With all that's going on, plus the fact the Socceroos are busy at the Asian Cup, Australia's finest women footballers are probably worthy of their own thread.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-game/...

Furthermore of course they are shortly hosting the FFs plus 2 other sides for a tourney.

I for one am shocked, utterly shocked, that David Gallop and FFA held a press conference that told us absolutely nothing. #Matildas

A few insight into some of the different challenges that being a male, and coaching a female football team would have.

Managing a side with couples in it, wouldn't always be easy. Imagine if you have to drop one, say coming into a World Cup - could make dealing with pushy parents seem like pussy cats.

Anyway FFA have handled Stajcic's sacking extremely poorly.

2019 Women’s World Cup.

Sam Kerr has the Matildas 1-0 up at half time v Italy. She did the Tim Cahill box the corner flag goal celebration.

Mike Tukerman from The Roar, reflects on FFA following the Matilda's overnight defeat to Italy.

Yet when it comes to making the right decision, the FFA gets it wrong every single time.

A stoppage-time defeat to a crafty Italy wouldn’t feel like such a disaster if only it didn’t come on the back of the game shooting itself in the foot every step of the way.

But that’s the kind of football nation Australia is fast becoming.

When it comes to national traits, we’re the Basil Fawlty of the world game.

Similar thing could have been said about NZF lately but at least they seem to be getting there house in order finally.

Not related to Australia but I didn’t see another Women’s World Cup related thread,

How can women’s football expected to be taken more seriously if games are halted because of rain (Sweden v Chile),

I’ve seen the footage, yes it was torrential, like imagine your shower on full blast, but come on, 17 mins to go just play out the match. Modern pitches have draining so it’s not like puddles where going to form.

Unpopular opinion maybe and everyone’s hypersensitive today but come on it’s a bit ridiculous

And who doesn’t love playing football in the rain? *shrugs*

It's not soft. The referee has to determine if the playing surface is, in fact, playable, and whether it poses a risk to the players. Such determination, entirely appropriately, is at the discretion of the referee.

Coincidentally, this applies to other outside factors potentially affecting the game. It's about ensuring fair playing conditions which do not endanger the safety of the players and officials.

You’re right.

I’d say if the pitch is flooding that’s a problem, if it’s heavy rain I’m still going to disagree, as you say though it’s at the referees discretion and that’s not a problem. My bias is love of playing in rain and seeing out a game. I admire that our guys in the A League can play in intense heat.

Let’s swing this back to the Women’s World Cup I was admittedly having a moan about a game being halted.

Matidas Beat Brazil to stay in with a HOPE

All coaches say “a 2-0 scoreline in dangerous”…well Brazil proved that.

The Matildas showed that fighting spirit which was seemingly missing from the Italy clash to come from 2-0 down in the 38th minute to be 3-2 up by 66th minute.

It's that never say die attitude that is embedded in Australia's sporting culture that no matter what is happening, they will never give up and keep trying to get that result.  ( This line sounds straight from the Gallop quote book)

Everyone loves teams that fight like hell and come back from awful situations.

This isnt a criticism of the team but the laws need looking at as the third goal was a bit tough. Surely the Aussie player was offside and interferred with the contact the Brazilian player made on the ball? Its a bit of a grey area.

Apparently this was from the after match interviews

"Marta just responded to German interviewer + interpreter to all the interview questions till they said something along the lines of: "thanks and good luck."

Then Marta continues without being asked and tells the interpreter: "Well, I also have 16 World Cup goals now, just like your beloved Klose! You could've asked me about that, you badly informed feckers. Go interpreter, tell your interviewer that!"
Then the interviewer says to Marta: "aaah haha, yes yes, Klose!"
She leaves without the interpreter translating her words.
The interviewer thus asks the interpreter in front of the cameras what Marta said. The interpreter tells him that she just called them badly informed noobs"

Stolen from another forum so not sure if its actually true.

Watched the game. Though the Matildas were the better team overall They certainly deserve to progress out of there group.

But I thought today the 3rd goal should have been disallowed as Kerr jumped for the ball in an off side position and even though she didn't touch the ball influenced the decision making of the Brazilian defence. This has become a  real grey area in football now since the introduction of VAR and the new recommendation for linemen to delay raising their flags for offside.

Todays decision opens the door for players to influence offside play-on situations by distracting defenders into mistakes. Very grey area now for me.

Don't start this again lol... The ruling from VAR and how the referees have been told to interrupt the law by IFAB agree that the goal stands as the Australian wasn't interfering in play. But from a players perspective you would disagree with that and say the defender may not have made that play (and stuffed it up) if the attacking player wasn't there.

Remember Manny Muscat's own goal, probably wouldn't have made that slide to intercept the ball if Berisha wasn't there.

The key words in that rule are "Not challenging an opponent for the ball"

Kerr jumping in the air to try and get a head on the ball was an act of challenging for the ball in my opinion. I thought it certainly influenced the defenders reaction.

I can remember a situation this year where Krishna in an off side position jumped to try and head the ball. Didn't make any contact but was deamed offside for making an attempt for the ball from an off side position.

My argument is that with VAR and the new recommendation for linesmen to delay their flag in offside.  Means this rule now probably needs revisiting because this kind of scenario is going to creep into the game more with play-on offside calls by the linesman.

Like I said very grey area for me now.

Oh I totally agree with you and it needs looking at, just want to point out something to you about she jumped for it. The Brazilian defender would have had no way to know that Kerr jumped for it, as she was a yard or two behind and jumped after the defender went up. Reply of it with VAR is here https://streamable.com/a7dzb

FFA seeks independent review into Stajcic sacking from Matildas

Dominic Bossi

June 14, 2019 — 12.00am

Football Federation Australia is set to conduct an independent review into its controversial sacking of Alen Stajcic as coach of the Matildas after months of public pressure and calls for greater transparency.

The Herald understands the review could begin as early as next month following the Women’s World Cup and is likely to be conducted with an external third party.
