Post about the latest, or greatest games you are playing or played. Let others know about obscure little gems.

Sang-Froid: Tales of Werewolves

Just downloaded the beta, (going live 6/4/13), of this  from Steam for around $16 NZ. The download gives you access to the full game when it is released.

It's a Diablo/Torchlight clone but with a well put together tower defense strategy element thrown in. Graphics are a mix of Torchlight and The Walking Dead which work well. The Storyline is written by a professional and prize winning writer Bryan Perro.

I've only had time to go through the tutorial, but it's pretty damn good so far, (a tutorial that is fun speaks volumes), challenging and scary at times, you have to beat off wolves to protect your family but then come the werewolves which are far nastier. Other creatures are mentioned later on the game.

The basic story in the beginning finds you holed up in a cabin in the woods with your brother and sister. The Devil has made a deal with the the local priest to bring him the girl with an army of vulpine minions to do the job. You have a choice to play one of the two brothers. I've started with Joseph who is armed with an axe, rifle and a variety of traps to defend the cabin.

My only niggle so far is that I would have called it Cold blood: Tales of Werewolves but hell they are a Canadian Games company!

I reckon this may well be one of those unexpected hits of 2013.

Yeah the priest tries it on with her thus allowing the Devil to come and blackmail. Finding it hard, it's all about combining different types of trap to delay the wolves in one spot when you are fighting in another - tough but great gameplay.

Starting to tip-toe back into the world of Advanced Squad Leader.  Scary.

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/243/advanced-squad-leader

Ahh the mighty Avalon Hill, the kings of hex-based warfare. Hated them for what they did to Runequest, the greatest role-playing game ever. The mythology p*ssed all over D&D.

My brother spent hours playing PanzerBlitz.

I can see a very sad, cave-like place, fetid, filled with the smell of unwashed flesh. Cheese sandwiches, chippies lay in piles. The music of Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath fills the ears. Someone curses as they step on a small metal sharp thing. What can it be? Why it looks like a small lead Goblin, a  "Miniature" Goblin almost? That can only mean...

OMG!! The Yellow Fever Board Game Club has arisen!!

Run for 15cm and roll your fumble! That's right the red and yellow ones, x2 D10,  that's 53, let's see, "You see a small Pixie and feel suddenly weak and get a funny feeling in your tummy"  This reduces your Con and Dex  x1 D4 for 3 rounds.

Grab your pencils, rulers, D20s,D6s,D12s and my fav the D8 and meet me round my Mums and for Godsake don't bring your little brother he always ruins it. I'll bring the Rule Book you bring the Monster Manual.

Hurrah!!!  I'll never get a girlfriend ever!! But will have some of the best times of my life in a sad way!!!!

I knew there would be some old Role-Players out there. People unafraid of dark dungeons and faced possible death fearlessly with mighty thews or subtle arcane arts.

I cried when I lost my Very Rich Noble fighter "Stratus". His Battle Axe was of no use against the Gorp's acid juices, (sort of like the amoebus blobs/slimes you get in dungeons). No running back into battle from the Graveyard for me, like all these Soft Core MMORGS do these days. Unless your god or another player  rezzed you, you stayed dead tough titty. I had to roll 11% or below on x2 d10's to get My God Orlanth to bring me back with Divine Intervention I rolled 72% and the waterworks started.

A brothers friend 17 at the time, I was about 12, lost his Barb "Grarrgun" he died and Daz started crying too. It was a tough day in Snake Pipe Hollow.

My brother was an excellent GM/DM and preferred that to playing a character, still he always was a Meglomaniac with a God Complex B*stard though.

I think Warhammer killed Role Playing off with it's table top battles and then of course you had computer games and the rest is history...

There has to be others out in the Fever Zone Junior not just us? Come on guys what was your game?

When I launch Barbarossa (War in the East), I'll use this thread as base camp, dude.
PS: Problem is, like yourself, I've gone back to a simpler past time...reminiscing about former glories...and why did I throw away over $400 worth of ASL s**t???  Just brought a couple of ASL starter kits to gets the "skills" back...reading, studying, re-learning...because it is THE game (even if it is slightly unplayable when heavy weaponry is involved)...

Ours was the original Squad Leader and the bolt ons.

Crescendo of Doom
Cross of Iron
G.I. Anvil of Victory

I lived a year in Aus and apart from some time towards the end of the year with a large chested Australian lass who played Volleyball I spent an inordinate amount of time playing monster games of Squad Leader.  Four of us, 20+ boards set up 2x10.  One person with the Russians, one the Germans, one the US and one the British. Don't think we had the Pacific sets.

We'd have one two board set that was for crap battles where you could only use armour and anti-tank guns with weaponary under 50mm.  You would end up with wrecks stacked 20 high.

My brother has the original ASL rules folder and the first expansion set, suspect they are at my parents but we never really got back into it when we came back here.

Steel Panthers was of course the obvious replacement once it came along on the PC, but by then boardwise we'd moved on to Battletech.  I have a regiment of BattleTech miniatures including aerospace elements sitting in the garage at home.

Launching Barbarossa soon...

4th Panzer Group NOT to move on Leningrad...their target: Moscow.  3rd and 2nd Panzer: Moscow.  1st Panzer Group: drive south.

Bliming heck...this game, Barbarossa campaign, it's a bit of a monster TBF...you really are mirco managing the entire Eastern Front.

At 'challenging level', turn one, June 26...time for the infantry to wipe out some major frontier pockets.  Minsk will sure fall this turn.  Guderian's panzers are now some 150 miles into the Soviet Union...the Soviet question in the southern sector?  Not much happening down there...have to be cautious...major concentrations of Soviet armour here...

July 3, start of turn 3.  Almost half way to Moscow. Panzer armies need to pause.  Gas issues.  Should I swing 2nd Panzer south?  Enemy forces in the Kiev area are massive.  The Pripyet is such a bitch.  THe Soviets have lost over half a million men.  Krauts 45,000.  2000 enemy planes shot down vs 150.  4,000 enemy tanks destroyed vs 170.  The usual story: need to regroup...the infantry need to catch up, after their annihilation of the surrounded Russian armies on the borders...

Dude, this is a very good game (especially the Leningrad scenario) - but now I've got to move 200+ divisions (the Finns + the Romanians have declared war), countless HQ/air units, rail repair units, reinforce everything...gas issues...I might have to restart this baby at "normal" level...

Just while we're on this fred:

Which one?

Afrika Korps

Fallschirmjaeger (paratroops)

Gebirgsjaeger (Mtn Troops)

Wehrmacht

I choose Falschirmjaeger (Fort Eban Emael, Monte Casino etc) - Stevo, if you had a few units of these dudes, Ivan would be suing for a new non-aggression pact and you would have access to his oilfields in the South, thereby allowing you to push Britischer Schweinhund out of North Africa.

If that fails then a couple of legions of Trajanic Romans with a cohort or two of Pretorian Guard will do the trick (but you need plenty of pila for the street fighting in Leningrad so your legionnaries need to operate in small units and ditch the large shields).

Sounds like your brother's mate could have done better.

Also from that same vintage, the original Rubik's cube.  I could solve that thing in a reasonable time (minutes, not seconds).  Can I do it now?  Can I bollocks - would have to dismantle the f*cker.

It certainly was a game of more than 2 halves, and if I'd been able to use the calculator for anything but gaming, id be able to give the correct stats. Rubiks cube-i reckon i smashed more than I solved...
