This is a step in the right direction, but Sky really do struggle with Football.

Followers of football in the Midlands will be thrilled to see that Birmingham and Derby feature next Saturday morning live on "Football Champions League LIVE". I kid you not.

Congratulations to both teams.

on a positive spin - Europa league which wasn't on last year, Capital One Cup, and Football championship all covered and Champions league at the same level if not slightly better than how ESPN delivered it.

If ratings for these games are good then hopefully they will put more on - if ratings are poor then we will have to put up with what is being offered.

Bullshark.

Watch football from any one of the plethora of alternative sources available. Sky is NOT a monopoly. Ther's this thing called the internet now.

yeah i must be in the minority wanting to watch Football, rugby, league, netball, cricket, basketball....

WTF?

You said if ratings are poor, then we will just have to put up with what is being offered.

My answer was no, you don't have to just put up with it... Sky is NOT a monopoly...

i.e. you CAN actually keep Sky, enjoy what they cover (including rugby, league, netball, some cricket, basketball) but you can ALSO watch other content via the internet.

Just because sky don't cover it doesn't mean you have to just accept it is not covered, and grumble about it. You don't have to be faithful to Sky and ONLY watch what they provide... you can actually watch Sky AND watch other sports through other providers.

It doesn't even need to cost you anything.

As just one example, @TVNZondemand has the Bundesliga coverage now. It's free. You can watch that and watch what Sky provide.

So you most certainly do NOT have to just "put up with what is being offered".

Was reading about the new bill regarding GST on imported goods and thought this was very interesting, especially for those circumnavigating geoblocks:

The paper, released by Revenue Minister Todd McClay on Tuesday morning, spells out details of the Government's plan to start collecting GST on the likes of Netflix and Spotify subscriptions, iTunes downloads and e-books.

Similar taxes, which are colloquially known as "Netflix taxes", have been introduced by South Africa, Norway, South Korea and Switzerland, and are in the pipeline in Australia and Japan.

The tax would be collected automatically but consumers who managed to avoid paying GST on imported services, for example, by tricking suppliers into thinking they lived outside the country, could be fined up to $25,000

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/71212349/nzs-netflix-tax-will-raise-40m-a-year-as-gst-charged-on-digital-downloads

Not sure how it could be policed... and if the intent of tricking suppliers into thinking they are not in NZ for content purposes not tax avoidance warrants a fine so large. (or fine at all)

It sounds like it is more about using it to avoid the tax, so for example I pay for my Netflix in NZ (So would get GST, I just use the overseas content :P)

Whereas say using Steam the price if I am showing as NZ is $14.99, but I switch to US to pay $13.00 then I am deliberately using something to trick them into thinking I am not in NZ, just to not pay the tax.

calm down - I just meant that for those who use SKY to watch football that if we want SKY to show more it needs to rate more.

If your happy in the grey world of streaming or the slightly more black and white world of online subscriptions then that's cool.

At no point did I mean to infer that if it wasn't on SKY you couldn't watch it somewhere else if you were so inclined.

The NZRU screens first XV egg ball over here too. I really don't think that it could possibly rate better than ASB Prem games do.

Pretty sure the NZRFU pay for sky to screen those games. So unless NZF is willing/able to throw some money at broadcasting the national comp then the comparison isn't really fair.

First XV rugby would destroy ASB Prem in the ratings. It's a little sad, but it would absolutely be so.

It's not sad at all, it's the reality of being in a country where your sport isn't number 1. The same would apply in reverse if you were a rugby fan in Spain, or the US, or England - or, anywhere else in the Universe.

Sky does this every time a rights package is up for negotiation. It's their standard tactic.

Should be easy to subscribe from New Zealand to beIN Sports Connect which is the online only version of BeIn Sports Australia.

Just fool them into thinking you are in Australia with a DNS or VPN service.

Then subscribe here:

http://www.beinsportsconnect.com.au/newCustomers/?utm_source=HTSPage

Subscribe on a monthly basis.

If you want to try it, first month is only $AU 10

Exchange rate is still quite good with the Aussie dollar ($AU 10 is $NZ 11)

After the first month, the regular subscription is $AU 16.99 or $AU 150 per annum

This is much more attractive in pricing than foxsoccer2go at $US 19.99 per month ($NZ 30.35)

What you get:

Watch beIN SPORTS CONNECT wherever you have internet access on your laptop, desktop computer or mobile device.

+ 24/7 beIN SPORTS channel
+ Access to additional live games
+ Viewer’s Choice
+ Interactive TV schedule
+ On-Demand games & highlights
+ Stream to your TV with Airplay

Latest update on their football offerings:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeIN_Sports_(Australia)#Football

beIN SPORTS football rights include:

beIn Sports have taken over Setanta in Australia after Setanta went bust late last year.

BeIn Sports Connect is unique to Australia and replaces the old Setanta Plus service which was the only online-only sports streaming service in the world offered by Setanta and again was unique to Australia.

So I went with Fox Soccer 2 Go (http://www.foxsoccer2go.com/), lucky I signed up to everything before the NZ dollar dropped.

But I have UnoTelly (https://www2.unotelly.com/) and use a VPN so that I'm in the States, then I signed up for a year. Has a lot of football and hoping it will have the A-league again this year. (Bonus it has the NRL as well). It also comes with apps, so set yourself in the US app store and I have it on my phone and iPad.

Depending on the game, sometimes you don't have to even turn the VPN back on to watch the game through the app.

Big Pete 65 suggest the following instead of UnoTelly, but I haven't used them so can't swear by them. Have used UnoTelly for two years with Netflix and had no problems. https://dns4me.net/

dns4me has confirmed on its Facebook page that it has added foxsoccer2go to the  channels it unblocks. Not all the channels are listed on the dns4me homepage.

dns4me also says that you can request custom url over-rides to unlock channels of your choice.

It is an excellent price at about $NZ 30 per year if you "like" their Facebook page.

They offer a two week free trial and it's run by a Kiwi living in Australia so it's tailored for this part of the world.

I'm going to take up the two week trial soon when I have more time and use it for a trial of some of the US football streaming services like "fubo tv"

Here are all five of the legal online football streaming services from the US outlined and reviewed:

Some as cheap as $US 6.99 per month

There seem to be much cheaper alternatives there to foxsoccer2go.

Compare all five before you make a decision:

http://worldsoccertalk.com/2015/02/27/which-soccer-streaming-service-is-best-for-you-fubo-sling-dishworld-klowdtv-or-fox-soccer-2go/

Sling International also has A-League on top of heaps of European football and is only $US 10 per month. They offer a 30 day free trial.

NB Only FUBO supports Chromecast.

All have on demand.

Bundesliga is migrating to foxsoccer2go this coming season.

Some great options there across the five services.

Scroll down to read viewers' opinions on the merits of the various services.

This website is great for free on demand games and highlights shows from all the major European leagues.

Matches are posted there just hours after they are played.

This morning's EPL, la Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga games are there already.

Has short ads every seven minutes - but they are only 15 seconds long which doesn't bug me too much.

Video quality is very good.

Has EPL, la Liga, Serie A, Eredivisie etc. highlights shows too.

And the major cup and Euro competitions.

Can choose from options at top of video window such as "First Half", "Second Half", "Highlights" etc.

1: The names of the internet providers you subscribe with to watch football.

2: The product you receive (premier league, Euro 2016 etc)

3: The cost -  on a yearly basis (as this will allow me to compare it to Sky Sport)

PLP (every game + copa america this year), Fox Soccer (UCL, Internationals, NRL, A league and more), MLB (every game), NBA (every game), NFL (Every game).

Roughly $200 each, though admittedly it depends on exchange rate.

Basically means I can access better quality games, and every game (rather than just the odd game SKY decides to screen) for $200 less per year than sky offers. If I don't wish to watch a sport in a particular year, I can just not sign up, or even sign up for just half a season for half the price. I can do all of this just as easily as switching on the TV and watching it on Sky. I also no longer have to go through the ritual of going through the EPG finding what to record for the next day, its all on demand automatically - so its actually an easier experience than watching it on sky. Can also watch on demand wherever I want, rather than having to watch on tv if I happened to remember to record it.

The only annoyance is there are still gaps, test match cricket for example. To access this I would need to sign up to sky for $1200 a year at a 12 month contract. Though their new fan pass service could fill some gaps, albeit at an expensive price of $20 per week (and you have to hope that what you want to watch is on SS1-4 rather than a popup channel - plus no on demand service). If they added on demand access to their fan pass service, then it'd be ideal.

This season I only got NBA for the playoffs so only signed up for 2 months for that, but may go the full season next year depending if I feel I have time. MLB I'm thinking of dropping until the playoffs next season, and make do with the daily free game they have on their site, if I feel the need to watch the regular season. The ability to be able to choose and pay for what you want is a big plus.

yep though A league hasn't been added yet. See no reason why it won't be as presumably they have a relationship with Fox in Australia?  But they also have champions league, England home friendlies, as well as age grade world cups etc, so reckon is good value regardless.

Big Pete has posted various other alternatives to fox soccer on the forums too.

You sum up the advantages of going with online streaming services nicely.

It's all about choice, what suits your particular interests and value for money.

I find the range of options for watching football online exciting.

(I'm only interested in watching football plus some one day and T20 cricket and the Breakers basketball - not any other sports really. I watch some tennis when it's free to air. Maybe it's because those are the sports I played as a kid and young adult)

Sky and Vodafone (who have an exclusive arrangement to provide Sky services with their broadband deals) are responding to the competition from online sports and movie providers by offering a broader range of options and discounts.

Last week I helped an older friend who's not so savvy about internet plans and Sky etc. and loves his football (soccer) and a bit of cricket and tennis.

He was paying way too much to get Sky and the internet (broadband and landline) seperately.

He likes Sky TV for the stuff he gets on UKTV, History Channel, news channels etc. as well and prefers that to watching stuff online.

I went around to his place and we phoned Vodafone after I saw their Rugby World Cup special offer.

He's very happy with the package we got from Vodafone under their special offer for one year:

Unlimited broadband (standard) and home phone = $99 / month

Sky Sport free for six months (after that you can drop it or pay full price - or do what I did when I had Sky through Vodafone and instead drop the My Sky and get Sky Sport for half price forever. Vodafone let you choose either free My Sky or Sky Sport half price on their plans. I used a DVD recorder to record stuff.)

Free My Sky for as long as you remain on a Vodafone broadband and Sky deal (past the 12 month offer too)

Free My Sky set up fee (usually $99) - if you don't currently have Sky TV in your house, the installation fee is free too.

"Best Mates" free national toll calls to five nominated landline or mobile numbers.

So for the first six months he'll be paying only $148 / month ($99 broadband and phone; $49 Sky Basic) with the Sky Sport and My Sky free.

I don't have Sky at the moment but I'm tempted by this offer.

If you're already paying say $89 - $99 month  for your broadband and home phone, then it's only $49 / $59 month extra to get Sky with Sky Sport and My Sky from Vodafone - and unlimited data too.

At the end of the 12 month special offer you can change to Vodafone's 80 gb plan with home phone for $89 / month and choose either free My Sky or Sky Sport half price.

You can also get Sky directly from Sky on a special offer currently (until Sunday) which gives you Sky Sport free until the end of the Rugby World Cup (November 1st) and only a six month contract.

Free My Sky until November 2 as well.

New Zealand Football scores live television coverage for ASB Premiership games

New Zealand Football are hailing a deal which will see Sky TV screen live games in the ASB Premiership national league.

The national body are set to announce on Thursday that Sky will carry live coverage of 32 of the competition's 59 matches in the 2015-16 championship.

The premiership will be an eight-team competition this season with Wanderers SC dropping out after two years in the league to provide matchplay for New Zealand's under-20 World Cup squad.

Champions Auckland City and crosstown rivals Waitakere United will meet in the first televised game on Sunday, November 8 at North Harbour Stadium.

Sky will also screen the single-game semifinal series with the former two-legged playoffs now scrapped, and a Thursday night grand final on March 10.

New Zealand Football (NZF) chief executive Andy Martin is set to release a statement on Thursday, hailing the TV deal as "a major step" to raise the profile of domestic football.

"We have repeatedly stated it is our aim to increase the popularity and visibility of football in New Zealand," he said. "To do that, we need to successfully link our exceptionally strong grassroots base to the international game. This is where our top level domestic competition comes in. By getting the ASB Premiership on television regularly, we increase our ability to showcase the pathway available to our players and we can begin to create local heroes ..."

NZF plans to eventually increase the national premiership to 10 teams, playing up to 30 games, double the number in the present two-round eight-team championship.
