Any news for the upcoming season?

We (Karori Cougars) have got a couple of friendlies organised before the season starts.  Looking forward to them.

Just waiting for the fixtures to come out for the season now, think they are due March 20th?

Going to be a tough season for us going by how the last two teams managed after coming up from cap 3.  Expecting a bit of a jump in quality from the opposition.

How your friendly on the weekend go?

Yeah went ok.  We were playing the Sprig and Fern's Sunday team and won 5-0 so not too bad.  4 of the goals were from set pieces so I am sure they would have been annoyed with themselves for that.

Was a typical first game though, bit hectic and we never got the foot on the ball like we wanted to.  Rolling subs so never really settled.

We play Olympic thirds tonight at Kaiwharawhara Park so that will give us a good idea of where we are as they were Cap 2 last season.

Anyone else got any games organised?

Villa played a friendly against a team from Brooklyn northern which ended up 3 all, we have a very new and young team this year and this was our first game. The coach was trying a whole lot of different combinations and formations which in my opinion didn't work to well but it gives us something to work on at training

Yeah our game last night was very similar with a lot of changes and people trying different positions etc.  We have got quite a few new faces so just trying to settle everyone in to decide the strongest team.

We drew 4-4 with Olympic thirds.  Was a decent enough game but both teams were hampered by how small the pitch is at Kaiwharawhara so neither team had space to do much with the ball.

Good hit out though and we have one more friendly organised to play Upper Hutt before the season starts so that will be another good test for us.

can anyone clarify the playing age rule to me? we had a 15yr old in our initial squad who is a bloody handy player and keen to play but cap football turned around and said he cant play in the capital competition or our wairarapa local league comp? there are now a few rumours round here that wairarapa united have a whole team of young players many of whom are under 16 and are looking at entering the wairarapa div 2 comp? without seeing the draw this cant be confirmed but it seems as there are different rules for different people?

just play him in a grade without team cards required. cap 6 down

then there is no proof of who played in the game so age cannot be checked at a latter stage if a complaint is made….

i know a couple of teams who have used this hole to avoid age restrictions and playing girls in the last couple of years to my dismay.

"Can't be checked" unless you break the rules on Wakefield 2 while there is a major Central League game on at the same time on Wakefield 1 and Capital Football staff see the offending parties and catch them red handed. *cough Cap 9 uni cough*

there's your mistake….

Wakefield 1 with 2 X capital football ref's watching while warming up prior to there games which were to follow that night must of thought those two long haired players that had nicely developed peck's and cute bums where just a couple of young boys with unusual tastes in attire as they didn't say boo…..

so don't play Wakefield 2 and you will be fine…...

Anyone have any games over the weekend?

We Played Upper Hutt seconds and won 5-0.  Bit of a flattering scoreline but we played quite well first half before we started trying some new players/positions etc.

UH have got a pretty young team but some good wee players!  Will be interesting to see how much the develop this season.

Decent pre season for us but still not too sure how we will manage the step up in divisions.

Cheers Chris

Thanks for the  match played in pretty good spirit on the whole. You guys certainly deserved the win (hard to say otherwise with the scoreline!)

The first half you certainly punished us for giving the ball away when trying some silly passes or simply not moving to receive a pass. At times we played some reasonable football from the back four through the midfield but struggled to get much happening in the final third.

You guys played well and certainly took your chances  and certainly had it all over us in terms of experience and size.

It will be a tough year for us as the club has had a large number of players move on from the first and second teams from last year.

Average age of the team on Saturday would have been 20 at best as a guess but we do have a couple of players that weren't available on Saturday which will certainly help us.

Good luck for the season ahead .

That's not good news re Upper Hutt player stocks. However, they have huge Junior numbers,  good facilities and croud support for their home games is very strong.

I hope they can bounce back

We ( Nae ) enjoyed a hard fought 2-1 win over Stop Out 2nds. Was a very back and forth affair and looked like it was grinding towards a draw when we managed to score a header in the dying minutes of the game. Thanks to Stop Out for staying behind afterwards and showing their respects as we saw off a great man and friend to the club.

we (villa) had a very slow start against island bay allowing them to score on their first attack, slowly woke up and got back into the game, could have really gone either way as there were many great chances at both ends, well take the 3 points anyway they come and look forward to playing wainui next weekend

Well we had a good wake up call against Wainui on Friday!

4-0 down in the first 20 minutes.  A mixture of Wainui being clinical and us still being in pre season mode I think.  Looked like it was going to be double figures at that point so I am proud of the way we clawed our way back into it but not sure if that was Wainui taking their foot off the pedal a little.

Few defensive mistakes that we probably would have gotten away with in Cap 3 so we know now we need to be switched on from the start every game this season.

Hoping to bounce back on Saturday and get  our season started.

A very physical but good game against wainui yesterday finishing 3 all. Villa were down to 10 men after 35 mins for retaliation. Went into half time 2 all and then we scored not long after the 2nd half started only to concede a 3rd to wainui with 5 mins to play. Having a bad run with injuries after loosing a pivotal play maker last week with a knee injury and then this week losing the captain with another knee injury. Looking forward to our first away trip of the year against the bobcats

1-1 v Stop Out for us on Saturday.  Was a decent game with both teams looking pretty tired by the end.  We led at half time despite not having a lot of the ball but Stop Out got right back in to it after the break.  Could have went either way after that with our keeper making at least 3 big saves but we also squandered a few chances ourselves.

Good physical game and not one bad tackle that I can think of so was good to play in.

Happy to get our season started after a poor showing the week before.

Naenae away this week is going to be another tough one so hopefully we can keep improving.

Tough first game at home for Upper Hutt against a good IBU side.

We went one down fairly early and with a mixture of some silly mistakes on our part and some good play presented IB with a number of chances to go well  ahead but our Goalkeeper was again terrific pulling off a number of very good saves.

We battled hard and slowly got back in the game levelling at around 30 mins then going ahead in the 35th but let one slip just before the half so into the sheds at 2-2 we were fairly happy.

Second half we started poorly again and IB over ran our midfield scoring a couple of quick goals to lead 4 -2. We had a very good shout for a penalty turned down which may have changed things, but instead we faded and pretty much chased shadows for the rest of the match with our Goalie again pulling of a number of very good saves. Ineviatably IB scored a fith and the match kind of faded out from there.

Overall fairly happy with how our young side went, continuing to try and play positive football and an improvement on our first outing although that was certainly helped by an increase in the players we had available.

Next up, Wainui away!

At this time of the year it's ok, wasn't a bad pitch on the weekend. The goals are too large so really is a chance to score more. Later in the season it turns into a mud pitch.

depending on the weather on the day it can be a gem of a ground as protected from some winds as in the valley and this early in the season as mentioned not a bog around the cricket block but you will get bounce variance so don't let it bounce if you can.

local's can be hard to beat on this ground but not impossible if you play a good game.

good luck.

Have a look next time you are there, they are higher than normal goals, not sure if wider than a normal goal though.

Being a bit on the short side for a keeper, I don't much like the sound of that!

Yup biggest Massacre since the Battle of Little Big Horn.

Six players either called to first team or out from previous week when team is battling anyway certainly does not help especially when playing against a pretty good Wainui side. Obviously totally outclassed on the day and embarrassing to all concerned.

Only upwards from here and a tough game this week against top of the table Stokes Valley to look forward too.

Happy to get our first win of the season on Saturday against Naenae.

We lost another early goal and looked like we were going to be a few down but Naenae didn't take their chances in the first twenty mins.  We started to grow in to the game and their keeper made a few cracking saves before we got a penalty just before half time.  Ref then made me retake the pen because a few defenders had encroached which was a first for me.  Thankfully scuffed the retake down the middle after the keeper went the same way as the first one.  We got another a few minutes later with a half volley which went in off the post (which seemed the only way to beat their keeper) to go in 2-1 at HT.

Naenae started strong again second half and were putting a lot of pressure on our defence but we managed to ride it out and scored a third from a long diagonal which was headed in off the post again.

We got another penalty just before the end, probably a bit soft but the ref had given a lot of soft free kicks to both teams so we weren't complaining.

Delighted with the win and getting all 4 goals was a nice bonus!

There was only soft free kicks going one way. The last penalty was an absolute joke and the ref wouldn't even explain what the first one was about. Funny how during the speeches when it was mentioned on how soft the penalties were, that the ref was standing there nodding his head. He also apologised to one of our players during the game for an incorrect offside - a major no no for a ref! But you guys were still better for the win.
