I would have picked Karori as well, but I think the hometown advantage is a biggie at this point of the year.

I’m predicting extra time with a Grace Surridge winner.

Yup, it's sh!thouse. Gotta be time for a Southern League with the women, the only competitive games this season is between these two. And we had people poo pooing the idea of our best women playing tougher games in boys leagues, when they should be either participating in a bye or playing against the mighty Halswell or Uni.

Where is the #equality in the southern league?

Sounds good but some clubs moaned about the cost when Tasman were in Mainland WPL, so how many clubs would seriously wish to commit to a Southern (South Island) League.

Sadly teams seem to come and go from the WPL, since it was formed in 2004 there has only been two seasons on the trot that have had the same teams playing in the league.

Pros and cons about the better players playing in boys league - if the women's league is not strong enough then it only means the women's league becomes even weaker if the better players are not playing in it.

Central region preview for round 1 of the Kate Sheppard Cup on Monday

Upper Hutt City (WL) v Kapiti Coast United (CP), Maidstone Park KO 11am

Three times semi finalists, Upper Hutt meet Kapiti Coast United who are equaling their best ever performance (ie 2nd round) in their 5th time entering the competition

No previous meetings in the cup

current W-League champions Upper Hutt will prove too strong for the Cap prem side

PICK Upper Hutt City

Vic Uni (CP) v Wellington United (WL) Boyd Wilson Field, KO 1pm

Wellington United's best performance waas the Quarter Finals in 2015, while Vic Uni have never got past round 3

one previous meeting in the cup between the teams, Vic Uni won 5-1 in 2014

Vic Uni are battling it out at the top of Cap Prem with Waterside and Wellington United reserves. Wellington United have Jayme Lee Hunter back for the US Uni holidays as well as Michaela Robertson from the FFDP in Auckland.

Reckon Uni will put up a decent fight, but United will prove too good for them

Pick Wellington United

Seatoun (WL) v Waterside Karori (CP), Seatoun Park, KO 1pm

Two clubs that have been major players in Womens football in Wellington in the last 20 years, both on the waine a bit now with both clubs only having one team each. Seatoun have made it to the semi finals five times, while Waterside have done it once (2011)

Seatoun who have a feeder club arrangement with Island Bay this season, have yet to win a a game and are currently bottom of the W-League, Waterside meanwhile are unbeaten and 3 points clear in Cap prem

3 previous meetings Seatoun won 2-0 (2012) & 4-2 (2013) & Waterside won 3-1 in 2009

Pick Waterside Karori

Wairarapa United (WL) v Palmerston North Marist, Masterton Memorial, KO 2pm

Two times finalist Wairarapa (99,2000) meet 3 x quarter finalists PN Marist

One meeting in the past Marist won 7-0 in 2016

However things will likely be different this time, Wairarapa have recruited a large chunk of Palmy Marist's team from last season and should also have latest recruit Siobhan Patterson, another on holiday from US Uni in the team

They met in the W-League a couple of weeks ago and Rapa won 8-1

Pick Wairarapa United

Good point - I guess if they all registered for Seatoun there won't be an issue ... but I doubt that they are.

Nicola Blacklaws
Juliet Conway
Samantha O'Callaghan
Cara Chung
Tiffany Bock

Looking forward to cheering the OneSports first team on at the hallowed ground of Kiwitea tomorrow. Our main keeper is injured right now so I was kind of hoping I might get a run, but no luck, they've actually got Rebecca Rolls on the books. :D

Rebecca Rolls!!! How old is she now??? I remember seeing her turn out for North Wellington in the late 90s and that was supposedly just before she was going to retire!

oh that's right forgot she played cricket - that may explain the reason I thought she was retiring in the late 90s - probably was retiring from top level football to concentrate on cricket.

She played for NZ at football

What I'm told is that Rebecca concentrates on her high-powered job these days but is happy to turn out as a "ringer" when she can. Funny thing is that last season she did the same job for Lynn-Avon, which was the club I was at also. Is she following me around?!

(I had to explain to my German reserves teammate what a "wicketkeeper" is. "You know the catcher in baseball? Same thing.")

Two defaults in the Northern region.

I can imagine why Otumoetai didn't feel like having their arses handed to them by Eastern Suburbs on such a miserable day; but why did Fencies pull out of their top-of-the-Conference clash with Norwest? Thus incurring a default fine on top of their entrance fee?
