That wouldn't prevent him from playing for New Zealand.

Unless I'm mistaken, yes it would because a player can only change nationality once. He's already played for NZ age group teams so if he plays for USA he won't be able to change again.

I don't see anything wrong with what he's saying. He's just saying he has the option to play for the US if they want him to. It's obvious to all that they won't, but nothing wrong with reminding NZ football he's keen to play for the AWs.

He's played for the U20s so if he's not keen to make himself available for NZ then perhaps that might have been the time to raise it.

The reason I said he hasn't thought this through is either he thinks he has a chance to make it with the USA, which I think we'd all agree is a little over-ambitious considering where he's at in his career, or he's trying to force the hand of NZF, which I personally don't like, or he's just been a bit naive, which I think is probably the case.

He says it's going to be a hard decision but really it's not when one country isn't going to pick you.

He never said he's not keen to play for NZ. Someone has asked him if he'd play for the US if asked and he's said he's not sure. I think that's understandable considering he's spent a big portion of his life there. Nowhere in that article does he say he realistically thinks he has a chance of playing for the USA. I'm not sure what he's expected to say - the reporter was just digging for a story and made a headline out of nothing.

Oh yes, that slipped my mind. You are absolutely correct.

Off topic. I find it strange that the coach can be any nationality and nobody cares. Who came up with that rule? It's wrong.

It's not wrong. There are numerous benefits, and no real disadvantages. It's good for developing countries, being able to bring in top coaches is helping many smaller/weaker nations establish themselves in the game. More countries becoming more competitive is a good thing imo.

So I got a theory about this lack of playing time. Not based on anything I've been told so take it with a grain of salt.

Recall that Totori had a contract extension clauses based on appearances? Well against Sydney, Boyd was ready to come on in the 70th odd minute until Burns scored. The substitution never went ahead. He wasn't even used as a time wasting substitution as Cunningham and Brockie came on instead. Now if you were wanting to try win a game, Boyd would probably have been the best option on the bench. Hence the planned sub. But then why wouldn't you use him to time waste?

It could be possible that Boyd has some kind of contract extension clause, where if he makes enough appearances, he'll get an upgraded contract. Maybe the club doesn't want that to happen now (remember they have to navigate a salary cap), and instead have offered a fresh contract at presumably on lesser terms/money.

This would explain what some players told a poster (forgot who it was) post game in Auckland.

But then again, I could be well off the mark.

Can't it just be that Ernie doesn't rate him as highly as the other options he has?  He does see these players practically everyday in training.

Boyd suits the style of game we are playing more than both Cunningham and Brockie.

Also, he's scoring regularly in the reserve squad so deserves a crack.

IMO there must be a little more to it than we know.

I would argue against that by saying Caira left and that freed up some pro rata cap space and Brockie is about to leave and that would free up some pro data cap space.

On the flip side, you could be right in that the size of the extension could be significant enough whereby they need to wait for a Brockie to leave first for that cap space to become available?  Either way, it's a bloody interesting theory.

Yeah but you'd assume they will fill those spots next year.

Yes they will but at less of a cost. I.e, if Boyd gets an extra 30k and Brockie is a 200k cap hold, you sign the replacement for 170k so Boyd gets his 30.

But what if they want a player that costs $200K? Every dollar matters.

Owned by a Fan or Fanny Club I'd better.

Absolutely (as the Perth case shows). One could assume the likes of Riera and Moss may also have upgraded contracts too. One could assume the extra cash comes from the soon to be departed cap hold Brockie was going to have. The Riera signing I suspect could be a healthy upgrade unless it's a rollover of a healthy upgrade he got off season just gone... Either way, your point certainly remains

If I was Tyler Boyd I would be on a plane at the end of the A-league season.....direction Amsterdam airport. I would be knocking on Ryan Thomas's door and asking if he could sleep on his couch for a while. Then I would visit every mid/lower  table team in the Dutch 1st Div and ask for a trial.

IMO he has the skills to  play at that level...maybe not straight off but he could get lucky and get signed. He is still a bit of a rough diamond but training and playing in Holland would transform him IMO. The other option is to stay at the Nix and watch Krishna and Burns tear it up every weekend. Sounds like Ernie is on the hunt for a striker next year.....that puts Boyd further down the pecking order. If you 19 you need to be playing.

He should probably call in advance.

Also I've seen it recommended on here for other players to crash with Ryan Thomas so it might end up a byo bedding deal pretty soon.

Bit weird to mention your religion in a post-match interview though ...

That performance to me showed he's been working really hard in training - last season there's no way he would have scored those goals as he would have desperately tried to get onto his right foot. That one-footedness was the big thing holding him back from breaking out and being a really good dangerous player. So kudos to him and the Nix training staff because now he looks comfortable on both feet and he's going to rip some defences apart if given the chance.

Boyd in that game and last season is like day and night for me.

I do believe that Boyd doubled his goal scoring tally from the last two seasons in half an hour last night, He never looked anything like composed finished in the past.

If the rumours about contract conflicts are true maybe we actually ought to give him more money or whatever it is he wants.

Edit: yep 2 goals in in 2 seasons and 44 appearances with 1590 minutes

This season 2 appearances 32 minutes and 2 goals.

He started out as a kid. Then he basically got asked to shoulder much more than he should have because the team was in a nose dive. Add to that he's always been more a wide player who cuts in than a striker and then the fact that the team is better across the board, and he showed a lot of unrealised potential, and has been dynamic in the ASBP and... no surprise and those stats don't really show how good he is as a player

It's possible he won't be as consistently good as his showing yesterday and that he won't get the calls, but we can hope he does! He also was really good against Adelaide away one year, and had a pen saved by Galekovic, which might have given him a bit of confidence, but didn't.

Also Ernie's record- Kruse, Burns...we can hope Boyd too...
