It's hard to know what context he said that in, there are things hinting towards coming to NZ "New Zealand will always be my country, and I love the idea of playing for New Zealand one day" It sounds like he must have realized playing for Denmark isn't going to happen anytime soon. Although it was first preference.

FC Midtjylland 2 - 0 AaB. 90 mins for Reid.

That pulls them up the table a bit. They have not had a good year by their standards. I think they finished second last year and qualified for UEFA Cup.

Actually, it was 2008 they had a decent Uefa cup run, including beating Man City in Manchester 1 zip (in which Reid played the full 90)

Looking at the current Denmark squad and its recent form, Reid must be very talented at his age to be anywhere near that side. They finished top of their WC qualifying group, which also included Portugal and Sweden and the squad comprises players from top Euro leagues (Serie A, EPL, Bundesliga, Dutch 1st etc) as well as the Danisch Premier League. Their are about 6-8 players that play at home in Denmark, which probably illustrates its a very respectable and competitive league.
Defensive squad members are from Perennial strugglers Liverpool (agger), Fiorentina, Palermo, Zenit St Petersburg and three from the Danish League (incl one from Midtjylland. This is all according to Wiki.

New Danish All White follows Kiwi heart
By COEN LAMMERS - The Press Last updated 05:00 16/03/2010

World CupHerbert must decide who to take to World Cup Reid changes mind, commits to All Whites Ricki Herbert weighing options after World Cup Socceroos make do with All Whites as farewell All Whites brave in defeat    Blatter defends goal line technology decision Teen Tommy the All Whites new hired gun Mexican standoff just not worth risk Herbert full of pride for Phoenix's All Whites Talented Kiwi committed to playing for Denmark
New All Whites recruit Winston Reid says his decision to play for New Zealand is based on his Maori roots and about following his heart.

The 21-year-old defender from Denmark last week raised eyebrows, both in his old and new homes, when declaring his allegiance to New Zealand.

"It was the hardest decision of my life, but in the end I am a New Zealander and a Maori," Reid told The Press yesterday.

New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert had just about given up on Reid being available for the All Whites.

Reid, who plays for FC Midtjylland in the Danish Super League and has represented his adopted nation at under-19 and under-21 levels, will be in the squad to play Australia in May.

Questioned about the timing of the decision, Reid explained that he had been mulling the issue for six, seven months.

"Honestly, I have been thinking about coming back to New Zealand for some time. It was just a gut-feeling I had. But it was something I needed time with. It needed a lot of time."

Reid left New Zealand at the age of 10 when his mother moved to Europe with her new Danish partner. "I spend half my life in Denmark, so it was a split decision."

"I figured out that New Zealand is the country where I fit best and the country I can best represent, so that's ultimately what forced the decision the way it went."

He also wanted to set the record straight about a recent report in which a Danish magazine quoted him saying he had committed to Denmark.

"It was not what I said. They just asked me whether I was happy in Denmark and I said yes.

"At that stage I had already spoken to Ricki, but if I had decided to play in Denmark, there was no point telling the journalist that I was also talking to Ricki."

Critics on both sides of the globe have questioned the timing of his switch and some football websites even suggested that Reid jumped ship because he was not going to make the Danish World Cup squad.

"If it was just about the World Cup I could have just picked up a phone four months ago to tell Ricki that I want to be in. But that's not the person I am."

Danish football journalist Thomas Damm, of the Herning Folkeblad, confirmed that Reid was always a "zero percent" chance of being in their World Cup team "because we've got plenty of world-class defenders."

Reid agreed: "I was not expecting to go the World Cup with Denmark. All my focus was on the U21 Euros next year."

The defender was not fazed by his critics, but more concerned about his new team-mates when the All Whites go into pre-World Cup camp in May.

"Suddenly, I've got to prove to the rest of the squad that I deserve to be part of the team.

"I just want to get on a pitch with those guys and show them all the hard work I've put in over the years and that I might be able to help them."

Reid told The Press three years ago that his stepfather was a major influence in his career and passionate about him playing for Denmark, but he said that his family and friends in both countries supported his decision.

"They just want me to be happy."

His clubmates are also supportive, but the general Danish public struggle to understand why one of Denmark's hottest young prospects would prefer the 80th ranked team from the end of the world over one of Europe's prominent footballing nations.

"I had to explain to a few people that sometimes you have to follow your heart and your gut feeling. And that's what I'm doing."

Reid visits his father and wider family in Auckland each year. He said his ties with the country and his whanau remained tight even though he cannot recall which tribes his Maori parents belonged to.

The decision to don the white strip was about more than just football, it was also about where he belonged.

"After my career is finished, I'll probably go home and do something with football down there. New Zealand has always been my country and I miss it a lot, even though I'm up here and have a really good life."

That may be a while because Danish media reports link Reid with Serie A teams Fiorentina, Palermo and Sampdoria.

Even FC Midtjylland's website predicts that he will be the next big-money transfer to bolster the club's coffers.

Read this and you cannot knock him for making the decision at this stage before the warm ups and world cup tournament.

Never sounded like a RB to me - just a right footed CB that can play RB at a stretch like Siggy. Often right footed CB's make decent RB's though and we don't have many other options there.

still think he will be more than capable of playing there.

but if he can't I'd suspect he'll be a certainty to start in the back 3 anyway.

something like

                            Paston
                Reid     Nelsen  Siggy
                            Vicelich

  Bertos                 Elliott                      Lochy

this comment i enjoyed ...

"Hello and welcome

As the other guys mention Reid is a decent centre back. He's dominant in the air and his physical strenght is remarkable ( 90 kilos pure evil ). He has an acceptable speed, but is imo definetely not fast enough to be a great right back.
Reid is of course still young (21 years old) and his lack of experience sometimes results in some rather stupid mistakes. However since the experienced danish centre back Martin Albrechtsen arrived his mistakerate has dropped a lot, and he has been one of our best perfoming players in the spring so far.
I'm absolutely sure that Reid is being sold to a club in one of the big european leagues (most likely Italia) within the next 2 years. He's one of our biggest talents, and even though he's already perfoming well he will be even better when he gets more experience!"

Yeah, i like that above comment too.

If the case about Reid is correct, then it may be that we should look at Duncan Oughton as our RB. He would be better as an RB than a defensive midfielder. One thing about the US football system, is that they do train their defenders to be solid, strong and organised at least.

Duncan Oughton can be our Gary Neville in the team. The years in Columbus Crew should count for something about him. I hope that he gets a call for preparation training camp. Him at Arron Scott (still can't understand why he has fallen off the pace). I hope that there are second chances in camp.

I wonder if they separate them three groups and tell which groups gets to go to the world cup and which one don't go like American Idol after the camp training . . . it would be brutal any which way.

here's another. quite useful ...,

"-After following FCM and Reid for many years I would like to make some objective comments on Reid's skills and position and I am sure he will strengthen your team after seeing some of the All Whites WC qualifying games.
-Reid has a lot of experience and has already played 88 games for the A-team and would have played +100 if it wasn't for a knee ingury in the first game in 2009, which kept him out the whole spring season.
-Reid has a natural talent for positioning himself on the pitch and is very strong "one on one" (a general attribute for FCM players) and he seems to lift himself to a higher level when playing important games such as EUFA Cup.
-He has a strong winning attitude and he gives more than 100%, hence sometimes it happens that he becomes to aggresive (he just wants to win), but I do not see this as a negative attribute as most international players have this winning attitude and we see them making wrong judgements. (Beyond what we have seen from Reid).
-As mentioned his strength is centre back but he is also used as attacker in all standard situations like corners, as well as moved up front as target man the last 10-15 minutes if the team is losing. This counts both for FCM and the Danish youth team.
-I have seen Reid play a few games for the Danish U21 team as right back and this he managed well, but the first half he was a little too defensive for a modern right back, but this was corrected in second half and he made some good runs and passes into the goal area.
-I would say he can play a right back but his talent and skills will be far better utilized as centre back.

All the best for the World Cup and imagine if the All Whites come 2nd in their group and Denmark wins their group, New Zealand and Denmark will meet in the 16th final, which I find an interesting thought."

Mmmmmm m m . . . there is a large gap between U21 European Champs to World Cup Final Tournament.

I am sure Siggy would look at RB at U21 but that does not mean we would use him in that position for full A internationals against top 70 ranked national teams. . . . . needs more exploring. It would be nice if Ricki has a wee chat with the U21 coach to get some extra thoughts to Reid's potential. He doesn't to have believe what is being said, but it would be good to have a feel about what can make Reid tick.AllWhitebelievr2010-03-28 21:25:04

Soccer: Reid all about it
By Michael Brown
4:00 AM Sunday Mar 28, 2010
"Ricki Herbert sees Reid as a central defender first and foremost." Photo / Getty Images

It's all hypothetical, of course, but Winston Reid is valued at 1.25 million on the transfer market.

That's not a lot by world standards - Cristiano Ronaldo was sold to Real Madrid last year for an astonishing 94 million - but it is a significant sum for a New Zealand player.

All Whites skipper Ryan Nelsen is rated New Zealand's the most valuable player on transfermarket.co.uk at 3.5 million while Rory Fallon is reputedly worth 1.5 million, Chris Killen 1 million and Chris Wood 600,000.

It's not known how these estimates are assessed but it shows how significant it is for Reid to throw his lot in with New Zealand.

At 21, the centre-back is a player of enormous potential. He made his first team debut with FC Midtjylland in the Danish Superligaen at 17, has played for the Danish under-18, under-20 and under-21 sides and was considered an outside chance to make the Denmark squad for June's World Cup.

He's already been linked with Italian Serie A clubs Fiorentina, Palermo and Sampdoria and expects to be playing in one of the top European leagues sooner rather than later. . . .

Nice 2-1 win at Odense who are title contenders. Reid had a head in the winning goal. He gets involved  a lot. Had plenty of defending to do in this game as Odense looked to win the game to go top.

I saw 30 minutes of the first half and all the second half at www.atdhe.net/index.html
It started at 1pm Ontario time.

Their next game on friday morning 1am NZT should be online somewhere as well. Maybe a bit early/late for you.

There are a few interesting comments in this danish article re how Reid might fit into the AWs. Seems to include comments from Herbert, but not entirely clear from the translation. Did Herbert really say "he is obviously in combat". I hope so!

It seems that Ricki is leading towards sticking with three defenders.

Well good on him. It has recently commented that it seems to be an increasing trend is for a sweeping three central defenders backline in Europe and only a bit of a English/Northern European mentality of footballers to have the mental ease of comfort of having 4 defenders are needed.

All good because our defenders has been adapting well to the lateral movement nature of it.

The only real concern can be is the covering nature of the midfielders but with an extra player pushed up either in the midfield or forward, most opposition can't venture too far up the front without losing numbers behind.

The midfield has to be organised, in regards to the depth away from the defence and how much distance between the forwards and defenders. I wouldn't have all the forwards too stretched, only one forward required to push to defence line of the last man. But the other two forwards can be deep forwards providing extra passing options for midfield especially with counterattack.
