I find the KPIs interesting. More based on increasing A league attendances, memberships and even more interestingly fox sports subscriptions. You'd think an initiative like this would have KPIs like "increased participation in schools" player development in skill areas, or even increased number of players going from school to NYL - A league sides (or even just sticking with the sport after school).

Instead it is:

Shows to me that its more of a concentrated marketing initiative for the A league, rather than a player development program.

Tegal, you're being very selective with your KPI post.

Your screenshot refers to the 2nd strategy of converting participants to fans, hence the marketing focus. The first KPI is all about growing the player base, participation and pathways:

I think it is clever ... both attempting to grow the base create systems for schools to use and tey and turn the player base into fans... a huge issue in Australia if those that played the game actually watched Football would be the biggest code ...

Tegal are you indicating marketing of Football to the player base is somehow something improper or ethically has issues ....

No, I just found it an interesting KPI for a schools development program.

New Zealand Football has yet to realise that there is a thing called "FANS" that you should look after, engage with and encourage.

So far, the extent of our involvement with NZF (over the last 5/6 years) has been "what can you (Fever) do for us so that we don't have to do it..."

Jamie Scott was the most engaged, he understood that there were people interested in watching football.

Phoenix are on a different level in this regard.

Big part of the problem is the reliance on gaming trusts/FIFA/player levy/government grants for funding.  Means they don't actually rely on fans for money (same problem with the ASBP), so actually they don't really give 2 shits because they don't have to.  They basically son't do any research on their market.  Now suddenly they're trying to run an international programme and get sponsorship and that relies on having a fan base and they are so far behind it's just a joke.

The marketing of the A-League via primary school IMO is very clever as they move into high school and then to the world in general... also giving teachers structures and systems to work with as the KPI states will increase playing numbers...

Adding to the primary school push the private school system in Australia especially in Sydney and Brisbane forever has been a rugby [almost only] area is coming under huge pressure from Football and in many ways if off the work of the Mariners, SFC, Roar and recently WSW these articles are worth a read... the trends if they continue will see Football as the major sport played in the private schools within 5 to 10 years and in some of the schools Football has already replaced rugby as the major code.

Football's growing popularity in private schools another sign game is breaking down barriers

Aussie is not perfect but FFA is doing a damned sight better than NZF in my opinion. FFA really are ticking some boxes:

  • a plan for financial sustainability (with a much bigger potential fan and corporate potential base than us)
  • player-base and fan-engagement strategies
  • AFC aligned professional mens league
  • semi-pro mens and womens leagues
  • national knock-out cup competition
  • they are confident enough to take on League and Rules (rugby is largely irrelevant, except for afore-mentioned private schools in Sydney and Brisbane)

It make me wonder, how close do we (football in nz) want to get, or indeed, can we get to our footballing neighbour?

Yes. Going to a couple of WCs on the trot helps that. If were going again, we would be very flush to do some of these things and *shock, horror* have a proper national league that ACFC dream of?

I just dont see how this utopian proper national league would work. How on earth would it be sustainable ? It cant simply work because NZF throw money at it, it has to win the hearts and minds of the public. The world is a small place, the majority of football tragics, if they dont actively support a local team, follow their favourites in the A League, EPL or elsewhere and can do that easily via TV, internet, whatever. What would make me and thousands of others want to watch a national league game  before a game in the A League or other pro league? If you have that answer , then how do the powers provide that? All very well saying they should support the ASB Prem, but by doing WHAT exactly? Thst will translate into bums on seats, selling tv rights, massive sponsorship etc?
