It says Fallon has endorsed Phoenix City as the official anthem of the Wellington Phoenix.

And something about him being selected for NZ.

And his Dad eats babies for breakfast.

Sounds like Rory has a bit of his old man in him.

Quote from a pre season game

"The competitive nature of the game did not dwindle for a second.

Fallon the Fiery was at the centre of another coming together of the two sets of players, which seemed to start with a bit of gouging and continued with at least one butting.

If it had been a league game, it would probably have ended without at least two players on each side."

RORY RECOGNITION
Posted on: Wed 05 Aug 2009

RORY Fallon has been selected in the New Zealand squad for the crucial World Cup play-off matches in the autumn.

Fallon will initially join up with the squad for a friendly against Jordan in September.

New Zealand are then scheduled to face either Bahrain or Saudi Arabia in a two-legged decider for a place in the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa.

The All Whites reached this stage by finishing top of the Oceania qualifying section.

More to follow...

I will be going to their first game tomorrow against Palace, am hoping that Rory plays a big part.  On another note, c'mon Leeds destroy Exeter tomorrow!

I've just got home from the 1-1 draw between Argyle and Palace.

Rory played the whole game and was the tallest player on the park.  He looked short on pace BUT he did have a very strong, targetman sort of presence and fired off an awesome header that really should have been a goal.  He was denied by a brilliant save from Place's Argentinian keeper.

In the programme while talking about Fallon it gave a nod to North Shore United!

I met Andrew Johnson before the game, he has one sick Bentley and got him to sign my programme.  I recon I might put the pen on ebay and see what I get for it!

Looks like Rory will be the Wynton Rufer of this current crop of All Whites- in terms of lifestyle and religious faith anyway, if not quite yet in terms of achievement and ability.
Just came across this: Rory was chosen by Britain's Daily Mail paper last Xmas for a short interview about his religious faith as part of its Xmas sports coverage.
Apparently, according to Rory, faith in the Lord doesn't necessarily equate to "turning the other cheek" on the field- he's still "strong in the air and in the tackle."

Yeah saw that earlier. Great for Rory - more headaches for Ricki, which is just what we want I think.

Heres a fun fact - From our top four strikers, the one who hasn't scored for the longest is: Shane Smeltz!

The one we would assume is an automatic start
Fallon - Today
Killen - 20 Sep
Wood - 15 Sep
Smeltz - 13 Sep

Who would have thought??

yes he is. he had been starting and scoring a few in the lead up to the Bahrain game, was rested for the game immediately after he got back (not for form reasons) and started again in the weekend in the abandoned game via Barnsley.

Rory played the whole game on Tuesday 8th Dec. vs Swansea in the 1-0 away loss and sounds like he was involved in some goalmouth action, having a goal-bound header well-saved by the goalie and creating chances for others.

Plymouth have removed Paul Sturrock as manager and replaced him with his assistant, former England great Paul Mariner, who played 130 games for Plymouth in his youth 1973-76 before moving to Ipswich. Sturrock is shuffled downstairs to a "business development role."
Hopefully Plymouth's fortunes will improve and Mariner can use his extensive contacts to sign some good players (he also has a lot of contacts in the USA, having been assistant at MLS club New England Revolution for five years) to provide good service to Rory (who Mariner rates I think). See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/p/plymouth_argyle/8405711.stm

Interesting facts:
1.Mariner scored England's goal which took them to the 1982 World Cup in Spain (they had to beat Hungary at Wembley in their final qualifying game and Mariner got the only goal)- 28 years later he coaches a player whose goal takes his country to the Finals for the first time since 1982 and whose father coached at the '82 Finals.
Mariner reminisces about his goal and discusses Rory's recent clincher in this major Daily Mirror interview: http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/columnists/mike-walters/Wally-meets-Former-England-hero-Paul-Mariner-article227101.html

2.Mariner played several games for North Shore United in Auckland in the late-eighties after the end of his career in England. According to North Shore's Wikipedia page, he also married a girl from Devonport.

3.He was also a member of an England B team coached by Bobby Robson (his then club coach) which played three games against the All Whites in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland in June 1978 (4-0, 3-1, 4-0). Mariner scored in the last game in Auckland. See: http://www.rsssf.com/tablese/eng-b-intres-det.html
(scroll down to 1978)

Mariner has appointed Bobby Robson's former assistant at Newcastle United, John Carver, as his first team coach. Carver's last job was at Toronto FC in MLS in the States the last few years where he coached another All Whites striker, Jarrod Smith (son of cricketer Ian).
Plymouth play Newcastle in the third round of the FA Cup on Jan 2.

The Pilgrims have succeeded with their project to have Home Park named one of the 15 venues for England's 2018 World Cup bid. They are already planning to increase the capacity from 19,500 to 27,000 but will build a 46,000 seat stadium if England are given the Cup. Report from local Plymouth media on Paul Mariner's first game in charge on Saturday. Apparently he's trying a new 4 3 1 2 formation with Fallon and Mackie up front. This seemed to become more effective as the second half of the 2-0 away loss to Preston progressed. Fallon created one good chance with a clever knock-down and had a firm close-range header well-saved. The Pilgrims have now lost their last four games and failed to score. Apparently that's not so much the fault of the strikers but a lack of service from the midfield/wings. Plymouth remain second-bottom in the Championship.

The Pilgrims have also been slapped with a transfer ban over unpaid debts, meaning they currently can't sign any new players but Mariner and the club are confident this will be sorted out by the transfer window opening in January. See:

Check out the latest "World Soccer" magazine (January) in the shops (e.g. Whitcoulls):
Dedicates a whole page to Rory and the All Whites' win ("Headliners" section, p. 20).
Half the page is nice photo of Rory celebrating his goal and half is nice positive story of the win.
Probably first time the All Whites have attracted such coverage since 1982...
Is the second item in the "Headliners" section and "World Soccer" is the biggest international football mag in English.
Another little piece on the All Whites nearer the back of the mag written by its Oceania correspondent Paul Moon (who lives in Oamaru and is also a great source for football memorabilia). Paul has been the mag's Oceania correspondent for over twenty years- which I'm sure used to piss off the Aussies when they were still part of Oceania and a Kiwi used to write all the coverage. Thus reports on the NZFC and O-League still feature, along with the A-League, in the globe's biggest English-language footie mag!

Subbed off at HT today.  Argyle lost 2-1 to fellow strugglers Reading and sit 9 points (with a game in hand) inside the relegation zone.  Not looking good.
