Something to keep an eye on but sounds like a mountain out of a molehill situation https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53860014

I'm an optimistic pessimist.

I'm positive things will go wrong.

Not surprised this thread has been this quiet with how poor we have been.

Yes we had a poor pre-season. But it is no excuse to go and perform so lethargically and lack lustre against Palace, a team that we should beat comfortably with the talent at our disposal.

Maguire and Lindelof as a pair has to end.

Woodward needs to pull finger and do a decent deal for once. The only reason we got Donny is because VDS is the DOF at Ajax. The mere fact Woodward has the audacity to use the match programme as a platform to harp on about finances shows how the management and owners of this club truly view it, purely as a business. They do not care about the football at all, it's all about the image and branding for them.

I'm sorry, the fact is that United has only had one preseason and Pogba, Martial, Bruno, Lindelof did not take part in that. So to somehow dismiss that the preseason was barely 3 weeks long, with a 2 week break in between is crazy.

A typical preseason, is about 12 weeks with 6 weeks off and 5 or 6 games to prepare. It is a joke that United (or any team that played in European competitions) have already begun their season.

I am not going to knock the on field performances for at least the next few weeks. Its going to be a tough watch.

Unrelated, United's transfer strategy to delay to try and get the price down clearly does not work and the faster that they realise this, the better the on field team can be.

Unfortunately, Bailly needs to stay fit because its in games like those vs Palace that he will be better than Lindelof. But he is always injured. Bring in Sancho and only if Jones / Smalling / Dalot / Lingard / Pereira leaves do we need more. Otherwise if those players only play in rotation, we will be ok.

But its going to be a very slow start

Optimistic spin:

Crystal Palace started their preseason a week after ours ended. They were always going to be sharper. Going down an early goal against a team who is happier to park the bus and play on the break is the worst case scenario.

Realistic:

Club is in shambles - why the fudge can't we sort a transfer out before we start the season? Chelsea should be getting their balls strung this season by clubs who know they're desperate and willing to pay. Instead they get all their (very solid) business done early.

Look at us, shambles. I totally accept not signing players like Reguilon with buy-back clauses. But why don't we have other options. And why weren't we doing it weeks ago? If Real Madrid weren't play ball move on. Do it before the window opens!

Other than those that have been mentioned above - Pogba was genuinely fudgeing terrible this weekend. Van der Beek did more running in about 30 seconds than Pogba.

Cavani doesn't seem like the whole invest in youth policy, in fact it is rather reminiscent of Falcao, Zlatan, Schweinsteiger etc.

Literally all we want from VAR is to look at the Martial vs Lamela highlights and say "you know what, Martial slapped him in the face but Lamela elbowed him in the face, so you'll need to send them both off"

Instead we get offsides measured to he millimetre and nonsensical hand ball decisions.

I turned it off then. Ruined a good game.

And yes Cavani seems to be Falcao 2.0. No idea what the club is doing.

I was going to take the piss at you guys but then Villa changed that scenario. All I can say is that it (& the Villa result) was is freakish. Bookies would have either made or lost a sharkload of money.

I'd call that a pretty good deadline day for us. Would have been better if Romero, Rojo, and Jones were ditched but hey-ho.

Know nothing about the two wingers, but look good on YouTube (yes, as everyone does), and I'm glad we didn't end up with Sancho. I just don't see a GBP100m player there. And he seems like a bit of a knob.

A new CB would have been welcome, maybe Dayot and/or Mings in the future.

Decent start to the CL. Sounds like big performances from Fred, Tuanzebe and AWB and I've also seen people saying Pogba was v good off the bench. Will have to catch a replay tonight.

Decent game. Yeah, Fred, Tuanzebe, AWB all played well.

I watch very little of Neymar, but whenever I play him he looks like a child trying to play FIFA by spamming the trick stick. Honestly looks so ineffective. This idea that he's the third best player on earth? Nah.
