clubs are a mockery at that level, little to no investment in reserves or U19's - just get the chq book out each season.  Can't blame the players or the coaches, if someone is offering that kind of thing.

Predictions for promotion/relegation for each of the leagues?

Div 2

Tauranga and Springs to go up

Matamata and Manukau to battle it out for last

Div 1

Melville and Suburbs to bounce straight back up

Metro and Map to go down

Premier League

Hard to pick a winner - Maybe East Coast Bays? - big gap in ability between the top 5 and the bottom 5 (see below)

Two of Manurewa, Onehunga Sports, Wanderers, Three Kings and Ellerslie to go down

What does everyone else think?

Most of last season t.k.u team playing at waitak utd so they will be unavailable for half a season due to O league

Think that glenfeild have only taken who they needed from takapuna, takapuna will struggle big time

Glenfield. Should do a Birkenhead only thing is 10 x there budget

Would imagin Neil will attract players to springs so they should do well

Heard waitakere city are splashing a few dollars about also with Colin in charge...

Hearing Birkenhead will be strong also bays....

Anybody know of any Pre season games?

i personally don't think Glenfield will be strong enough - they might have a crack at it but i think they will end up tailing off like last season.

Money doesn't always buy you success.

Yep that's what i heard about Kings - new coach new playing staff - heard DJ might be heading to play Fencibles with his mates he used to play first team with at Suburbs - not sure that will benefit Fencies in the long term.

Yeah i expect Waitakere to be much more competitive than last year.

Anyone know with the change in the timing for the O-League how that's likely to effect United and City and their premier league "sister" clubs?

Yep expecting Birko to be strong - would have had them for the title but think that with a few of their players doing the Waikato thing they may have a slightly disrupted pre-season?

Birkenhead have always looked light in the middle. I never saw them in 2012 so that may have changed.

DJ is one of the best footballers in Auckland not playing ASB. Lovely balanced footballer and one of my favourites. Dave Richmond is another.

So isn't that going to mean that Central and Waitakere are going to have to operate almost totally without any O-League registered players for Auckland City or Waitakere?  (assuming they take the spots of course).
Also can anyone confirm if the O-league is finished by the time the transfer window closes, if that's not the case then those O-league players won't be able to come back and play for the NRFL clubs right?

yeah i don't think they would - but i'm sure NRFL clubs (particularly Waitakere City and Central Utd) would like them to.

Sorry just on DJ - i didn't mean to imply he wasn't a good player - i was trying to say that the suburbs guys going on masse to Fencibles probably wasn't a good thing - DJ is a good player, i had the pleasure of watching him break into first team footy at Ellerslie before he moved to Suburbs.

It seems to make sense as usually waitakere city are poor till the national league players come back but this time there being pretty active in getting quality players who arnt playing national league.. Central also have signed a few I believe but central always have a good crop of youth players to step in....

I'm sure central and waitak city will find some loop hole to get players

I look at him and see a balanced footballer that can play off both feet, receives the ball with the right body shape open to his team mates and usually knowing where the next pass is. He isn't a physical player but not a softie either. I would be intrigued as to why he never really played summer league. He has an infinite amount more football skill and nous than Adam McGeorge and Alex Feneridis. Say, how is McGeorge going in Wellington... can't hide in the ACFC scheme now can he.

not 100% percent sure but i think he has a knock at the moment, saw him at 7's pre-Christmas and he was struggling with something.

on DJ - Yep i would say he has the ability and engine to fill a box to box role without quite having the technical ability to be a creative midfielder.  Your right though surprised he hadn't picked up a national league gig before now.

Did you notice what sort of talent has Emblem has assembled for his new club, W Springs? Anyone of note? Apart from himself?

Watched the game also, thought western springs did well really battled hard... Not sure who there players were I'm sure there will be players coming in with the coaches contacts. Birkenhead were a bit disappointing they had a strongish team out there, but apparently 8 missing!   Was a great crowd lots of youngsters there.

Couldn't tell you any names but overall thought they gave a good account of themselves.
