QPR Thread (League Cup gloating, P4)
We are delighted to announce the free transfer signing of Cardiff City left back Chris Barker.
The 27 year-old, who spent last season on loan at Championship newcomers Colchester United, has put pen to paper on a two year deal at Loftus Road.
Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, gaffer John Gregory revealed his delight at the signing: "He's one I've been interested in for some time, so I'm delighted he's signed.
"He excelled in a very successful Colchester side last year and he was a firm favourite at Cardiff before the arrival of Dave Jones.
"There were four or five other Clubs in this division pursuing him, so it's quite a coup for us.''
After being voted the Cardiff City Supporters' Player of the Year in 2004/05, Barker found himself surplus to requirements following the arrival of Dave Jones at Ninian Park.
Undeterred, the ever dependable left sided defender joined Colchester in mid-August and quickly established himself as the first choice left back at Layer Road, having initially signed on loan until January.
That move was eventually prolonged until the end of the 2006/07 season and Barker, who won many admirers for his consistent performances on the left hand side of the U's defence, made 39 appearances in all competitions for Geraint Williams' side.
Widely regarded as the U's most impressive defender during a campaign which saw them exceed all expectations with a tenth place finish, Barker's season ended on a sour note when he was forced to sit out the final game of the campaign after receiving a red card against Stoke City, a ban which still has three games to run.
Barker will wear the number three shirt, vacated by Mauro Milanese.
Excellent signing for the club. Checked out the Colchester forum, many of there fans are filthy they didnt make more of an effort to sign him.
Has also been a few rumours a massive takeover bid will be tabled next week.
Overall yes we need someone who is far more wealthy than Giani and his men to buy the club out. I think he has more money that he lets on though, he always seems to be struggling to pay back debts, bills and whatever but I think he just doesnt want too. So at current the club isnt going places, its not really going down either. Also I think we will sell Cook on the cheap (2-3m) to get money to pay for this VAT. Also what I find weird with the financial position. Last year Waddock had quite a big transfer kitty. Blackstock 500,000 Ward reported 350,000, Rehman 400,000. So thats overall a million.
Newcastle midfielder Nolberto Solano and Dutch goalkeeper Tim
Krul have signed new contracts with the club.
Krul is currently on international duty with Holland U21's at the
European Championships.
He made his name with a string of stunning saves in Newcastle's 1-0
Uefa Cup win in Palermo last season before a knee injury kept the
19-year-old out for the rest of the campaign.
Krul said: "Newcastle is a massive club and I really wanted to stay
here. Shay (Given) is a fantastic goalkeeper, one of the best, as
is Steve Harper.
"It will be hard challenge for me but in a few years I hope I can
challenge them."
Krul added: "I am allowed to go on loan for next season, so we are
looking for a club now. We are waiting for clubs, maybe
Championship. We will have to see."

QPR'S Italian owners are ready to sell the club for around
4 million.
Chairman Gianni Paladini says he is willing to part with his shares
for the price he bought them for and that fellow investors Antonio
Caliendo and Franco Zanotti will do the same.
It means that after a year of being merely open to offers, the trio
- who together own around 62 per cent of the club - have now gone a
step further and effectively put Rangers up for sale.
A group fronted by former Liverpool and Tottenham striker Ronny
Rosenthal is among a number of parties to have expressed an
interest. Another group is due to enter discussions about a
possible takeover today (Thursday).
Paladini paid around
650,000 for a 22 per
cent stake back in 2004 and ousted Bill Power as chairman a year
later following a bitter struggle for control.
QPR have rejected a 200,000 bid from Colchester for Ray Jones.
