Some interesting details from last June when Derby County wantd him on a one month extended trail but he couldn't go because he had to stay in NZ to fulfill the requirements for applying for NZ residency. He'll soon have permanent residency and then won't be classified as a foreign player for the Nix I guess:

PSV Eindhoven were also interested in him at one stage.

Phoenix Welcome Krishna

12:28 Wed Jan 08, 2014
Report by: Indra Singh

Fiji football wonder boy Roy Krishna has started training with his new club, the Wellington Phoenix from today.

Already expectations are for the Siberia lad to fit into the A League franchise without too many problems.

Phoenix head coach Ernie Merrick says while the first part of the puzzle was complete for Krishna, it will now be up to the player to prove his worth for a starting place.

He told FBC Sports from Wellington that they were looking forward to having their first ever Fijian player in the side.

“It is the same as the all other players. We expect players to train very very well. Then when they get a chance to play in an A League match, they have to come off the bench and prove themselves. And that is very important part of about our culture and work ethic. I don’t think Roy will have too much trouble in fitting in at all. He starts training today and he will start learning the way we play and the formation as we have two formations. He will need to learn to cooperate with his team mates in attack predominately and learn to defend in the front half as well. So that process starts today and we are all excited about it in Wellington.”

Wellington Phoenix Aware of Fijian Players

16:23 Wed Jan 08, 2014

Report by: Indra Singh

The Wellington Phoenix football club is well aware of talent in Fiji, which could see them signing more players in the future.

The A League franchise signed Fiji wonder boy Roy Krishna yesterday.

Phoenix head coach Ernie Merrick says the talent in Fiji is tremendous with a number of unpolished diamonds.

“In my previous life when I was over at Melbourne Victory and Victorian Institue of Sports, I also assisted the national Under-20 side coach when Australia played in the Oceania region, I was part of the coaching squad that played against Fiji. And I saw enormous talent throughout the islands and the Fijian team was very strong, very quick and very skillful. So I would think we will be doing a more recruiting from Fiji and looking forward to going there and bring the team over at some stage.”

Krishna started training with the Phoenix from today.

You couldn't fault the decision, given Herbert eventually landed Paul Ifill and Chris Greenacre as his two import frontrunners.

Interesting given he trialled in May 2009, Ifill and Greenacre were announced in July 2009, and our final import spot was filled in October with Cheng.

But wasn't there a rule that meant an Asian player was an extra import?

They were talking about it but never did it.

Ricki was always real hit-and-miss with foreign signings wasn't he? Excellent signings like Ifill & Greenacre followed by a complete dud like Cheng. Krishna would have been a better signing than Cheng, also considering he was only 21 back then and ripe for development.
Ernie looks to have better judgement when it comes to new signings so far anyway...Cunningham, his first foreign signing still has to prove himself, but looks more promising with his Costa Rica national team & club pedigree than the likes of Cheng, Gao, George, Cleberson, Totori or Toto.

Ricardhino's salary would have been greater than all of those combined (probably by about 3-4 times). Some of those were a bit puzzling but it is easier when you have more money to play with across the entire squad.

Angulo was around for 2 season but they couldn't work out terms to extend his stay.

I see that a newspaper report mentions one Rex Dawkins as Roy's "agent", if I recall correctly. Is this the same white-haired Mr Dawkins who was supreme overlord of Waitakere United for all those seasons?

In the new interview with Krishna in today's Dom-Post he mentions Rex as his "manager" - guess it was he who signed him for Waitak years ago so they still have a relationship.

I think it's awesome that in our league players genuinely get the opportunity to go from amateur perk football to professional level, it's one of the great things about the A-League - this really is a great story for the guy and I hope it works out for all concerned. Biggest thing is adapting to defenders who will be stronger and quicker and will give him much less space so it will be a lot harder to fashion chances.  But it does seem like he'll put the ball in the net if given the opportunity

He came over during that absolutely horrible weather during the Bocca game...was freezing and windy, got on the pitch and long story short we signed that South American guy with the hair and name that's not worth the effort to remember.

I remember that game, only it was down the road at Hutt Raceway park I think. It was a hideous day, and to be fair, no-one looked like they really wanted to be there. I'm trying to remember whether Toto was at that one as well, it was at the time where we seemed to have a different trialist every week (before they either left or got pinched by Gold Coast).
