I dropped into Wakefield Park last night as there was a number of game being played. Looked like some serious talent on show.

Was this a Capital Football initiative? if so, what a fantastic evening. All games seemed to be of an exceptionally high standard.

I believe it's being driven by Stu Jacobs at Kaizen and involves Kaizen, Ole, Phoenix, Karori and Stop Out.

It looks like there will be two or three games there each week for the next 6 to 8 weeks.

I watched two games last night. An Ole team beat Kaizen by so many I stopped counting and another younger Ole team drew 3-3 with Phoenix.

Just back from watching another two games between Wellington Academies.

First up, Ole 1 vs Phoenix 1 was a comprehensive 4-1 win to Ole. It could have been that at HT with Ole opening up the Phoenix defense at will but not taking their chances. WP appeared to play a 5-2-3 but the gap was so far between 2-3 they offered very little. They seemed content to sit 20 yards from their own goal and leave the front 3 to their own devices.

Second half saw changes to both teams and WP changed to just the two up front but it made no difference to both the possession or passing stats. One of the Ole goals was a sensational team effort with one touch passes from inside their own half to the edge of the box with a cross and a nice side volley to finish it off.

Game 2 was Ole 2 v Kaizen. Ole all looked about 12 years old and we're 3-0 up when I left with a couple of minutes to go. They were just a smaller and younger version but are just as comfortable on the ball.

I watched another three games last night.

Game 1 was WPA against Island Bay. Can't say the football was particularly good to be honest. Both teams have the odd decent player but I've watched WPA for at least 4 years now and I just can't see a style or pattern of play that's positive. It's just pack the defense and lamp it up to two quick kids upfront. The rest look like they are making it up on the pitch. I missed the start and only saw one goal to WPA so can't confirm the score.

Game 2. Swifts 0 - Ole 11. Yes eleven. West's won the first half of the U17 season in 2018, Karori the second, so i was hoping for a decent game. Swifts had at least one "ringin" I could see but it was men against boys which is ironic really. That's three times these two have played this year with the aggregate being 0-25.

Game 3. Ole - Kaizen. I think this ended 1-4 to Kaizen. This again was men against boys but in the true sense with Kaizen taking full advantage of a couple of players who haven't appeared in previous weeks. The second half goals were all long balls over the top to big, strong, fast kids (taking advantage of no AR's possibly) who ran in on goal.

This "Wellington Football Academy Tournament" had been a real eye opener. Ole are so far ahead of the pack you really have to question the quality of the football education the others are providing.
