Happy for him... but still a long way to go before we can call the move a success... aka Payne etc.

Long way to go for him but its a fantastic chance for him. Can't be many players that have been plucked out of the US College system by English teams. Wonder if Hudson & Taylor have had any part in this?

Isn't there some Nix connection with Sunderland, which is how A-Rod ended up here? One of Greenie's mates is on the coaching staff there or something?

Not sure the Nix have ever had anything to do with him, iirc he turned us down to go the College route.

Probably more likely a Peter Taylor link.

Was thinking more broadly they might just help a kiwi out if they have the connections

Maybe if they get relegated and lose a bunch of players he might find himself on the fringes and playing cup games and the like

Sunderland have history signing "promising" NZ defenders: Jack Pelter went there a few years back. Then came back here & played ASB for Waitakery

Well you never know if you don't try. Isn't this the team A-Rod came out of? At the least it'll be a much better experience than staying here and playing for Auckland City.

He has signed a four deal and is comepting in u23 wich is also known as BPL reserves, they currently sit 6th on the table with everton leading the way with 1 point in front of liverpool.

Would this be a normal contract length for a player of this age at this level? I have no idea but four years seems a very long time for an unproven player

He's on a 2.5 year contract (end of 18-19).

The end of his contract will arrive and he will be released. It'll be fun for him but he wont be good enough

Woudn't you have though this would have happend to Tuiloma but he got a 2 year extension? If sunderland get relegated alot of their top players will leave and this could oppen up botherton's oppertunitys in the first team.

Does anyone really believe this kid is going to kick on from what we have seen with U20s and AWs? I think he will be found out pretty quickly.

So he just bluffed his way through the 10 day trial?

Whilst i don't believe he is that good myself, he has achieved a lot in a short time both in NZ and the states... might surprise us?

I thought he played well and showed leadership in the U-20s. I guess we'll find out.

Exactly.

Actually have a hunch that Brotherton will forge a successful career. Maybe not at Sunderland or ever in the EPL/Championship, but somewhere. Rated on the US College scene, and by the NZF coaching staff - who despite criticism of (sometimes justified) - will know more about spotting/nuturing long term football talent than any of us. You can't write a 20 yr kid off after a couple of patchy games for the national team.

Definitely athletic, and again a hunch that he has a bit of that mental toughness that he'll need to succeed. Good luck to him.

I thought he looked class at the U20s and tipped him for greater things solely on those performances.  No-one is going to say he'll break into EPL first team but just to celebrate the lad scored a contract there and dare other youngsters to dream.  Pretty tough to make it to a top league in Europe via Western Springs and US College.  Pat on the back for Brotherton.  Good luck son

A leader, dominant in the air and comfortable on the ball who can pick out a smart pass. He's an intelligent man off the pitch and is a keen learner. So I think this great. He didn't play u17s for NZ but got selected for the 20's, where he was vice captain/co-captain, and then has already had his All Whites Debut.

He has came a long way in recent years and so it can only be a good thing to get some EPL coaching. I say this is great, and could definitely see him becoming a English Championship defender if he reaches his potential, which he has more chance of doing at Sunderland than playing college soccer.

Congratulations Sam and all the best.

Nice comments by a few. Seems to have progressed rapidly in last two or three years and seems made of the right stuff. If he improves at same rate over next three years he will be at a decent level. Can't understand the people that immediately say he will fail. What satisfaction does that give you?

Its that New Zealand tall poppy syndrome thing. If it puts its head above the pack shoot it down, spit on it, knee it in the groin...... anything to bring it back down to the pack.

I lived in New Zealand for 48 years, I've been gone the last 8 years and still it hasn't improved.

So I've expressed my opinion based on what I have seen of him and you ask what satisfaction does that give me cause I don't rave about him and I'm bringing him down? I made my statement based on what I saw of him in the U20s and an AW shirt which is fair so I don't feel it's an unjustified position nor expressed to make me feel good.

While you posted later that you didn't rate him on what you have seen of him, this was just being a prick without any real analysis given to back up your view at the time. Sure he may not end up being good enough but I'm afraid the people at Sunderland probably have more knowledge than you on the subject and they are paying the bucks to have him there, despite your view. There was no need for the nastiness, try and be nice, you'll feel better.
