Went on the Wynrs website and read that a young rufer (shanes son perhaps?) and another New Zealand kid are on trial at Werder Bremen.

If he has half as much talent as his uncle Wynton, fantastic news.

Anyone who knows about him or the hamilton boy?

Question, is the wynrs programme the best outlet for young New Zealanders to get a chance to go pro?

To be honest i'd say yes, the nix can only help a few, and one spot is already taken for another two years.

How many WYNRS graduates have gone Pro ?

It'll be Wynton's son, Caleb or something like that ?  ..and the other one will be Marco Rojas.  I used to play indoor against him when he as about 5... Rojas is one hell of a player.

There is a few names of players signing with clubs in the last couple of years, admittedly as juniors, but they are on professional team lists.

The Blackburn kid is a wynrs player, so was the other player who trialled with him. Chris James was, Cole Peverly went to Rostock through them and theres a couple of kids in Japan that have got contracts as youth players.

Seems to be more and more coming through,  is it his contacts?

Personally, I think if you've got a talented kid, compared to the other skills programmes his would be the one to use. He obviously has the contacts.

Is his boy any good any one know?

even if his 'organisation' gets 1 kiwi kid a pro contract/youth contract etc isnt that a good thing for football in this nation? good on him for using his contacts to help give these kids a chance

This is an old argument but if a guy has been in the NZ soccer programme for years and then turns up at wyners for a week suddenly he is a "wyners" player and Rufer is the one responsible for his entire development. There are loads of Kiwis who have gotten professional opportunities overseas through the "normal" channels. As HardNews says, of all of those guys who went overseas, or on his trips, how many are in professional football as a direct result of that?

He used to be when he was younger but I have not heard much in the last 5 years or so, whereas Rojas I have heard discussed as being very good.

James Dean has hit the nail on the head.  WYNRS are quick to claim anyone who ever did a two day course as being a WYNRS produyct if they are a success, and certainly Wynton's contacts do get some interesting junior placements.  However, a week at WYNRS against 10 years in the general NZF system doesn't make someone's success directly attributable to WYNRS.

I can't think of one that at this stage has gone on to a full professional contract, and by now if it was the great program it is proposed to be there should be a generation in their early twenties filling the Olympic side from European or Japanese clubs.

Talked to Stacky during the week, he said he hasn't seen him for three years but back then he wasn't a significant level above his peers.

Reading between the lines I think Jr has over taken Rojas in the quality stakes - that's from someone whose coached these guys a bit

The former Central keeper, Stefan Marinovic, is also in Germany after going through the Wynrs Academy. I think he plays for Wehen Wiesbaden (or something like that).

Both Caleb Rufer and Stefan Marinovic (ex Central and Auckland age group rep) are at Wehen Wiesbaden
Caleb is listed in the u23 squad which plays in the local regional league, Stefan  has played pre season for the first team but would be rated number 3 in the club.

Caleb was at Langenhagan last season

Wehen Wiesbaden came bottom in the Bundesliga second division last year and were relegated down to liga 3 (liga 3 is not part of the bundesliga and is run separately by the German football federation)

Caleb got a brace the other day and set one up in a 5 - 0 win for the reserves.

Good start to have in pre season.

Does anyone know anything about this Michael Fitzgerald chap who is mentioned in the Rufer Jnr article as playing at Niigata? Presume he would be in their reserve team or whatever.

Stumbled across this guy whilst perusing Durante's previous clubs. Anyone heard of him? Plays in the S-League with Balestier Khalsa, who seem to be perennial strugglers although he seems to get regular game time.

Played for Sorrento FC in W.A. before joining Balestier Khalsa for 2010 season.

Congratulations to Central United FC youngster Luis Esteves. Luis who made his first team debut for Central United earlier this season has signed for Portuguese professional team, Clube de Futebol Os Belenenses. The club is one of Portugals oldest and is based in the capital city of Lisbon. The young defender/midfielder was a member of the NZU17 side that attended last years FIFA U17 World Cup in Nigeria. They became the first team from this country to qualify for the Round of 16 at a FIFA World Finals tournament. Esteves joins former Central United teammates Cameron Lindsay (Blackburn Rovers) and Andrew Milne (Glasgow Rangers) as former Kiwitea Street-based members of that NZU17 squad to have signed for professional clubs in Europe.  Full story below...
