Thought it was time there was a thread for all the many talented NZ women now playing for overseas clubs and universities.

Motivated in this by noticing just how many darned good female players we have making careers overseas now - and by noting that there are only a couple of women listed under "Kiwi Players Overseas" and they've received no posts for about a year (buried three pages into this forum which no-one reads).

Probably there is enough interest for one umbrella thread for all women overseas rather than threads for individual players.

Please also pass news of this thread on to female football people you may know so they can follow it and contribute.

This is a big year for our women footballers with several now arguably amongst the best in the world and playing in the world's top women's leagues like Germany, Sweden and England, the Olympics on the horizon for the Football Ferns and our teams participating in the  FIFA Women's u-20 World Cup Finals in Japan in August, followed by the u-17 World Cup in Azerbeijan in September.

On Friday morning Ria Percival plays for Frankfurt in the UEFA Women's Champion's League Final against Olympique Lyon:

Watching a live stream- Frankfurt 2-0 down at half-time.

Ria on the bench but her side so poor defensively seems certain she'll see action at some stage.

Olympique Lyon the better team with lots of pace and skill- must be the best women's club side in Europe, even the world...

Great atmosphere in Munich's Olympic Stadium with what looks like a near-capacity crowd, most supporting Frankfurt. Could well be a record crowd for a Women's Champions League Final, maybe even a record for a women's club match in Europe. The Olympic Stadium holds 69,000.

Ria on in 60th minute to add some pace- described by the commentator as "a very, very fast player- she could make a difference..."

Crowd confirmed as 50,000- a record for a Women's European Final and I think for any European women's club match.

Commentator remarks Ria is already making a difference with her pace and helping create more chances for Frankfurt, more balls in the Lyon box...both commentators saying thay can't understand why Ria didn't start the game- "one of those bizarre decisions..."

Still 2-0 at 70 mins and Frankfurt getting forward more.

Fulltime: finishes 2-0 and Lyon deserved winners for the second year in a row. As the commentators on Eurosport sum up, Frankfurt paid the price for adopting too defensive a strategy and not fully utilizing their attacking talent like Percival. Ria's last game for Frankfurt- off to join Amber Hearn at Jena in East Germany next season...

Ria- as far as I know, the first Kiwi to appear in a European Women's Final.

UEFA Women's Champions League Final: FFC Frankfurt v Olympique Lyonnais

Olympic Stadium, Munich: This morning (Friday) 4am NZ Time

Live stream may be available here:

    http://www.vipbox.tv/watch/52427/1/olympique-lyonnais-vs-frankfurt---uefa-womens-champions-league-final-live-stream-online.html

Frankfurt defeated Arsenal Ladies in the semi over two legs 4-1 aggregate with Ria playing the whole game in both legs:

    http://www.uefa.com/womenschampionsleague/season=2012/matches/round=2000291/match=2009096/postmatch/lineups/index.html

FFC Frankfurt have won the UEFA Women's Champions League three times (the record) and appeared in five finals. In 2006 27,000 attended the Final when Frankfurt played Potsdam.

Ria has signed for another Fraulein Bundesliga side, fellow Football Fern Amber Hearn's USV Jena, for next season:

While it was already clear that Ria would leave Frankfurt after this season, it does come as a surprise that she won’t be returning to New Zealand (rumor had it that she was homesick and wanted to return to her home country), but will be playing for Jena instead.

Maybe the fact that her NT teammate Amber Hearn is playing for the club as well?! We are sad Ria is leaving and wish her all the best in Jena!

Yeah, i saw the game live on TV here in Germany(free to air). I would have to agree with these comments about Ria after she came on.

"Commentator remarks Ria is already making a difference with her pace and helping create more chances for Frankfurt, more balls in the Lyon box...both commentators saying thay can't understand why Ria didn't start the game- "one of those bizarre decisions..."

She wasnt doing anything too fancy, actually she was just playing decent football pushed up from wing back(good idea when u are 2 down) played a couple of one twos down the wing or give and go's. she did this three times in the first 10 mins she was on and all 3 times resulted in decent wide play and a decent cross or play into the box. she wasnt doing the finishing balls into the middle, she basically got her job done, delivered the ball to the wide winger and then tracked back into defense.

A couple of times in her spell she had to double time it back to catch up to her attacking opposite as she was taking risks by pushing up. but it was all covered in the end.

    good work Ria.

Latest on the six NZ women playing in the Women's Bundesliga in Germany.

Was Football Fern v Football Fern in the latest round when Frankfurt played Rebecca Smith's title-challenging Wolfsburg,        whilst at the other end of the table, Amber Hearn (Jena) and Anna Green (Leipzig) battle relegation:

    http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/index.php?id=11&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=1661&tx_ttnews[backPid]=10&cHash=a72956e0b0

There was also joy for Football Ferns skipper Rebecca Smith as Wolfsburg beat Ria Percival’s Frankfurt 1-0 with a second half penalty to book their place in next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League and set up some final day drama next weekend to decide overall Bundesliga honours.

Ria started and was substituted in the 73rd minute, whilst Rebecca played the whole match.

The result ended Frankfurt’s slim hopes of returning to the Champions League and capped a miserable week where they lost two cup finals including this season’s Champions League final against Lyon.

Wolfsburg are just one point behind leaders Turbine Potsdam and need to better their points haul in the final round of matches next Tuesday morning (NZT). Wolfsburg are away to Essen-Schönebeck while Potsdam, who beat third placed Duisburg 2-0 away from home this morning, are home to bottom of the table Lokomotive Leipzig next week.

Leipzig are in a three way battle to avoid relegation with Anna Green and her team mates keeping their hopes alive with a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich. With Bayer Leverkusen edging Amber Hearn’s USV Jena 3-2, only one of Leipzig (13 points), Leverkusen (14) and Jena (15) will avoid the drop next weekend.

In other German league action Sarah Gregorius was on the score sheet for the second week running, netting Bad Neuenahr’s first goal in a 4-0 rout of Hamburg.

    GERMAN WOMEN'S TITLE DECIDED:

Unfortunately, Rebecca Smith's Wolfsburg had to settle for second in the Frauen Bundesliga after they drew 1-1 at Essen (Smith didn't play) whilst Potsdam annihilated Football Fern Anna Green's Leipzig 8-0 to take the title and condemn Leipzig to relegation. (Anna Green played the whole game).

Wolfsburg still make the UEFA Women's Champions League next season as runners-up.

Damallsvenskan Round 7: Top Teams Tyresö and LdB Malmö Stunned <!--article meta-->

By Rainer Fussgänger – Last week, we discussed the superiority of both reigning champions LdB FC Malmö and Tyresö FF. After a very special Sunday where both favorites lost their games, they are back on planet Earth. Tyresö leads Damallsvenskan after round 7 with 15 points on better goal difference than Malmö and Vittsjö.

AIK vs LdB FC Malmö 2-0
    Attendance: 340
AIK: Jennie Nordin (Nazanin Vaseghpanah) 60’, Elin Bragnum (Clara Markstedt) 93’

If somebody had told the AIK players that their first victory would come when they meet champions LdB FC Malmö, they would not have believed it. Malmö dominated in the first half, and Ramona Bachmann hit the post and the crossbar. Once again, AIK defended almost heroically by going long distances and trying to keep away Malmö’s dangerous forwards from the ball. Nazanin Vaseghpanahs free kick after one hour came into the box and U-19 Swedish international Jennie Nordin jumped higher than all the others and headed the ball at the inside of the post and into the net. That gave AIK wings, and they suddenly seemed to have more energy. They definitely wanted this more than Malmö. When Malmö sent all its forces into the AIK half and there were only a few seconds to go, Clara Markstedt ran away on the right wing and delivered a perfect pass to another U-19 international, Elin Bragnum, and she scored and decided the game. I spoke among others to Jennie Nordin after the game. “It is just incredible. We worked so hard recently. It is beautiful that today we see that it was all worth doing it.”

    Vittsjö GIK vs Djurgården 4-1

    Attendance: 976
Vittsjö: Sandra Adolfsson (Sofie Andersson) 66’, Sofie Andersson (Johanna Andersson) 77’, Kirsty Yallop (Sofie Andersson) 84’, Johanna Andersson (Kirsty Yallop) 86’
Djurgården: Natalia Rickne (Madeleine Stegius) 87’

Vittsjö lost recently against Malmö, 4-1, and in the third round of the Swedish Cup against Division 3 side Rödeby, and some thought that the ”fairy tale” was over now. And Vittsjö had a difficult first half when Djurgården did not give them much space to play their game. But Coach Thomas Mårtensson changed tactics in the second half and made his team attack more using both wings instead of playing central. Djurgården broke down within 20 minutes and is again last.

Previously Ali won the US women's title with Western New York Flash coached by former Cantabrian and All White, Aaron Lines and playing alongside Brazil legend Marta.

Like many top players from the national pro women's league in the USA, the WPS, which is having a one year break, Ali has been forced to find a club in Europe. Last year with a 13-2-3 regular season record, the Flash earned the regular season title and the right to host the WPS Championship Final against Philidelphia. On August 27, 2011, Western New York Flash capped their inaugural season in WPS by capturing the 2011 WPS Championship title 1-1 (5-4) in a penalty kick shootout in front of the largest championship crowd in league history.

Rebecca Smith's Wolfsburg were presented with the German Women's Bundesliga title on the weekend (first title in their history) and stand to bask in more glory the next few weeks, with an unprecedented treble in the offing:

    - German Cup Final v Potsdam on Sunday (Monday am NZT);

    - UEFA Women's Champions League Final v the holders Lyon Thursday next week (Friday am NZT) - Stamford Bridge, London

GERMANY: A division down and Rebekah Stott was an unlikely hero for SC Sand scoring the only goal in a 1-0 away win at second-placed Koln to maintain their push for a place in the Frauen Bundesliga.  Sand – who also have Betsy Hassett on their books – are currently third in the Southern Conference of the German second division, four points off the automatic promotion place with three games to play.

In the Northern Conference, Anna Green and Lokomotive Leipzig are stuck in mid-table.

SWEDEN: Ali Riley has played every minute in Malmo’s opening three matches in the Damallsvenskan.  Malmo – last season’s runners up – are unbeaten but sit in third place on goal difference and trail league leaders Tyreso by two points.  Similarly, Kirsty Yallop has played all 270 minutes for her side Vittsjo, although they have a single win from their first three outings.

    UEFA Women's Champions League:

Olympique Lyonnais crushed Ali Riley's Swedish club Lbd Malmo 8-0 on aggregate in the quarter finals of the competition last month, before overcoming fellow French side Juivsy in the semi finals.  Wolfsburg defeated Arsenal 4-1 on aggregate in the other semi final.

Meanwhile over the Channel in Britain, it seems we only have one rep in England's top women's league these days, Hayley Bowden (Moorwood before her marriage to former All Black Dominic Bowden).

She of course signed for top English club Lincoln Ladies (a smaller town with a big history of success in women's football) in the English Womens Super League last month, having played for Chelsea 2010- 2011. The English women's season only kicked-off mid-April::

     http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22115027

    http://www.lincolnladiesfc.com/news/bowden_signs_for_imps.html

"Winning the 2009 Halberg Awards Sportswoman of the Year. It's just one of her many accolades.

With over 90 international caps, 29-year-old Bowden is New Zealand's most experienced player (Men or women) after she took over Wendi Henderson’s all-time New Zealand appearance record."

Last appeared on May 2nd in a WSL Continental Cup (League Cup) match 1-1 v Arsenal Ladies in which she started:

    http://www.lincolnladiesfc.com/matchesReport/lincoln_ladies_v_arsenal_ladies_02_may_2013_report.html

"Lincoln started this season’s Continental Cup campaign with a well earned draw at home to holders Arsenal.

A point sees both teams share the points in the first of three group games, with Lincoln’s second group game coming away to Bristol on Sunday, as Lincoln bid to further their semi final exit last season."

In another comp. Lincoln went out in the semi-final of the English Women's FA Cup on April 28 2-0, again to Bristol Academy.

Hayley also started in a 1-0 home league loss to Liverpool April 14:

    http://www.lincolnladiesfc.com/matchesReport/lincoln_ladies_v_liverpool_ladies_14_april_2013_report.html

and came on as a sub in a 1-1 draw away to Birmingham: http://www.lincolnladiesfc.com/matchesTeamsheet/birmingham_city_ladies_v_lincoln_ladies_21_april_2013_report.html

Match Report: Liverpool Ladies 4 - 2 Everton Ladies

Liverpool Ladies went into this game in pole position in the FA Women's Super League, 6 points from the final two games would see us crowned Champions of England for the first time...

... Liverpool continued to press and search for a fourth goal, Sarah Gregorius made her derby debut with 20 minutes to go, replacing Louise Fors. Gregorius was quickly thrown into the action - setting Da Costa up for a low hit hard drive that shot narrowly wide of the post....

The 4-2 victory over our Merseyside rivals again sends us clears at the top of the league, our main competitors now for the title Bristol Academy sit 5 points behind in second with a game in hand.

The final day fixture against Bristol will be a title decider should they beat Doncaster in their game in hand. Liverpool vs Bristol is on Sunday 29th September, 2pm KO @ Halton Stadium.

Sad to hear of Football Ferns captain Rebecca Smith retiring from all football due to injury  at the age of 32.

Haven't heard anything in the news - seems strange when it's your country's most prominent female player.

This from women's football guru Jeremy Ruane on Friday:

This one will stun you, Big Pete.

You won't see Bex playing for NZ anymore. Or anyone else for that matter. That blessed knee injury ultimately forced her to call time on her playing career.

However, she hasn't been lost to football - anything but! She has relocated to Zurich, where she now works as FIFA's Head of Women's Competitions, no less! :-)

Also connected to FIFA is Dr Michele Cox, who wears three hats - Director of Development Programmes and Marketing for the Asian Football Development Project; Master Moderator for UEFA; Performance Programme Consultant for FIFA.

And if you're wondering why Hayley Bowden (nee Moorwood) has been missing from the last couple of Football Ferns' squads, she is soon to become a Mum! :-)

    Cheers,

Fantastic news regarding Sarah Gregorius and Liverpool Ladies - they won the FA Women's Super League for the first time in the club's history (after ten consecutive national titles to Arsenal !) yesterday (this morning NZ time) after beating closest rivals Bristol Academy 2-0.

Liverpool had five players playing for England on Thurs. night + Gregorius racing back from Football Ferns duty.

46 goals in 14 games. 12 wins, 2 losses, no draws.Finished bottom previous two seasons - but new manager, new players...

Top-scorer Natasha Dowie (19 goals) is the niece of former Northern Ireland, West Ham & Southampton striker Iain Dowie.

Telegraph: "The Gunners have traditionally had by far the best financial backing from their parent club, but they have been overtaken in cash terms this year by Liverpool, whose investment is close to the £1 million mark, and Chelsea. Next season Manchester City, set to replace Doncaster Rovers Belles in the WSL, will up the ante still further..."

A league of full time professionals and semi-professionals  with a salary cap.
    On launch in 2011:
"The FA wants each club to pay its top four players an annual salary of £20-30,000"

    17. Are there salary caps / minimum wage requirements at each club?

In summary, a club can pay no more than four players an annual salary of more than £20k.

Other than that, each club has the choice as to how to remunerate its players: the rationale being that if we have eight clubs, and each has a maximum of four players on a wage band of £20k or more, this will help spread the talent pool and also ensure there is a core group of players at each club in the tier below that will still be able to earn a wage playing and working for that club.

We will review this annually to make sure it is set at the right level. Club licences will also contain minimum financial provisions and standards which should allow all clubs to operate at a good, semi professional level.

In the future, The FA may weigh up the effectiveness of the individual salary cap against the alternatives to this e.g. ‘wage caps’ which are already in place on a club wide basis in other leagues and sports, whereby a club cannot spend a total of more than £xyz on salaries. It will be easier to take a fully considered view on this when introducing new licences in 2013 and 2014. There will be no changes for 2012.

NB The salary cap excludes the £16k per annum that The FA pays to England international players under their Central Contracts.
