Nice strikes Mabil & Rogic.

Finish 2nd in the group behind Jordan.

In round of 16 will play 2nd team from Group F.

So either Japan or Ubekistan, who play each other tomorrow night, to decide the pecking order in Group F.

Syria going home (4th in the pool). Palestine still a chance as one of the better 3rd placed sides after drawing 0-0 with Jordan.

The Mexican Ref wasn't very good, sounds like he missed an obvious hand ball by Milligan in the box. Saw a few Aussies saying the penalty was a square up call.

Into the quarters.

Minimum required by Arnie, to not get sacked, or at least severely criticised?

Down to the quarter finals...

What I find interesting is the improvenment in Asian Football

The top Asian sides have always been capable of upsetting the big name sides.

In Russia, Japan were 2-0 up against Belgium in their round of 16 game, and went toe to toe, before the Belgians last minute breakaway winner. Great game of football.

South Korea stunned the German two zip.

Australia pushed France, but overall were probably disappointing.

Iran pushed Spain, drew with Portugal. Saudi Arabia recovered from a 5-0 Russian thumping, to beat Egypt.

Still think the other Asian nations are playing catchup though. The depth isn't there yet. If the AWs had to qualify for an expanded WC (with 8 Asian WC spots) thorough Asia, I'd back them to qualify - IF they consistently had their best players available for qualifiers.

If Sth Korea beat Bahrain, 4 of the above 5 nations who were at the Russia 2018, will be in the Asian Cup QFs. Only Saudi have definitely missed out to date, and only because they lost to Japan.

Vietnam & Thailand do look improvers. War has ravaged Iraq & Syria.

Socceroos will struggle to do well this time in UAE, as too many injuries

Reasonable summary... I would add the money in Asian Football today will have a impact ... how much I am not sure ... whats interesting a number of Asian countries are seeing the """soft power influence""" sport can have ...

However I don't think you appreciate or maybe have not acknowledged the improvement especially in middle eastern countries in particular ..

I hope one day the Oceania is done away with and it becomes part of Asia but me thinks maybe the PI nations don't see it that way.

I don't know much about next tier down (below Saudi & Iran) ME nations.

Iraq did win the Asian Cup 12 years ago, and I was real surprised how hard Syria pushed the Socceroos over 2 legs in 5th placed playoffs, October 2017. Took Aussie to ET, and from memory the Syrians hit the post and could have won on away goals.

Still generally their players pretty much all play in the ME leagues, and ain't such good travellers. Generalisation.

It's a real pity Omar Abdulrahman isn't in one of the big European leagues. He's an unbelievable talent. He could put ME/UAE football on the map like Salah has done for Egypt. Would help if he shortened his last name as well!

Also a real shame he's injured for the Asian Cup, it would be fun watching him run around against the Socceroos in QF.

I think the simple answer if answer is the right word ... is most countries are improving and technical knowledge is increasing, the money in the ""oil States"" and in leading Asian countries is growing and will soon be more than many European leagues ....

Me thinks, the Asian leagues will in time out grow the bias against them... similar the MLS is growing hugely as well...

Below are two vids one from the MLS bout 30 seconds and the other from Japan about 2:30 minutes it illustrates how Football is exploding around the world... tis a somewhat pity we live in a AFL, League and Union part of he world ....

Enjoy first the MLS then the J _League

Cool vids, but I don't know if they demonstrate that football is exploding around the world - just that it is the world game. That in countries with big popns & big cities - you will get increased chance of large crowds and impressive atmospheres.

The big leagues in Europe, will always attract the best. Likes of Omar Abdulrahman, are an oddity. Champions League will just get richer & richer. You visit most parts of the world, and it's still often the most popular viewing for football fans to tune into.

Atlanta has been an amazing success story in the MLS.

If that footage was from the MLS Cup final, then somewhere down at the very bottom of the vid is Kiwi Bill Tuiloma sitting on the bench for Portland, in front of 80,000. Yet no coverage in NZ mainstream sports news I bet.

So fair chance semifinalists, will be 4 of the 5 Asian sides at the World Cup.

Saudi having been knocked out earlier by Japan.

Socceroos vulnerable against UAE maybe, with Rogic suspended.

Qatar vs Korea in a couple of hours should be a great game. From what I've seen the two best teams in the competition so far. Japan and Australia haven't impressed (haven't seen any Iran or UAE games)... Picking Korea (and have $ on them) but it wouldn't surprise me if Qatar wins this.
