Another clean sheet.

In goal for a 2-0 win over AZ II (19th).

Almere (still unbeaten after 11 matches) clear at the top by 5 points, but they have played 2 games more than the 2 teams immediately below them.

Be nice if they can get promoted, and then maybe the loan move from Willem II becomes permanent.

Woud in goal as Almere City emphatically lose their unbeaten record, getting trounced 7-2 at Cambuur (3rd).

Almere are 2nd now, De Graafschap a point ahead in top spot. Though Cambur 2 points behind Almere, have a game in hand on both teams above.

Top 2 teams will be promoted to the Eredivisie.

Daniel Arzani (age 21) with the goal for Utrecht Jong. Looks like he's floating between their 1st & 2nd teams. It was his first goal in a competitive game since leaving Melb City.

Arzani an interesting comparison to say how NZ's young players like Singh & Cacace are going. Though he did have a bad injury basically upon arrival at Celtic.

Almere were 3-0 up after 10 mins!

Almere 2nd only on GD, from 1st placed Cambuur, though Cambuur have played a game less.

Looks like no real winter break for the Dutch 2nd tier this season - presumably as season started later than normal due to Covid. Hopefully Woud wraps up well between the sticks through the bitter Jan-Feb months.

Reality check for Almere as they seek promotion this season.

Get beaten 4-1 at home in Dutch Cup by top tier VVV (15th in Eredivisie).

Woud in goal.

Of interest Woud's parent club Willem II are currently 3rd last (16th) in the Eredivisie. Interesting scenario if they got relegated, and Almere promoted!

Top 2 are promoted.

In goal for a tasty battle between 2nd (Almere) & 3rd (De Graafschap).

Almere grab a 90th minute goal for a 1-0 win. 2nd game in a row they grab a late winner.

They go 8 points clear of De Graafschap

Cambuur with a game in hand are top, equal on points with Almere, but with a much better GD.

Top 2 sides are automatically promoted. Season at half way point.

Woud's parent club Willem II, remain 1 spot above the relegation zone in the Eredivisie.

10th clean sheet of the season too. Excellent return for a club that looks like it could well be stepping up to the Eredivisie.

Conversely, parent club Willem II sitting 2nd bottom in the Dutch top flight. Could be interesting if one goes up and the other goes down. Think his contract with Willem II ends at the end of this season too. Although I could be wrong on this one...

Good for him. Lets all hope Almere get promoted.

Nice little skit from this week's Flying Kiwis. 10 clean sheets. Another who's Dutch is maybe a work in progress.

There we go. With Almere City second only on goal difference with a healthy gap between them and third place and the top two spots earning automatic promotion (as well as the following six teams going into playoffs for a chance to face the third-bottom team in the top flight for their place), Michael Woud was gonna have a decision to make if his loan team goes on to get promoted. He’s first choice keeper for Almere and playing great. At Willem II he has only been a backup, with the club signing a new keeper and loaning him out in the summer when they could have given him that chance (understandable, tbf). But it turns out there’s no decision needs to be made because it’s already been made.

Michael Woud has signed a three and a half year contract with Almere City to join them on a permanent basis. Woud had played on five occasions for the first team at Willem II – whose own form has probably made this an even easier choice as they’re currently in the relegation zone themselves after 18 games. As things stand, his new club will be swapping places with his old club.

AC Technical director Teun Jacobs: “Michael Woud has undergone good development since his arrival in Almere. With his reliable performances, he has become a valued player in the squad both on and off the field. From that point of view, we are pleased that we have been able to bind Michael to the club for a longer period of time so that we can achieve our shared ambitions.”

Meeting his old club in the promotion/relegation playoffs still a chance. Willem II currently sit in the relegation playoff spot in Eredivisie.

A few games postponed, and long breaks between games, seem to have done Almere no favours.

Tough ask for them to keep up their amazing form for the whole season especially against teams the likes of De Graafschap and Cambuur who have been bouncing between the Eerste Divisive and the Eredivisie over the years.

But Almere are still in with a shot. Big 4-1 win against mid table side Excelsior.

Full 90 for Woud in goal too.

The win sees them 3rd on 56 points, 1 point behind De Graafschap who have a game in hand.

Also, luckily for Almere, 2nd placed De Graafschap only managed a draw at home to 9th placed Excelsior, which means the gap from Almere in 3rd and De Graafschap in 2nd (and final automatic promotion spot) is now just 2 points. The two still have 9 matches left and play each other on the 24th of April at De Graafschap.

Good to see the emergence of several young Kiwi Keeper's getting a go for their clubs.

Woud is probably the most established one at present, but even the likes of Nik Tzanev who's just starting to get his opportunity at AFC Wimbledon in League One and then Oli Sail at the Nix. Excellent to see another good crop of young keepers getting the opportunity to play week in, week out. Bodes well for the All Whites when we play again (hopefully within the next couple of years!)

It should be interesting to see who Danny Hay chooses as the number one going forward, as Marinovic had the position locked under Hudson and also started the Ireland game which Hay described as his “first choice 11”. However since then Woud has had considerably more game time than at that time when he was backing up at Willem II, so Marinovic might have his work cut out to get the spot, whether that’s getting ahead of Sail or heading back to Europe at the end of the season.

Another thing is that Hay only picked two keepers for that squad when a usual 23 will have three, so suggests he was undecided on who is next after those two, be that Tzanev, Crocombe, Sail, Cam Brown etc.
