21 game season?

Good to have Selwyn and Waimak in the top flight

Now for their Men's teams!

Yes great to have Waimak in there, I wouldn't be100% sure there'll be 8 teams next year, Western & Selwyn were playing the last few weeks of the season with bare 11's. Pretty hard to sustain doing that in WPL so some off-season recruiting will be needed.

With western having 2 womens teams playing on Sunday I'd hope. they will have no problem fielding a premier team next year. And I,m sure Selwyn won't let there deserved ticket in the top div go after one year .

On a different note wouldnt it be great to have a "club of origin" tournament.. In the womens Waimak/North Canterbury would be extremely strong .

Western actually have 3 teams on a Sunday, one of which is a class above anyone else

Can this Western Sunday team that is a "class above" beat their WPL team? Can they play on Saturdays? With Waimak in WPL, will some of their ex players return? Who is the Waimak coach?

The Mainland rules allow them to play on both days so they could if they wanted. Whether they would want to I don't know, and having not seen the Western WPL team I wouldn't know the likely outcome of a match up.

Having seen the Sunday team though they are definitely a class above all the other Sunday teams. There are a couple of teams that are also up at that level and then there are 2 definite divides in quality of the rest

Well, FC20, Western and Selwyn won 4 games between them all season, so you'd expect the majority of the team to come from the 4 remaining clubs - UC, Cashmere Woolston Technical, Coastal and Parklands; 3 of which have their home grounds on the eastern side of town.

stats don't reflect individual playing ability. but if they do then uni should have more players in there .

The likelihood of Coastal not having a high number of selections  is surely very low.

When I look at the Dragons side the expectation is CTFC  should also have a strong %

Given the two clubs strengths (historical and relative)  nothing else would seem odd.

I am less sure on this. Both Waimak and Selwyn have excellent long term programs and with both having WPL sides 2016 then player retention should become less of an issue.

Julian Firth has been putting in some excellent work with FC2011 as well so if those players can 'follow through' then the competition itself will strengthen.

Scottie Rd, are you thinking the Nomads team who were demoted to DIV 2 after the first half of the season will be capable of this? Besides that issue, are there any criteria for gaining entry to WPL? In recent years Parklands, Selwyn and now Waimak have had teams that couldn't win PDL gain promotion to the top tier.

Part of the criteria is you have to a team in nearly every girls grade from 10th - PDL

Be great if all clubs had a PDL and WPL team . but womens football is an interesting beast . 2 years ago western were starting to look like a team that were on the rise again even beating national champions coastal in the fitz cup final . This year they were wooden spooners. So to answer your question . In theory yes , but who knows..

If the powers that be have taken the view that a club may be "working towards" a pipeline of players, then I can see how Parklands, Selwyn, Waimak, even UC all meet that criteria. FC20 WPL/PDL teams both struggled this year, but they have the pipeline. Western on the other hand, were marginal on even entering this year from memory; and certainly don't have much in the way of player pipeline unless they are working schools hard.

I wouldn't quite say the Nomads Ladies team were demoted when they effectively sat 5th out of 10 teams in the start of season Div 1. The problem was that 4 teams were in a different league to the rest and Mainland recognised this by restructuring the leagues into 3 groups after the first round. The current team at Nomads would not make the step up, especially when the youngest player is 24 and the oldest at 54! I think Scottie Road may be a touch optimistic, especially as it'll be interesting to see which ladies remain next year the current coach has stepped down, some of whom have a great rapport and link. Would be good to see them up there in the next few years though

Did anyone catch the Nelson women's team that came down and played some MPL women's teams recently and is trying to push for a place in the league. I wonder if they do get in whether they create a bye or it's an the expense of someone else.

Will coach Mike De Bono release Pride players not in the match day squad for the Lotto U19 Girls tournament? I note that ASBP Youth have a bye the weekend of Napier U19 tournament, specifically so franchise players can play for their clubs.

Interesting issue this. I can see both sides, Mike trying to ensure the Pride retain their title so will want a full squad to cover any injuries that may arise and no doubt may be worried if he releases players for the Coastal tournament that the may be either over used or injured over the weekend.

I think there is a difference between the two tournaments in that the Napier one is considered by many as a key fixture on the national scene, including NZ Football with national age group coaches / selectors on hand to run a rule over players, with the Coastal tournament not at the same stage at the moment.

Also some will no doubt argue the playing surface the Park Island is several notches ahead of Cuthberts Green.

Yip it's a shame, however it is what it is. No hard feelings, despite the digs at our pitch.

You'll be pleased to know the fields have come up rather nice without being played on non-stop so it should make for a great tournament. Thanks for your support.
