Just received an email about a proposed merger between Onehunga Sports and Three Kings United to create a superclub to meet NZF requirements.

Second big merger proposed recently, is this really what the goal of said requirements was?

Will be interesting to see whether members buyin to the idea.

Is this a proper merger where all teams are rebranded under Auckland United, or one of those faux merger where there is still some seperation between the two clubs.

Proposed joint venture between Three Kings United and Onehunga Sports Football clubs with the creation of Auckland United Football Club.

The Boards of both clubs have spent the past few months exploring the merits of a strategic alliance to form a new club to deliver in the first instance a talent pathway that adheres to New Zealand Football’s licensing requirements, from 9th grade through to the senior Premiers, both men and women. The proposal will create a high quality football environment that is sustainable, benefits a wider geographical area and will take effect from 1 January 2020 with the establishment of the Talent pathway for both boys and girls, supported by high quality coaching under the new Club’s name.

The Wellington Phoenix Soccer School will operate as the Auckland United Football Academy in the new structure.

For the 2020 season those 5-8 year olds and senior social players will be largely unaffected by this change and will continue to be registered for their respective community Club. The Boards in recommending a strategic alliance will ensure that their community football programmes will remain an important focus and more details will be available at the respective member’s evening.

An information evening with members will be held by both Clubs ahead of a Special General Meeting

Three Kings United will be holding a members’ information evening on Wednesday 13th November 2019 at 7pm at the club rooms at Keith Hay Park.

Onehunga Sports will be holding a members’ information evening on Tuesday 12th November 2019 at 7pm at the lounge at Waikaraka Park.

Both Clubs will be putting the proposal to a member vote at a Special General Meeting to be held at 7pm on Monday 18th November 2019 at their respective clubrooms.

By Monday 4th November there will be an informational website available at www.aucklandunited.org.nz that will explain more around the reasons behind this proposal, along with outlining how football will look for you in 2020.

boring name, but interesting insofar as why would they adopt the identity of an entire super city if they didn't have BIG BIG plans?

Interesting timing also considering TKU is having a massive rebuild of the clubrooms. Where would this team play? Seems a shame to pick just one ground as Waikaraka is a good place to watch a game of footy still.

Welnix (Morrison) have openly said they will try help out the creation of an Auckland A League team. They know value of having a genuine derby rival. So first step in that could be helping with the formation of an Academy.

Who knows, but exciting news if so, and hopefully a step in the right direction of the Auckland football community getting together for an A League bid.

Any very wealthy football tragics currently involved with Onehunga or Three Kings?

May not mean much at all but both clubs are pretty close to Mt Smart.

The extent of this attachment is that Onehunga get to use the Phoenix name (OK, and some other PR stuff like player visits).

The current president of Three Kings United is Murray Holdaway who set up the Vista software group and is on the NBR rich list with an estimate of about $50 million

it actually makes sense. create a united super city club, grow a solid base of fans and players in the IPS Handa comp and below, in a few years when you're a sold club with good backers and support and the a-league looks to expand from 14-16 clubs make your bid. You know you'll have the Nix's backing cos they've supported you from day one.

It does make a lot of sense if an A League bid is their longer term plan. I not sure they will grow much of a fan base - none of the Handa Prem clubs will ever get large crowds.

But it does seem a good sound plan to build off a large junior/club playing base, sound infrastructure, academy etc etc before launching a bid. Would still need to work with ACFC, ES, Waitak and NRFL teams.

ACFC have said an A League bid is beyond their resources, but this Auckland United 'super club' maybe able to pull it off.

Be very interesting to see what further announcements come out on Monday, and of course both clubs need to vote on the intended merger. Hopefully members are looking at the bigger picture for Akld & NZ football - if an A League bid is part of the longer term plan.

If you put this development together with Western Springs getting their hooks into Waitakere United, what you have seems to be the big central Auckland clubs (inc. of course ESAFC) deciding that the National League is worth something and they want a piece of it. Which is a very good thing IMHO, the only issue being that it doesn't look like the North Shore or south Auckland clubs are getting a look-in. (Note that North Shore recently turned down a merger with Forrest Hill-Milford which would have been the equivalent of this)

Are Onehunga Sports still entitled to any ongoing training compensation/solidarity contribution from any transfer fee Sarpreet Singh earns in his career?  If so where would that end up?

In the past decade has their not be at least 2 other mergers based on one club having the facilities/money and the other has the player base.

Have they all prospered?

EDIT: with the new ISPHanda rule won't ACFC merge into Central United? to become a 12 month club

Not sure of the full circumstances of all these mergers but these are the mergers that have occurred in the last decade

2011 Nelson United, Nelson Metro & Nelson City form FC Nelson

2011 Avon United & Burnside form FC Twenty 11

2012 Cashmere Wanderers & Woolston Technical form Cashmere Technical

2015 University-Mt Wellington & Bohemian Celtic form Uni-Mount Bohemian Celtic

2016 Pukekohe & Waiuku form Franklin United - not a full merger, Pukekohe and Waiuku still exist as clubs in their own right

2017 Manukau City & Mangere United form Manukau United - another that isn't a full merger (yet)

Had to it lookup now - can't remember which has the facilities and which the player base. But this is an old one. Can't remember the more recent ones mentioned last year at DF park.

Blockhouse Bay of course amalgamated with Green Bay to play as Bay Olympic from 1998. The Blockhouse Bay team of the 70's was one of the finest teams in the country winning the National League / Chatham Cup double in 1970 and in the ensuing 6 years never finishing lower than 5th.

No, this isn't quite trust. Bohs are a separate club who simply operate out of the Uni-Mount headquarters. Uni-Mount have for most of the last 2 decades concentrated on being a "community club" and renting out their facilities to social teams.

That ended about 4 years ago.  If I remember correctly it was a good operation that gave some good players an opertunity.  I doubt they have any legal rights over the name.  In my opinion, the new entity could have chosen a different name but no major.

Forrest Hill and Milford merged around 2000.

Don't forget Eden and Mt Roskill around 1997 as well.

Howick and Pakuranga around 1995.

Bohs have been searching for a ground of their own for ages, but none were available in the AFF catchment (NFF had a few options but they were too far away). Up until a couple of years ago there was talk about creating a joint headquarters/ground with the Auckland GAA, but that was cancelled after the latter hooked up with Massey RFC.

Perhaps the more interesting ones are the mergers that didn't happen. Recently North Shore turned down merger with Forest Hill. Any others that spring to mind ? Vaguely recall merger proposal between Olympic and Wellington United  being turned down - not sure which party - just think Greeks, Hungarians , Dutchmen , etc all together. Might have made the Balkan wars seem like a Vicars Tea Party ?

this is not a merger at all - just Bohs using Uni-Mt to host their team - sorry didn't see Doloras had answered this already.

Also while they can't find a ground AFF also won't green light them to be a new club - due to too many clubs already.

Yeah, there was an idea of Bohs and the AGAA going halves in a re-development of Gloucester Park in Onehunga, but that would have cost $2 million or something and AGAA got an offer from Massey RFC for free. About the only other free park in the AFF zone at the moment is at the top of Mt Albert.
