Its funny how the definition of ambition differs for payers depending on how old they are. For young players an Ambitious club is one who bloods young players early, and lets them prove themselves. For older players Ambition seems to mean, only signing older established players who arnt a threat to your position in the team. The reason most of the "invincibles" from 3 years ago are gone, is that they have simply been replaced with younger, newer players who can do the job nearly aswell (if not better)but still can learn more, and have the fitness and pace the older players used to have. The only exception to this is Bergkamp, he should never have retired and should still be on the pitch even if he has to use a mobility scooter to get around.

I am sorry, but struggling into 4th the last 2 seasons proves that they cannot do the job anywhere near as well as the team that went the season unbeaten.  It is naive to think anything else.

In no way can you say Arsenal struggled into fourth in the 2006/07 season. We were never challenged for 4th, had 8 points on Spurs and could have obtained 3rd in the last match had we won instead of drawing. "It is naive to think anything else".

ok - fair point.  That makes them as good as the team from a few seasons earlier that went through the whole season undefeated, and won the league.

I'm not arguing that, merely pointing out an error.

If I was to predict the outcome of the season I would say that we're outsiders to challenge for the title but we do have a lot of youthful potential that certainly might challenge. We are still a top four side and I see nothing to imply that this will change this season. But as we know, anything can happen and I can't wait for the season to start.

I think thanks are in order. Those six points were the differance between 15th & 18th. We decided it was better to have another london club stay up so we dont have as far to travel for away games. You may make your appreciation felt with a cheque payable to the"Cheers Arsenal for Saving the Hammers" fund or just make it out to C.A.S.H and mail it to me.

WE're close to signing Kieron f**kING Dyer - I mean:
A: He's sh*t
B: He'll be re-united with Lee Bowyer - they'll just end up happy-slapping again

The only issue I have with Dyer is his fitness. I don't agree with most Hammers fans thats he's sh*t. I think he's exciting to watch when he takes on defenders (but hey, thats just me).

Dyer deal off.

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley has revealed the club's attempt to sign Kieron Dyer has been blocked "at the 11th hour" by Newcastle.

Dyer seemed set for a switch to Upton Park after the Hammers had agreed a fee believed to be 6million for the England midfielder.

But Curbishley insisted the deal was now "definitely off" to his great frustration.

He said: "We made an offer, had it accepted, agreed personal terms and the player passed a medical but it was pulled at the 11th hour by Newcastle and there's not much we can do about that.

"It has never happened to me before. We are disappointed and the player is very disappointed but it's definitely off."

It remains unclear whether Newcastle had asked West Ham for more money after the London club had been promised 2million in the settlement over Carlos Tevez or whether a higher offer had then come in for Dyer.

Curbishley, who saw his side beat Roma 2-1 at Upton Park in their final pre-season friendly, also insisted the Hammers had made efforts to keep Tevez.

He said: "I'm disappointed he didn't want to come back to us. We tried but he decided his future is elsewhere. So all I can say is thanks for what he did.

"I don't believe he was the only player here last year but obviously had a big say in things.

"He knew we were keen for him to stay, but once Manchester United came in he decided his future was elsewhere."

Dean Ashton scored the winner for the Hammers against the Serie A side after being sidelined for a year after suffering an injury during an England training session

Curbishley said: "He must be so happy the way it's going for him. It has been a long year for him but he now comes in on Monday morning and says 'I have thrown a marker down, it's up to you to decide whether you are going to pick me'."

Scott Parker is described as only 50-50 to make the opening day clash with Manchester City next week.

Curbishley said: "I was expecting him back by now but if he doesn't make the first game he should be OK for the second."

Hammers seal Dyer deal.

Kieron Dyer's on-off move from Newcastle to West Ham has finally been concluded after the two sides agreed terms.

The England midfielder, who has been keen to leave St James' Park to be closer to his family, looked like he had missed out on the chance to join the Hammers when the deal stalled.

West Ham had agreed a fee for the 28-year-old, who can play across the midfield or as a support striker, but the deal hit the buffers when the Magpies decided to up their valuation of the player from around 6million to nearer 8million.

However Dyer, who has earned 32 England caps since making his debut in 1999, will now link up with a clutch of former Newcastle team-mates including Scott Parker, Craig Bellamy and Lee Bowyer - with whom he had a infamous on-field scuffle in April 2005 - at Upton Park.

Hammers boss Alan Curbishley said: "We're trying to build a squad here; we are short in the middle, and Kieron can play that position.

"We're delighted to get the player. Newcastle changed it at the last minute before - when he was just walking in the door - so that was disappointing.

"But common sense has prevailed; Kieron is looking forward to joining us, and Newcastle go down their route.

"Every player you sign has risks - and he is no different. I hope he hits the ground running and shows everyone what a good player he is."

As for the relationship between Bowyer and Dyer, Curbishley does not anticipate any problems.

"I spoke to both players and have been assured that it was a one-off, and they both speak to each other regularly," said the manager.

"It was just two players desperate to do well; they were getting well beaten, and it just boiled over.

"Kieron's got to make up for a bit of lost time, and I hope he does. We're delighted to have him on board."

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce confirmed Dyer's departure, saying: "The issue is now over and from the club's point of view and Kieron's point of view it's a satisfying result.

"We've all got what we wanted and we move on and I wish him all the best. I hope he has a successful career from now on and of course he is closer now to his family."

West Ham have slammed Sheffield United's intention to sue them for the cost of relegation as "desperate".

The Blades recently failed in their High Court bid to force a new Premier League action against West Ham over the Carlos Tevez affair.

However, they have now decided on a new course of action which they hope will lead to the award of considerable damages. They have estimated the cost of their relegation at between 30million and 50million.

The Blades are suing over a breach of contract and claim to have evidence which proves West Ham "misled" the original independent panel by failing to disclose vital information relating to their arrangement with Tevez's adviser Kia Joorabchian.

But the Hammers issued a statement which read: "We are extremely disappointed that Sheffield United have seen fit to embark on this latest desperate action.

"Not only does Sheffield United's claim lack legal merit, but it is also based on their incorrect belief that West Ham withheld an agreement from the Premier League and the April disciplinary commission.

"In fact, long before the disciplinary hearing, West Ham United made the Premier League fully aware of the existence and status of the agreement in question.

Earlier the Blades had themselves issued a statement which read: "Sheffield United announce that we are to issue proceedings against West Ham United in connection with the 'Tevez Affair'.

"Sheffield United will claim substantial damages for breaches of contract by West Ham.

"Sheffield United's basis for the claim is that West Ham acted dishonestly in obtaining the registration of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, in that they failed to reveal that those players were owned by a third party.

"The Premier League would not have registered those players with West Ham had they known the true position.

"The players, particularly Tevez, played a key role in West Ham's season, giving West Ham an unfair advantage at the expense of the other Premiership teams - including Sheffield United - all of which had played by the rules.

"Sheffield United are confident that sufficient remedies exist in law to ensure the Tevez affair cannot simply be brushed under the carpet."

The Blades have put the cost of relegation at between 30million and 50million.

West Ham were fined 5.5million by the Premier League over the Tevez affair in April.

Sheffield United believe they should have been docked points for such a serious breach of rules but failed in their attempts to have the original punishment changed or the hearing reconvened.

The Blades have been warned by sports litigation expert Peter Coyle that they are on a "hiding to nothing".

He said: "Proving West Ham have breached their duty of good faith is easy enough because they have admitted to breaking the rules, but to prove that has been the main cause of their (Sheffield United's) relegation is incredibly difficult to do.

"Sheffield United didn't beat Wigan on the last game of the season. That to me is a bigger reason for their relegation than Tevez, West Ham or anything else.

"It is difficult to advise people to drop anything worth 50million but legally I would be struggling to find a justification to say to Sheffield United 'let's keep banging on'."

Have to admit I'm not too confident. I'm predicting 1-1 draw again. At least we finally get to see the boys play live this season. And Shorey will make a brilliant goal line save in the final minute to completely rub the salt in.

Yeah never thought I would celebrate a Bellamy goal. But I was out of my seat with the cracker he got yesterday. What a strike!

A bit of a shame that it was the first Hammers game of the season and Bellamy was the only new signing we saw...no Faubert, Ljungberg, Parker or Dyer. Can't wait to see us at full strength.

solano and camara are only cover till jan.  then like you say hammer head faubert will hopefully be back. if reading keep playing like that shorey may change his mind and come to UP. even tho hes a gooner and coppel wants 10 mill. we didnt do to bad in the transfer window, i know some are crocks. i never wanted bellamy. i have always thought he was a jumped up little sh*t. but by the way he was running all over the park on sat i have quickly changed my mind.

on another note coppel may make a good england manager(?)

Picked up on a website somewhere today that the penalty save by Green was his first in 300 games as a professional. Thats incredible that he can reach international standard with that record. You would think he would pick the right direction sometimes.

Looked as though he picked up an injury in the second half but no news yet.

Do we want Adriano. We just got rid of a bunch of niteclub boys. Etherington has obviously reformed.

why green isnt englands number one baffles me, but saying that id sooner he save his fitness for WH. read somewhere, daily mail i think that etherington talked publicly about his gambling addiction last season. he spent a week in a gambling rehab to kick the habbit. reckons the bling boys were driving bently's and he had a VW!! thats how bad he was spunking his wages
as for adriano we need some quality coming in to get us into the champ"s league

Hopefully Lucas Neill's insistance to playing for his country will be followed by some of the Kiwis. Ryan Nelsen must have as much respect at Bl;ackburn as LN does at WHU.

Having said that I am presuming he is available this time,  if he has been named captain.

Wouldnt give Chris Killen the same chance

Fifth,  and three off the lead.Nose bleed stuff this so early in the season.
News articles seem to be pointing to Bellamy being missing for a few games, although not officially confirmed. All the more important was this result, even if the football wasnt convining, chances were created and taken. Z man was fit but Cole got the nod. Not again please Curbs!!!

3 of the back four tired from internationals, and a failed experience in pairing Collins and Upson. Upson or Collins paired with  Ferdinand or Gabiddon still gives us plenty of choice.
Parker and more of Lungberg to come plus the two new guys, we can go on from this.

Phoenix, Petone and West Ham winning in one weekend, I might enjoy work this week.

I finally got round to watching the game last night.

Pleasing result for a number of reasons:

Deano back on the scoresheet
Ljungberg back from injury (and Parker due back soon)
Matty E continuing his good form (what a cross to set up 3rd goal)
Kept Boro scoreless (alot of luck involved)
Luck finally on our side (see above)
We're winning games both home and away

Anyone know the prognosis on Bellamy?

Nothing on any of the websites yet about Ballamy injury.  If he is going to be out for a few weeks he will miss Newcastle away, Arsenal at home and Villa away. But then we have about five game that we really do need to win, (not draw) if we can expect to be in the top 5 - 10., (Sunderland, Portsmouth, Bolton, Derby, Spurs plus another 6 months of football after that. We have to bite the bullet with injuries and not rush people back. I think that is what happened to Bellars on Saturday. OK, Camara had only arrived 24 hours earlier and Z Man is just back this week (knee), but we created enough chances to score three. It was the defence that was shaky. As for Carlton Cole, he can hardly be expected to have a great touch when he only plays 45 minutes now and then. Why dont the reserve team play every week, or does the official website not report all the games. Bowyer, boy does he want to play at the moment!!

Heskey has broken a bone in his foot so Deano may be getting the call. If he does, he should just turn up for the game and not go to training this time.

eggy out.......parker in....

looks like the new phase of the west ham marketing machine is taking place. eggy looks like he could be stepping back to let in a team of managers to sort out the new stadium affairs??

could be wrong!!??  hope nothing sinister in it.

good news tho, looks like parker could be fit to face the bar codes. would be good to beat them. just dont think it will be that easy after the embarrassement handed out by derby.
