No one's mentioned the earthquake?

In Dunedin, got woken up at around 4:30, entire house was rocking for around 30 seconds, noise was quite horrendous.

Haven't been able to get back to sleep since.

I was actually in Rome the night of the big Italian quake last year, which was obviously a heck of a lot worse, being a few stories up in a crappy derelict hotel. Funny how everyone knows what you SHOULD do in an earthquake (door frame, table, etc), but all I can do is lie in bed thinking "cooooooooool".

Here's the link, a few damage reports coming through:

Hit quite bad here just south of Christchurch city. There's a bit of structural damage in places near.

Did a once over down the street seems everyone is alright. Had a heap of rumbling aftershocks. Storm water and sludge covering up all our streets. Suns up now so will check around.

Just talking to a few mates and from the sounds of it we are quite lucky that it happened at 4am cause otherwise there could have been casualties. Scottishbhoy says he is fine.

It seems a miracle that it happened at 4.30am, otherwise there would have been massive casualties one would expect

was a big shake, woke the house hold up, would have been for at least a minute and  a lot of after shocks.
House is fine but lots of stuff thrown on the floor but no damage.
Not very nice.
did get under a door frame, usually you expect them to finish after 20 secons but not this one!!

Good information and news re earthquake on Radio NZ ,proves the need for  a non commercial information /news based national radio station.
When things like this happen the last thing you want to hear is that Brisco's are surprisingly having a fekin sale or Harvey Norman are offering 40 years interest free on useless unnecessary electrical crap!

If you're listening to AM Radio then chances are you're set in your ways therefore you do not require a 50" 3D LCD Screen with Surround Sound and a new set of cooking utensils...

But should you change your mind about this then I recommend SONY! Proud Major Sponsor of the Wellington Phoenix FC!!!

Its a crystal set actually !
The first time I heard about Surround sound was during the eighties when the film earthquake starring Steve Mcqueen was released!
They promised that you would feel the cinema shake !

Comments from the Herald Sun online -

Gibo of Sydney Posted at 7:37 AM Today

Always have 2 weeks of food in the cupboard. In the last days not long before Christs Second Coming there will be a great increase in wars, earthquakes, famines and diseases...Luke chapter 21. The wars to the region are yet to come. The prophecy incorporated in WHAT WILL BECOME OF AUSTRALIA 1974 by Jack Burrell a good reference.

I take your point about the commercials, but I don't see how that makes the content being broadcast about the earthquake any less valid/useful/credible.  Newstalk ZB's coverage this morning has been superb.  Admittedly I haven't been listening to Nat Rad, so can't comment on what they've been doing.

Funny you say that. Been watching the Earthquake news on TV1 this morning - they break to an ad for Godfreys of Christchurch, advertising their big vacuum cleaner sale this weekend.

Well whoop-de-do, our house has been torn down by an earthquake, but let's take our mind off it by going vacuum cleaner shopping.

On second thought, it could be quite timely with the big clean-up...

those ads have been bought and paid for, therefore tv stations are obligated to screen them regardless.

That was scary, it just kept going.  Most earthquakes go for a few seconds - that was at least a minute.  I couldn't see a thing and didn't want to turn on the light in case the wiring had been screwed and it started a fire (didn't think fully logically at that hour).  As such I just stayed where I was freaking out until it stopped.  Alarms going off everywhere and some sizable aftershocks.  Nobody in my house hurt fortunately but my mates mother had a bookcase or wardrobe fall on her but she's all good.  Got to be thankful it wasn't during the day or it could've been a lot worse.

Went into work at 8am (video store) and thousands of DVD's everywhere - absolute chaos and took hours to rectify and the good work could easily be undone by another big aftershock.  When we finished the boss showed us the quake on the security cameras and one of the shelves a camera was focusing on was being flung from side to side (these are big and heavy) and we found DVD's under the shelves still standing upright.  Also part of the wall was cracked and you could see outside.

Some streets are flooded, in town there's rubble all over some of the streets, and soil has seeped up through the asphalt making big bumps in the road (as well as massive cracks in the road).  Also apparently the Avon River swelled up hugely and went over its banks when the main quake was still happening.

Eeep, I was awake and felt this. Thought Wellington was finally going to the sh*tter and getting flushed by it's maker.

Didn't think it was this bad. Bloody hell.

I didn't either and normally my room shakes pretty bad. Hope all those in CHCH are safe. My mum's best mate and her daughter decided to go to queenstown a day early, funny how stuff like that happens, they'd have been affected pretty bad.

I'm back home in chch for uni holidays. Got a rude awakening from that. A bookshelf fell over at the flat that i was in and a few vases fell off the shelves at home. Power was out from 4.30 til about 10am. Lots of roads cracked, anyone with a brick chimney will be lucky to see it still standing.

Up to $2Billion worth of damage. A lot of it is out in the New Brighton area as well, which is a lower socioeconomic suburb of chch. And now there's a report of 9 people killed in a plane crash over fox glacier. Pretty horrible day quite frankly.
