Might as well have a page for him, (everyone else has one :)

He was injured in Rovers final playoff match this morning, limped off after giving away a penalty, which was saved.

Hoping it aint too serious

All reports I've read are indicating a medial ligament injury, which can be anything up to a month, depending on the severity of the strain.

Doesn't do things by halves when it comes to injuries, this lad, does he?

My medial ligament strain took 5 weeks this season (but that's after being partially torn two years ago). It can take a while to heal fully, but can be servicable within 3-4 weeks, depending on one's track record in the area.

Bugger,  Ryan Nelsen injured again. Not sure of the cause but he was subbed at half time. It was his first game back after his last injury. Wonder if he will make it up to the east for the Jordan friendly now.

I'd say definitely out for the Jordan game- hopefully right by the playoffs.

Sam Allardyce had this to say: "Certainly to Ryan Nelsen particularly as his knee has flared up again, so that will be some considerable time."

Quite funny, here the media focusses on 'Nelsen in dressing room punch-up', whereas any UK paper is approaching it with 'Diouf is a massive douche, poor Nelsen'.

Diouf approached him like a windmill, love to have seen it. Even better had it been Diouf vs Samba, doubt Diouf would be around to tell the story.

From Blackburn site . . .  aaargh!!

http://www.rovers.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10303~1815566,00.html

"Both captain Ryan Nelsen and Christopher Samba are struggling with knocks sustained a week ago in the win over Aston Villa, and the manager will leave it as late as possible in the hope that they are fit for the match.

"Ryan Nelsen suffered a heavy fall with a bit of a back injury, so it is a particular concern because they are both in the same area.

"But we'll give it until the eleventh hour and I hope they make it for Sunday against Arsenal. Getting the extra 24 hours I hope will be a bit of a bonus for those two and we'll see if we can get them both fit."

For Nelsen, these two games against Bahrain are arguebly the biggest of his career, i am sure he will do what ever is needed to play.

This is his best chance to play in a world cup. Bring on the injections, he will be there!!

If he is out injured should be bring Steven Old in?

Do the rules allow that?

In short, yes the rules would allow that.

Before any preliminary competition the NZF would have sent FIFA general secretariat a provisional list of at least 50 prospective players (last
name, ? rst name, club, date of birth and passport number as well as
the coachs last name, ?rst name, date of birth and nationality.) for the preliminary competition no later than 30 (thirty) days before its ?rst qualifying match of which Steven Old would likely be a part of.

Further players may be added until the day before the qualifying match in question (which how McGlinchey and Fallon was added).

18 players may be entered on the list of players (11 players and 7
substitutes designated). Of which there are designated numbers with captain and GKs are identified.

This list of player on the match sheet must be return to the referee at least 60 minutes before kick off.

If Ryan is out due to injury, then the match sheet can be changed right until 60 minutes before kick off before the match sheet is handled to the ref. This is why we can named 19 players to travel with one player to be omitted from the match sheet on the day. We can travel as much players we would like but on the match sheet of the day, there is only a maximum of 18 players designated with numbers 1-18.

So yes at this stage until the hour before the match, Steven Old can walk right in and have his name on the match sheet to play or be on the substitutes bench.

If the match sheet is already handed in without his name, then it's too late.

If someone injuries himself in a warm-up and the match sheet is handed in already, then you can only replace the first 11 players from someone designated as substitute on the match sheet and still have three changes during the match or if it is an substitute with an injury, then the bench just have to be reduced accordingly with no addition to the bench as a replacement.AllWhitebelievr2009-10-05 12:34:08

A couple of Blackburn players have the H1N1 virus. Anyone know the guidelines for quarantine and travel.

Match report

Sounds like Nelsen had a good game- flicked on for the first goal, scored the second, put someone through with a great pass that should have been another goal, and did some good defensive work. (also got booked!)

haven't found a clip of the goal yet . . .

The goal was a good solid header, nothing spectacular.
He lost his defender and headed in from just outside the 6 yard box

Here's a reference to Sam Allardyce being pissed that Ryan is in the top 3 at Blackburn for goals scored this season (for those that don't know this is the most widely read newspaper in the UK).

You will need to turn to page 47

Still can't help but wonder how legitimate it is.  But for him to go off half-way through a game to make it seem more realistic isn't like him so maybe I'm being over-skeptical.  But in recent years this has happened to him before friendlies all to regularly indeed.

He definitly nadgered his knee yesterday, and it looked pretty serious at the time (in a moment of being over dramatic I told the wife he was out of the WC when it happened).  He played on for a couple of minutes, and managed to walk off, but it didn't look good.

yeah, it looked terrible on the news. One angle of it in particular showed the knee almost bending back the wrong way- gross! Pleased to hear him saying he thinks it is not too serious- although they are still talking of anything from 2 -8 weeks out if it is "only" hyper-extension.

A relief to see Ryan quoted this week that he hopes to be playing again for Blackburn before the end of the month, targeting the East Lancashire derby against Burnley on March 28 for his return. Here is Ryan's interview in the Sun before the first-ever East Lancs derby in the Premier League in October where he describes All Blacks- Australia rugby encounters as "complete yawn festivals" compared to the Blackburn- Burnley rivalry. Burnley fans have been known to set fire to their own stand after losing to Blackburn!

Also of interest to collectors of Kiwi-related football memorabilia: a signed "Attax" trading card of Ryan available on ebay (they will post to NZ):
Trading cards of most All Whites playing in England and Scotland are regularly available on ebay.co.uk or amazon.co.uk for a couple of dollars.
