I caught some of an interview Mark Watson did with Trevor McKewan (who is the head of Fairfax Sport), it was on yesterday (Sat) at about 6:15'ish, and i think went for an hour. It was a repeat of an interview he did on Sunday last week from what i can gather.

Lots of excellent points and well worth a listen (access the audio bank on Radio Sport for Saturday 21st @6pm)

Some of the points made...
  • The Rugby World Cup is trotted out by our media as the 3rd biggest sporting event on the planet, Trevor McKewan says it wouldn't be in the Top 20.
  • He says stats quoted like 400m watch the Rugby World Cup final is false, he says 31m watched the last one in france and 97% of the 31m were from three countries, the two finalists, England and South Africa, and the host - France.
Anyway, it made for very interesting listening...

Yeah is funny the ridiculous stats that come out about it. Ive heard some say its the 2nd biggest behind the olympics, completely ignoring the football world cup (and yeah as pointed out, about 20 other events)

I dont really see how this is football news though

Allegedly

The crux of the conversation was based on Mark Watson's theory that the Media in general is focused on 4 sports, Rugby, League, Cricket, and Netball, pretty much to the exclusion of all others, and that many jounalists pander to the wants of those sports rather than reporting it.

I thought is relevant regading some of the comments that have floating around here re where Football places during Tv1/3  Sports news section.

Watson said he gets p*ssed off when some recent All Whites news/build up to the big game is leapfrogged by an a possible dodgy hamstring of one of AB's.

He is a High Performance Coach for Triathlon, so mentions that a bit, but...

Quite a bit of football discussion re media coverage etc...

yes it was an interesting interview,

it may just have something to do with football Tegal

the naive (or dishonest) acceptance of the commercial lies told by the IRB by the media and politicians continues to skew the market towards rugby and consequently against all other sports

in turn, this impacts media coverage and funding both from the government and from other sources

media coverage and funding help the sports to which they are given

as someone said in Feverish's Laws/Young t**sers thread - all we want is a decent referee  a fair crack of the whip

I've always been amused by the "3rd biggest sporting event in the world" claim. almost accepted as gospel by nzers though.

The guy they had on Breakfast on Friday or was it the morning, saying that NZ'rs should be 'good sports' during the RWC was trooting out the 'world 3rd largest sporting event' line as well.

I'd think more people watch the Superbowl than probably the whole of the RWC!

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

I'd say you're right. I will watch the Rugby World Cup and all cause I enjoy Rugby. But no way is it the third biggest sporting event.

The NBA finals are way larger than the rugby world cup.

Our media is useless.

Yet only a handful of elite competitions truly attract global audiences. The final match of one of the biggest international sporting events last year, the Rugby World Cup, drew only 33 million viewers globally, according to Initiative. While that was enough for fourth place, it was less than half the audience for the No. 2 and No. 3 events, the Brazilian Grand Prix and the Champions League final.

By comparison, the final match of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, for instance, drew an average live audience of 260 million; the final of the Euro 2004 soccer tournament attracted 161 million viewers.

Very interesting indeed, I dont think I have ever heard one New Zealand TV or Print Journo mention the 33 million figure.

Can ya imagine Andrew Saville admitting something like that?

The 3rd biggest sporting event in the world is the European Football Championshiips.
Live TV audience for the 2004 final was 193m, which dwafs the RWC's 31m a tad.

Seriously? Are NZers that ignorant?

yes, that is the common belief here -behind THE world cup and the Olympics, the vast majority of New Zealanders who care believe that the RWC is next.  The cricket world cup is probably bigger than the rugby world cup though - 8 teams that have a genuine chance of winning it, and the TV audience of India, Pakistan etc.

Edit: Not implying that the cricket world cup is close to the third biggest event.

Yeah, I've always found it funny how the media here don't realise/recognise cricket is a bigger sport globally than rugby, in terms of player numbers, TV audience, and sponsorhip.
