Forgot about Crocombe, but he may be in the mix. Although he's probably down the pecking order at the moment based on form, or lack there of.

It's a bit hard for a keeper to try and save face when the 10 others in front of him on the pitch are pure sharke...

Good news for Almere. They go up to 2nd with a 2-0 win over NEC (6th). Top 2 automatically promoted.
Woud in goal.
De Graafschap (3rd) lost 3-0, and NAC Breda (4th) drew 1-1.
All the teams have played same number of games, and there is 7 rounds left. Going to be a tight finish for the 2nd automatic promotion spot.

Game at Roda JC (8th) postponed. Presume Covid related.
Unfortunately De Graafschap, played and won to replace Almere (3rd) in 2nd spot.

Edit - had that wrong. From Flying Kiwis.

"Albeit only for a few days because snow forced the abandonment of Almere’s Easter Monday clash with Roda JC with the scores tied at 0-0 in the 67th minute. Woud had made an excellent 1v1 save in the first half to keep things even while the sun was still out. Then the snow began to fall heavily and the teams had to disappear off to warm up in the sheds while the pitch staff tried to make things playable... but the downfall was too much. By the time it stopped, 45 minutes later, it was still gonna take ages to clear what had already piled up. The game will apparently be completed another day. That allowed De Graafschap to pick up another win to leap ahead of them again. But NAC lost. So that was handy."

Not a great result as Almere lose 3-0 at Go Ahead Eagles (5th). Woud in goal.
Almere 4th, 3 points behind De Graafschap (2nd), who have a game in hand. Top  2 automatically promoted, next 6 sides into playoffs.
4 games to go for Almere. They play De Graafschap next in a huge game.

Heartbreak for Woud & Almere (4th). Concede in 95th min (last kick of the game) to be held to a 2-2 draw at De Graafschap (2nd).

Massive blow to their chances of automatic promotion with 3 games left (against lower table Jong sides of Ajax, Utrecht & PSV). With a win they would have been only 3 points behind De Graafschap who have a tough road trip to top of the table Cambuur (already clinched the title) next week. So by next weekend they could have been equal on points with De Graafschap, and Almere have a superior points difference. The top 2 get automatic promotion.

Now they are 6 points behind De Graafschap, and need them to lose 2 of their last 3 games.

So highly likely Almere will now be in the lottery of promotion playoffs, which starts with 6 Eerste Divisie teams, then some bottom Eredivisie teams.

So unfortunately todays' draw a massive opportunity lost.

Good clean sheet to keep, although Ajax are 16th because obviously any player who really steps up goes to the first team, today they had young striker Bryan Brobbey. The 19yo is rated as one of the best young strikers in Europe, and is absolute unit as well (his quads are ridiculous). Trouble is, he reached a contract impasse at Ajax so is leaving at the end of the season on a free to Bundesliga title contenders RB Leipzig, so he’s been left in the reserves a bit more by Ajax. He’s a Dutch U21 international and averages an Eredivisie goal every 60 minutes, as well as having 3 Europa League goals, but Woud managed to keep him scoreless and also made a big one-on-one save to deny him.

Ajax also brought on 20yo Lassina Traore, who has a decent 7 goals and 4 assists in just 555 minutes (7 starts, 4 subs) in the Eredivisie, and another highly rated teen in Sontje Jansen, top scorer at the 2019 U17 World Cup. So a bit more than your typical 16th placed Eerste Divisie side would expect to throw at you.

One game left and Almere (4th, 74 points) still a chance of grabbing the 2nd automatic promotion slot off De Graafschap (76 points - drawn their last 3 games). Go Ahead Eagles (3rd, 74 points) currently edge Almere on GD.

Unfortunately Almere (4th) miss their shot at automatic promotion, and go into the playoffs. They will first play NEC Nijmegen (7th).

This morning, Woud in goal as Almere (75 pts & GD +27) drew 1-1 with PSV II. As it turned out Almere would have had to win by 10 goals, to grab 2nd spot and automatic promotion.

Go Ahead Eagles (a win) & De Graafschap (a draw) both ended up on 77 points after this morning's games. Go Ahead Eagles (GD +37) finish 2nd on GD, and are automatically promoted. De Graafschap finished the season with 4 draws, to give away 2nd spot.

De Graafschap (3rd), and Almere are joined in the playoffs by NAC Breda, Volendam, NEC & Roda JC. All the Jong sides were well down the table.

Woud's old club Willem II are still in danger of slipping into the Eredivisie's relegation playoff spot. So an Almere & Willem II playoff matchup is still possible.

Hopefully they can pull through to that promotion playoff, and it would be even tastier if it’s against Willem II, given it will be his return to the club he made his professional debut. Also, hopefully fans can attend, as Dutch government gave 16th May as the date for possible return. If they are allowed fans, it could mean Woud might receive some stick, as he angered Willem II fans with his comments in November, before he signed permanently. He said in an interview that he doesn’t care how Willem II are doing, as it’s not his club anymore, so some fans were questioning his attitude and were quite happy that he left permanently, while others thought he was better than their current first choice and it was a bad decision to sell a promising young goalkeeper. So plenty of potential storylines should they meet in the playoff.

Unfortunately it all went horribly wrong for Almere (4th) against NEC (7th), in the promotion playoff. A 0-4 loss. Woud in goal.

De Graafschap (2nd) also lost against a lower ranked team, 2-3 to Roda JC (8th).

3rd playoff game NAC Breda (5th) beat Volendam (6th), 4-1.

Looks like NEC, Roda JC & NAC Breda are through to next stage (semis). But not sure about other semi finalist??  Almere to playoff against  De Graafschap, for that 4th semifinalist spot??

Unfortunately Almere is actually confirmed out of the playoffs now (as is De Graafschap). So sadly another season in the 2nd tier for Woud.

Is a relegation/promotion playoffs series now, and the 16th ranked team in Eredivisie (could be Willem II), will join NEC, Roda & NAC in the semis.

It is rather unfortunate, but another season in the Eerstie Divisie should mean less pressure on him than the big lights of the Eredivisie, as, even though he turned 22 in January, he is still relatively young for a goalkeeper. He still needs to develop, and an extra season in the second tier as (one would hope) one of the better teams should do well for development and morale, as opposed to going up and potentially being put to the sword by the big 3 (Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord) and the media scrutiny that would follow. Like, he made a penalty save in the first half today, but then also went to punch a cross in the driving rain but misjudged it and put it straight up, had to scramble it clear of going in and they scored from the resulting ball into the box. In a relegation dogfight that might be enough to get you dropped, or at least kill your confidence, but if you do that in a 4-1 win you’ll learn the same lesson with less of the pressure, so every cloud has a silver lining.

Probably a lot of truth in what you say, but Woud does have some previous experience in the Eredivisie with Willem II, so a jump to the top flight wouldn't be a complete shock to him.

Almere do sound a pretty small club though (unlike Roda, NAC etc) with limited resources, so if they ever do go up sounds like will be a season of struggle for sure.

From Flying Kiwis.

"And Woudy’s new manager at Almere City is... Gertjan Verbeek! Former Adelaide United manager in the A-League, until covid came and he went back home. Funny coincidence. Almere fell short of promotion in the playoffs despite being in contention for an automatic raise for most of the season – finishing with an interim gaffer after sacking Ole Tobiasen during a dull spell. Verbeek’s had a mixed career but he did win the KNVB Cup with AZ back in 2013 and so his reputation is definitely above second tier footy. Good get for AC.

Up Next: Figuring out how to get promoted next time"

Full 90 for Woud as Almere City continue their poor start to the season with a 2-1 loss at VVV Venlo.

Almere with only a solitary point to show from their opening three fixtures as they lie in 19th (of 20) in the Eerste Divisie.

I see Ole Tobiasen - who managed to get Almere off to a flyer last season before being given the flick after a mid-season blip, is now the assistant manager at Heerenveen too.

Top of the table Roda JC away next. Almere sadly don't look like being in promotion contention this season, without a big form reversal. Last season already looking like a huge missed opportunity, when they so narrowly missed out.

Still early doors, and I think there is no relegation this season (none last season either), but Eerstie Divisie is quite weird in that they have four different periods, so you can be bottom at the end of the first period (9 games), but if you win the second  (or any) period (next 10 games) you’ll get a place in the promotion playoffs. Similarly, if the same team wins two periods it goes down to the next team who hasn’t won one yet, so plenty of opportunities.

Last season Almere guaranteed playoffs in the second period as the were second behind the team that had already won the first period. 6 teams make the promotion playoffs, plus the 16th Eredivisie team, so only need to get to eighth to scrape the playoffs, or have a 9 game purple patch to qualify from a period.

That is weird and had no idea. You also have the 4 Jong (youth) sides of AZ, Ajax, PSV & Utrecht who can't participate in the promotion playoffs. AZ II (Jong) for example are currently sitting 4th, so the 9th placed team would come into the 6 team playoffs in their place. Top 2 sides being automatically promoted.

So yes I was probably hasty to write off Almere, so early in. But being such a small club, they won't likely get, as many chances as good as last season (being in the top 2 for much of the campaign) to achieve promotion.

Yikes, Woudy. To make matters worse Almere City ended up losing this one 3-2 (although their second goal came in second half stoppage time tbf). He does have a wonky error in him from time to time though in the interests of fairness he also made an absolute ripper of a save on 55 mins, tipping a low thumper onto the post and away to safety.

This loss merely continues the poor form that AC have brought into the new season, only two wins from nine having been hoping for promotion as things started. Everyone else is dropping points this season too which helps, they’re only nine points off top, but it’d be nice if they turned things around sooner rather than later.

Hate me all you want for saying that, but for someone who seems so good at times, to make multiple 'mistakes' I don't see in a year of watching 12 year old girls football, it makes no sense.

After the Olympics and seeing this... I really hope he is third in line of the guys for the upcoming All Whites game (and 4th if Sail was available).
