Our current modem has just shark itself so I need to invest in a new one. We are currently on a VDSL connection but we are expecting Fibre to be available in December.
I am right in saying that a gigabit modem will still be ok on VDSL?

You can get modems that cross over (do both VDSL & UFB); It's just a matter of how it's programmed - UFB's easier to program on a router than VDSL.
I wouldn't bank on Fibre being ready as soon as you'd like it - especially being that time of year because Chorus go into a brown out period start of December. If you're in an apartment/shared driveway you've gotta go through consents which can significantly delay the installation process (may even cancel if one of the tenants/residents denies it).
plus Chorus are already months behind in the fibre installation process. we were originally expecting it in dec-jan, not they say March - april.
