Don't you just love "Glory Hunters"? You know the ones that have several different club jersey's hidden in their wardrobe just waiting to see whos leading the Premiership or winning in the cups and then out pops the selected jersey. LOL. One year they're manu united even though they've never been to Old T., the next they're Arsenal or Chelsea!

Why did you support the club of your choice? How did it come about? Was it your local club side or were you like me and saw them play on TV that first time? I first saw QPR V Aston Villa in that fateful 1975/76 season. Big League Soccer with Brian Moore was making it's debut that season. QPR. Both teams played really good football that day. It ended 1-1. I thought QPR had a cool kit and there after started a 32 year long love affair. I'm NZ born and bred but when 19 in 1980, I went for the BIG OE. And again in '85. I've sen a few games on those trips, bought heaps of stuff from the club shop (A contencious argument I have raised on another thread), stayed up a lot of nights or even set the Alarm to go on line and be with my fellow R'ssss.

Half of Londons Manchester United community had never seen the Reds play outside of London! What's that all about? LOL

Anyway, through thick and too much, thin, I've stayed with the hoops. I'm a real fan, you know, the sort that has to tolerate those taunts from your neighbouring clubs when your team gets a hiding or even worse, relegated! But I'm still a hoop. Loyalty is very important to me. Regardless how well the Phoenix do, I will go to the games as my shift work allows, I will cheer on our first ever professional team, I'll even be involved in some way activiely, but the Hoops will still be my number one love. They haven't won the FA Cup - even though they had the better of Spurs in two games! They haven't won the League title - mainly because Wolves lost their nerve with 15 minutes to go and allowed liverpool to steal it - Stealing and Liverpool really are synominous after all! QPR have been to Europe twice, They've even visited New Zealand  (1983).

Did you know that pre Ambranovich And all those wasted Millions, Chelsea actually were attracting gates as low as 9,000 for a premiership match! Even Fulham have done better than that!

The point of this thread? An introduction to you all of myself and also to raise the question, Are you a glory hunter? Would you stick with your team if they were relegated? Or would you check the tables and see which Jersey you should wear today?

I support Arsenal. I have since i was about 6 years old. They are the only team i have supported excluding the now defunct Football Kingz & NZ Knights, and the newly founded Wellington Phoenix. I don't have any other club shirts apart from an away Inter Milan shirt which was my dad's but he is living overseas so i look after it.

If Arsenal got relegated, i would still wear the shirts, sing the songs and follow the matches on the net (cause sky wouldn't show championship games). I would love to go to an Arsenal game live, but right now i can't it would just be far too expensive. I plan to when i'm on my OE.

Good to see you supporting a lower league club though mate good loyalty i like that and welcome to the forum!

Gidday gooner fan. Last season I found the premiership quite boring except that last game between Sheffield and Wigan. Big clubs get bigger, everyone else suffers. I miss the passion of the lower league. Ok, players were not world beaters but they have heart and passion.

Thanks to you tube, you can see some awesome highlights on there. I get really peeved when SKY uk has a Championship game live and we get 4 sports schannels showing either a repeat of the same golf tournement on two of them, ancient cricket or some NPC games from yesteryear. I think if SKY NZ who seems to be the only "Sky" not to show them, then a lot more interest in the lesser clubs would increase. NOT everyone in NZ is an ardent die-hard AB follower. As I said, NZ born and bred!

Not a glory hunter but sorry Lonegunmen a United fan here and have been for more years than i care to remember. Can even remember being brought to tears at our relegation years ago. As for why well i used to be coached by an absolute nutter of a spurs fan when i was a kid,and nothing would piss him off more than letting him know you supported United.Given the pain he put us through it was only natural I choose them and its stuck, that and the fact that Bobby and George played for them.

Have never been to the UK so I havnt been lucky enough to go to Old Trafford but its certainly on my todo list, hopefully something that will be done in the next couple of years. Will time it so I can get to see more than just their games though.

So glory hunter no but a passionate supporter yes.

I support Colchester United - whether in the Conference (as fairly recently) or our amazing rise to the Championship (one of the great stories of recent English soccer).

I supported them at Workington Town, Grimsby, Hartlepool, Fisher Athletic as well as the glamour games against West Brom and Southampton.

I am a distant member now I live in NZ. (I also am a member of Clacton Town who play in the Eastern Counties League).

I have admiration for the fans who rescued Telford United and the other pheonix clubs.

Read my signature lonegunmen  , no glory involved in supporting my mob!  Supported Thistle for over 30 years and I've got the wrinkles to show for it.

Got a bit of a soft spot for QPR btw, got taken along to Loftus Road to see them years ago, around the time they were doing really well in the old 1st Division  (? did they finish 2nd) and got into Europe. Don Masson was playing for them I remember.

West Ham forever.

Unfortunately I've already had to endure a couple of relegations and seasons in the 2nd flight. This season was oh so nearly going to be another one.

West Ham fan all the way.  Lived in London for 8 years, and had a season ticket at Upton Park for the 98/99 season.  I started playing Saturday football again, so went to about 10 games a season.

Have some soft-spots for a couple of other teams - used to go and watch QPR play as I lived in Wembley for a bit, and it was only 15 minutes drive.  They were in league 2 and garbage, but it was always good fun.  I then moved to Fulham (about 3 minutes walk to Craven Cottage) so used to go and watch them after work if there was nothing on TV.  This was when they were in League 2, and Bracewell was in charge.

Having said all this, the truth is I hate every other club, and love West Ham.

Well I have supported Luton Town since 1974 and Man Utd since 1975.  Have a soft spot for West Ham.  Have been to Kenilworth Road and Upton Park, but not made it to the Theatre of Dreams yet! Been to watch Luton  lose to NZ 3-2 on a rice paddy of a pitch at Newmarket Park in 1977.  They were a decent second division side back then with some good players.  Have always supported Man Utd as the ancestors came from there.  Soft spot for Oldham too. Luton have  only been to the FA Cup final once in 1959 where they lost to Nottingham Forest.  But my greatest moment as a Luton fan was the Littlewoods (League Cup) Final of 1988 beating Arsenal with a Brian Stein goal in the 90th minute! I think I'll wear out that video eventually!  Woohoo! Post no. 100!!!!!!!

I've followed Leyton Orient since the late seventies, when England B toured here with Glenn Roeder in their number. Roeder was on Orient's books at the time, and the O's secretary back then was my grandfather's best mate, and so Glenn paid a visit to my house with my grandfather and his mate (they were showing him around before the game) and kicked a ball around with me in the back yard for a while. Total bliss for a 13 year old footy nutter.
He then got me into the dressing rooms for the game at Newmarket Park, introduced me to the players and I got all the autographs, which I still have today (including Bobby Robson, who was manager for the tour). He even sent me programmes etc via the club when he returned. An absolute gent.
Stuff like that stays with you, and I've been an O's fan ever since.

Spurs Fan, have been destined to be thus cursed/ blessed since before I was born (hereditary).

I've never seen us win the league.
An I was only 4 when we last won a European Tournament (1984)
I remember the FA Cup win in '91

Sometimes I worry if we do manage to win anything that we'll inherit a whole bunch of glory hunting fans. .  . To be honest I sometimes think we're better of being mid level. . . .

NZ football first and foremost but Ipswich Town since 1978.

Have about 40 Football strips but the only English one that isn't a Town shirt is a Barnet one with Loaded on the front that is too small for me anyway.  Will nearly always have a soft spot for any club with kiwi's at it but if they were playing Ipswich i'd want an Ipswich win.

It's brilliant to see fans on here that are following Championship sides. Imagine being a Rochdale fan. They've never been promoted nor won anything. Those to me are the real supporters.

Spurs fan, don't swet it. I saw them here in NZ in the early/mid 70's. They've spent millions and won not much since those 80's FA Cup wins. I expect that to change though. Berbatov has to be bargain signing of anyones season!

Ipswich town, been to Portman road, Your club will progress his season. I think they might be the dark horse of the Championship.

Luton will do well but not sure about Colchester. Millwall better than most expect. And Orient to improve on last season.

Watch West Ham recovr from the Teves affair. Bellamey is just the sort to do the job! Not sure about the gooners though. they have some awesome youth players coming through their sytem though.

Celtic? well its always Celtic or Rangers, such a tough league. Partick Fan, been past your ground, your lot did well in the 70's but whilr Celtic and Rangers exist, the rest of Scottish football might as well play in their own league. watch out for Brechin City!!

Would you stick with your team if they were relegated? Yes, but I dont want to imagine Conference :(

You think supporting QPR is hard? We were voted the most stressful team to support. We've been in administration, been hours from non existtence, and came 1 result from going into non-league. But im County til I die, nothing and nobody will change that.

Hull City, since the Tuesday night in 1972 when i watched us draw 0-0 with Luton

I was hooked, in the next 1 1/2 seasons before we came back to NZ i went to ever home game but one (bloody scout camp - we beat Orient 2-0 and i was gutted when I heard the Tigers come on on the radio), watched the reserves when they were at home, even a few youth team games

then we came back to NZ

saw 3 games when i was back for a look in 78-79

If they finally (after 103 +  years of trying)  make it to the top division before i die then i suppose I'll tell my story to the bank manager and pop over for a look, or if retirement (still a way off) comes first I'll pop over whatever division we are in.

We've also had some trouble with hooligans recently, about 200 forest ran on our pitch after a friendly and aboout 50 of our firm lads went on, the forest fans sh*tted themselves cause the county lads were the real deal and we chased 200 of them off, but the few that stayed on got f**ked up. Banning qutie a few, which is a big shame because the forest twats were the ones to blame and you cant really blame the county lads for getting angry as some disrespectful twats. Rant over.

It's a myth that 'Dale have never been promoted. They went up from the fourth in 68/69 and were relegated back down in 1974. They also profited from the rearranging of the leagues in the late fifties, and went from Division Three (North) to Division Three outright, by virtue of their league position. It only lasted a year, but for them back then it was a big deal.
I spent some time living in Rochdale circa 1998. Although a Leyton Orient fan I quickly warmed to the club and saw many home (and a fair few away) games.
I remember first arriving there and going for a midweek afternoon walk up to Spotland. I bought some stuff from the club shop and just as I was leaving the first team squad returned from training. Tony Ford, who was first team coach and coming to the end of a long playing career (second only to Peter Shilton in terms of league appearances) told me to wait a couple of minutes while he showered and then gave me a tour of the ground. This sort of thing is what endears you to a club, and a club like 'Dale are, to me, the very heart and soul of football. 4000 or so loyal fans that stick with them through thick and thin, (OK, through thin and thinner) and, believe me, the town will go crazy when they go up this season!

And further to the above post, Spurs vs Auckland at Newmarket Park was the best game of football I've ever seen live. Auckland were 3-1 up about 15 to play and thenSpurs turned in on big time to win 5-3. A fantastic night.

"NEWS FROM THE GLORY MUNTERS"

Millwall lose a striker to the Cobblers because he wants to "further his career"

Poul Hubertz says he would love to stay at Millwall, but admits he may have to leave to further his career.

The striker is currently training with Bournemouth and is set to play for the Cherries against Portsmouth tonight.

The Dane told the South London Press:

'I think if I had been playing for Millwall, I would have done well. But it is up to the manager, and I have to respect his views.

'But all I'm doing now is trying to get fit so that if anything happens, I will be ready.'

Millwall boss Willie Donachie also added that should Hubertz stay in South London next season, he will be given a chance:

'He knows if our four other forwards are fit, though, it will be hard for him to be involved. But I've known players be told that and then end up full internationals, so the door is never closed.'

my old lady was a Man Utd fan around the time i was born (1982) and it kinda just rubbed off on me. I guess it was set in stone for me when I saw Lee Sharpe play, I know he was a bit of a c**t but I fondly remeber his celebration a la Elvis (pulling the corner flag down like a microphone)

thats my story!
