A message from Team Wellington about the upcoming Oceania Champions League campaign:

As most of you will know sometimes when you have a small degree of success in amateur sport you are rewarded in strange ways.

At Team Wellington over the last three seasons we have finally moved to a position where we are current Champions of the Sterling Sports Premiership, the pinnacle of our National Game. This is a fantastic result for Wellington Football and augers well for the development of the game in our city and region.

Along with this honour, and a couple of previous runner up placings, we are now required to compete in the FIFA Oceania Champions League. This has taken us to Fiji in the past and this year requires us to travel to Kone, New Caledonia at the end of this upcoming week.

As is usually the case funding this venture is extremely challenging for us and funds cannot be sourced, as a general rule, from Community Trusts who do help us with our domestic competition.

We are once again getting down to the wire and are short in our budget to the tune of approximately $25,000 and this is why I am writing to you.

I am hoping that by reaching out to you and your connections that we might find eleven generous Wellingtonians who may be prepared to take a chance and join the Team Wellington First XI (Flyer Attached) Memberships can be syndicated but we are only able to offer the benefit of the lucky draw to one individual.

Our First XI along with supporters who have helped us in previous campaigns will, in addition to the exclusive benefits outlined in the flyer, permanently take pride of place in Team Wellingtons history and will be recognised in all publications.

If this is not something that you would be prepared to consider perhaps you have contacts that might help us. Please put me in touch with these people if this is the case or feel free to make an approach on our behalf.

I hope you will give attention to our request and look forward to hearing back from you or alternatively make contact with our general manager directly at [email protected].

Thank you for your time.

Wonder if there are enough people on here who might chip in to raise $2,200.

Why the Fook aren't NZF or the Oceania Confederation paying for this?

How do other teams across the region travel when NZL team (league champion) has such problems? Really sad.

Because they want to invest the 40% of ACFC prize money they receive every year wisely.

please note the following before you read my comment:

- i do not know if or what TW players and officials are paid

- i do not have an opinion on this myself, i am just raising a point

but...

does anyone think this is icky ground? i.e. supporters paying when players get paid

def a strange one. Also they are going regardless of what coin gets thrown in the cap.

It has also just been clarified by TW that OFC do actually pay towards their travel

So is the money that they're begging for simply to pay the players wages for the overseas trip?

just as an example: all players who went to play for TW on Sunday lost a days wages as no flights out after the game.

Go to a travel agent and price the trip - you will find any OFC contribution does not come close to covering the cost.

But lets not let facts get in the way of a YF forum. :-)

It's Peter Chote who's saying the OFC covers the airfares, not the YF forum.

Good on Peter, Air fares is part of the cost.  Accomodation - Food, most of which I beleive they purchase and taken from NZ to cut illness.

For those who think otherwise I have no involvement with TW other than the BBQ and the extra sometimes supplied off the BBQ .

But if your not interested in helping try not to sway people who may wish to help out a local team!  ?

I'm not meaning to give the impression I'm trolling. And I know full well the horrible realities of trying to fundraise for the survival of sports clubs, it's bloody tough going.

At the same time however, it appears to me there could be better transparency with this. As initially it would appear Joe Public was misled (unintentionally it would seem) to believe the full travel costs needed to be raised.

Also, contrary to what you say, you don't appear to be providing any actual facts.

But I may well be in the minority in terms of caring,  so perhaps I should just jog on.

Well they have been paid the previous 14 Sundays more than likely at rate above their day jobs so....

Think last year Thier were 13 ineligible players by the rules allowed to play.

The fee to contest this was over $500 per player, hence no protests
